I'm about 150 miles away, and we felt it strongly here-- enough that it felt like the building was going to come down, and we all ran outside. I hear sirens and heard there's a crack somewhere, but I haven't seen any of the damage myself. I can only imagine what it felt like in DC and Virginia.

DH has just came in & told me we have several cracks in the driveway & a couple of humps in the back yard.

Got to say, I'm amazed. There was a small earthquake when we lived in NH centered around the Canadian border but that's it since I left CA. I sure didn't expect this especially as H. Irene is chugging along.

Heard on CNN that the National Cathedral is damaged. :(

Whoa! That was scary! I'm in Dumfries, VA, which is an hour north of the epicenter and about 25 miles south of Washington D.C.

I work on 3rd and top floor of an office building and I had just gotten back from lunch. I was typing away in my cubicle and I felt this rumbling...at first I thought that maybe it was a sonic boom or some sort of explosives training at the base at Quantico (they do that at times), but then it kept going and getting stronger.

I looked to the man who works across the isle from me and we looked at each other like, "WTF is THIS???!! Holy crap this is an EARTHQUAKE!" Things were falling off the wall, potted plants were crashing down, the building was moving, and the windows were cracking.

I never ran down flights of stairs in heels as fast as I did today! Our whole building evacuated and our company closed for the rest of the day.

At home, I live 2 miles away from work, pictures had crashed off the walls, plates and platters had fallen. The kitties were freaked out. But nothing was lost that was valuable and everyone is o.k....shaken (pun intended), but o.k.

I've never been through an earthquake before and it is not something I want to experience again.

Felt like my house was doing the wave. No damage here. The newscasters sure are having a field day.

Here in California, we'd call what you all experienced a "foreshock." ;-o

Yikes! Next thing you know, snow in SoCal! WTF?

I found this evening that four bricks crashed through a corner of my ceiling, taking out a piece of sheetrock. I don't know yet how bad the damage is (but the orange and puke-green particle board cabinets are intact, mercifully. . . ) I quite agree that I never need to experience another one of these. Made me feel like an ant.

I'm a southern Californian, and we know all too well what this is like.

Sounds like all who reported in are safe, at least.

I live in Allentown six blocks from where that neighborhood blew up last spring due to an underground gas main exploding, so unfortunately my first thought, and that of my neighbors, was not earthquake. Actually I thought BF was upstairs knocking out a wall or something. "Typical" he said, "Blame the man."

Jessica, I'm sure glad your cabinets escaped intact. (grin)

L, it's ALWAYS the man's fault, isn't it? Although I've had some men tell me that I'm the closest thng to a natural disaster they've ever experienced, LOL.

We even felt it here in West Michigan. Not much, a few tremors, but I recognized the sensation from the one in Quebec last year and the one in Illinois in February last year. I'm told that if you're in a tall building it's more noticeable and since the tallest building in the county is two stories, well, not much here, kind of like the feeling you get standing by the train tracks when the freight cars come through.

I saw on the news that it damaged the Washington Monument, it'll be closed for an untold amount of time for repairs.

I'm glad everyone is safe but I'm sure wondering what is up with earthquakes in this part of the country!

I was working in a store just over the De state line and we felt nothing...then we got tx mess from our coworkers back home in NJ asking if we were ok! The NJ store had to be evacuated!
Lots.of product fell off the shelves ect...had to get the ok from walmart to reopen.
But as.i said I was 25 miles south and nada!
Weird huh?
