Thanks everyone for your kind words. It has been a long, long day. I think I am kind of numb right now. We took her to the vets at 11 and it was very hard but I know it was the right decision. After we picked up Chance from school I took her to print out a bunch of pix (she had been taking tons of pictures the last week of Cleo) and an icecream. She keeps asking "is she really gone" Even after we picked Cleo's body up from the vets, we visited with her for a bit and she petted her- she still is having trouble accepting it tho. Perhaps stages of grief?

I already miss her so much, the house feels so empty.

You did the right thing. Cleo had a wonderful life with a wonderful loving family. And you loved her enough to not let her continue to suffer.

Janet I'm so very sorry and know so well that empty sad feeling when you've had to give up a much loved pet.

We once had Goldie, a little rescue dog from the city pound who for years followed me everywhere around the garden as I worked. She was such a lovely little companion and when in her old age we finally had to say goodbye I thought I would never again want to walk around the garden without her beside me.

But the sadness does go away with time. You will feel better knowing you did the right thing and she had a good life with you.

For anyone who might be facing this in the future, we had a company that would take a paw print of your furbaby and put it in a two sided frame so that you could add a picture as well and a nameplate under the picture. It's like a round ball of plaster paris with the paw print in the middle. It was done by the cremation place that took care of our Chelsey. (We have her ashes in a little cedar box). It sits here in my computer room so she's always here with me.

I hope this is not perceived as my being too inconsiderate to you and your family Chancesmom. You have my heartfelt sympathies.

I am so sorry for your loss. I just took an abandoned golden to the vet Monday. She is in sad shape. I am bringing her home today, but don't know what her future holds healthwise. Cleo couldn't have been in a better place with all your love and care. Dogs who find people to love them are truly blessed.

Maybe it would be a nice family activity if you planted a nice tree in Cleo's honor. Chance could be a big part of that.
