Thanks, Lou. Fingers crossed here in NH that we'll get that cold front from the West & push Earl away from our coastline & nearby towns.

Food related....Well, maybe someone can offer good suggestions for what to stock up on for times when there is no electricity and the weather is too stormy for grilling.

There is a thread on conversations about east coast people watching out for the storm.
But I suppose it doesn't hurt to have two wishes for safety.

Chatham isn't in Maine it is on the elbow of the Cape in Mass.

Biggest problem right now seems to be the undertow - it is fierce at the Jersey shore today.

The undertow has to be coming from the remnants of Danielle. With Earl brushing much closer to the coast, wave action and undertow will increase substantially.

We just went over to the beach an hour ago. Waves are big and the sea is rough, but nothing like what it will be tomorrow when Earl passes 350 mi. east of Central FL. I don't think we'll get anything from it except high waves and wind.

Today is absolutely lovely! It's 84 degrees and 52% humidity. Because the hurricanes draws moisture into its self, weather in the area dries out and becomes beautiful. Probably will be this way for the next 3 days. Very unusual for September in FL. Just have to sit back and enjoy!

Here is why this thread is food/cooking related:

Sometime ago, I planned a big party for many people. It was kind of a re-union party. Many people had to make special trips, take time-off from work, make hotel reservations etc.
Lots of preparation, planning, and pre-cooking with two refrigerators packed with food.

The day before the party, a huge storm passed by and knocked out power to the entire town.
Having had no electric power was no problem. I just switched the house over to emergency power.

Here was the totally unexpected cooking problem:

The time came for the guests to arrive. First, because the power was out for the entire area, there were no traffic lights so traffic was a huge problem for everyone. Then because there were many trees fell all over and power lines down, many local streets were closed to traffic. Many guests got lost. I had to tell then to stay put and drove around to find them to direct them to the house.

There was no time left for me to do the cooking planned for the recipes. I had to instantly re-plan/Improvise the entire meal based on the stuff and time that I had.

The party was a very memorable event for all attended.

Dcarch your post reminded me of living through hurricane Agnes in the 70's. My cousin got married right in the midst of it, lots of guest couldn't make it because the Lincoln tunnel was closed. We had a heck of a time getting there due to all the roads that were closed/flooded. Luckily my neighborhood is high and usually mostly dry and my garden needs the rain in the worst way. But I know if the rain gets bad the Delaware will give us a run for our money.

Lou, this isn't the first and won't be the last thread that wasn't "quite" food related. It's all good !

Poor Nova Scotia looks like it's going to take a direct hit.

I remember Agnes. Living in SE PA and LUCKILY way out of the hurricane path. BUT a lot of flooding. Was living in an apartment when my Dad called. He had HALF heard something on news about the need to boil water before using. Wasn't sure if it really effected our area but... better safe! So I put 3 biggest pots and full tea kettle on stove. Then promptly LOCKED MYSELF OUT of apartment!! Luckily another neighbor was home and let me in to call super... who was less than enthusiastic about WHEN he would get there. I told him about what was going on on stove and that when the tea kettle stopped whistling... it was dry and the FD would be the next call. Needless to say, he was there in about 5 minutes.

Just got back home from work a little while ago so I haven't watched the latest update on Earl. I live about a mile from the beach in Maine, so not toooo worried. Storms in general don't bother me. We have canned goods, lanterns, candles, water, all the necessities. We are prepared for what comes. But thanks for the concerned warning, it never hurts to give a heads up. NancyLouise

The day my son and his bride were married at her parents home on the cliffs overlooking the Mighty Mississippi, a huge storm with high winds blew through three hours before the wedding, wreaking havoc but leaving the tents standing for some reason. The caterer came to me, the mother of the bride and the wedding planner and told us, "All my stemware is broken, many of the place settings, all the vases of flowers and tablecloths. We cannot have this wedding!" The wedding planner crossed his arms over his chest and said, "You are the caterer and we will have a wedding. The sun is shining now. If you need an extra hour to clean up the mess and get new china, glassware and flowers here, you may have it. But the wedding and reception will go on."

It did, and it was beautiful! I hope life on the east coast will go on as planned, delayed only by an hour or so.

Bought cases of water,batteries,ice and crossing finger here on Long Island!!!! Learned the hard with with Gloria!!
