September Trip to the Atlantic Coast

We have our route pretty much worked out but nothing is ever cast in concrete with us. I heeded your input and tried to incorporate destinations that you posted about. Think though I haven't got the NH and Vermont stuff nailed well.

Here is our planned route......take a boo and let me know if there are some alterations I should make...especially that Vermont/ NH leg. Although the map shows some major hwys we intend to follow the smaller ones.

Also would still appreciate any details of places to stop along the way, both foodie and historical/geographical points of interest.

Weird...works for me but you have to click on "my trips" which is to the right just under "destination".

Then select as I indicated.....

Maybe there is a membership thingy.....bummer.

It seems that many (if not most) people who post here plant bands immediately in their permanent garden locations. For reasons I've never been able to understand, that approach hasn't worked for me. It's important to assess each band upon delivery. Some arrive with very puny root systems; others -- even others in the same shipment -- may have roots that almost fill the band pot. Most are somewhere between those 2 extremes. I grow most bands in their shipping pots for an additional 6 to 8 wks after I receive them, especially those that need further root development. Then I pot them into gallon containers. In late fall, I sink the containers to their rims -- sometimes in a protected location, but often not. I usually transfer the plants to their garden locations sometime during their second season here. I order bands only when the variety isn't available in a larger size, and I've learned to order them only when I can get delivery in the spring or very early summer. Also, I'm fiendish about disbudding my bands until they are planted. I know my system sounds fussy & runs counter to that of most gardeners, but it's simply what works best for me.

Linda, there are other ways to lose your livelihood other than being a commercial fisherman should a storm take out several thousand recreational boats here in my town. Many ways. Just a few from the top of my head...marine mechanics, shipwrights, fiberglass specialists, electronics sales/installation/service, rigging specialists, canvas specialties (several types), upholstery specialists, stainless steel fabricators, crane owners & operators, marina owners, dockmasters, deck hands, fuel, pump-out service companies, painters, those who do the shrink-wrapping for winter storage, Tow Boat US franchise owners & their employees, places like West Marine & the marine salvage yard suffer from greatly reduced sales when the boats are not being used, restaurants & their employees (if boaters are not using their boats they aren't in town needing food), hotels, caterers (we have many very large yachts here all summer. They come up from the Caribbean to, hopefully, avoid hurricanes & utilize local caterers every week.), & retail in general. Boaters' purchases are the mainstay of our downtown area. Recreational boating is big business in the Great Lakes area also as it is all along the country's coasts (west, Gulf, & east). People earn their livelihoods in other ways besides farming. And those other livelihoods also ripple through the entire economy. Despite their farms the mid-west is suffering economically right now. So are Connecticut & Rhode Island. IMO, every job we have in America is important...not just farmers. My town lives or dies by the health of our local marine industries that includes oyster bed farmers, scallop divers, commercial fisherman (Stonington, our government jurisdiction, has the last commercial fishing fleet in CT.), sport fishing charter boats, & yes...recreational boaters and all those who support the marine industry that I noted above. The world's largest marine museum is located in Mystic for a reason. As I've said before, Mystic's life blood is the sea.

I sure hope this will inspire you to do what you can to get back into an active lifestyle. Your words are " play" and that is exactly as it should be. No reason it has to be competitive or terribly difficult or involove 1000's of miles or expense...you hit it perfectly...fun. Maybe you have a friend that can join you...or a spouse or SO or.....child ??? Let me know....wish you were close by. c

How nice to see this evolve as a thread. It is very interesting to keep an eye on the data for your specific garden, and the bigger picture. Peter is right that over watering can be a huge issue. I did that, and lost plants. My garden was almost without topsoil, and the holes I made to plant things became "clay buckets" for the rain. Things are much better now. At my closest weather station (KIAD) while the data does show moderate drought ('D0' linked above), the rain deficit data isn't too crazy for the most part (NWS LINK for IAD precipitation PDF) when looked at annually. However at the month level it is quite varied. I'm sure at the week level it is likely even more varied. What I'm thinking is maybe younger plants mostly exist at the week or month level, and in the absence of rain gently adding a little water (e.g. 5 centiliters, or 1/4 cup) every 3 days will might them going until they are more mature, or the rain comes back. These days having recreated the topsoil, I'm mostly thinking about coping with the variabilities, ensuring great root systems to cope with and store a larger precipitation event when it comes.

If there is an area of the rip you are familiar with you can click on the "zoom" bar in the upper right quadrant and then move the map with your mouse. This will enlarge the area so you can see the details better.

Any and all suggestions for change/additions welcome.

Sharon, when you are going from York Beach, ME to Ogunquit are you cutting in to Rt 1 so you can get to Flo's? If you are than stick to the route you have mapped, otherwise take Shore Rd to Ogunquit and Make Flo's a side trip while you are in the area. Shore Rd is a BEAUTIFUL drive.

Actually, it might make more sense to backtrack to Shore Rd after your jaunt to Flo's and continue up that way. It isn;t far out of your way at all!

And if you are getting thirsty or hungry when you hit Kennebumkport, then stop by Federal Jacks - super food.

Thanks Alexa, we are taking route 1 but I did see that there was road closer to the ocean which I assume is Shore Rd? We will go into Flo's and then back out to Shore Rd. Thanks for the tip.

I don't knw what the heck they have so risque at Federal Jack's, but their site got blocked by the "sonic wall" so it's probably fun!

Have a great trip, Sharon. I loved Maine but was much further north and Route 1 was fin. Lots of antiques and roadside lobster shacks is what I remember!

ROFL Annie! Must be the burly sea captain on the sign, they don't want to get your blood all stirred up LOLOLOL! But truthfully, I have no idea why it is blocked, it is just a pub and brewery.

Are you only going as far as Wellfleet on Cape Cod? I really recommend that you take the time to continue to Provincetown. It's one of my favorite drives. You feel like you are driving off the end of the continent, which in fact, you nearly are. The scenery is wonderful although the town is a bit touristy.

My sentiments exactly Dedtired!! It really would be a shame not to drive into Provincetown. Lots of little shops and art galleries, the port and whale watching ships are worth the visit. There's also an old fashioned drive-in movie in Wellfleet right on Route 6!!

No advice here but it looks and sounds like a great road trip Sharon. Check in when you can. Wonder if himself will have to get a new ride after this one, you know, all of those miles on the Bird after last years trip. Sounds good to me. : ) Y'all are having to much fun with this retirement thing!!

Pam and Saraandemmasmom, we are driving into Provincetown. Someone on a previous thread had recommended lobster rolls there as well as the whale watching but I couldn't figure out how to alter the map! We intend to spend a few days in the area.

Sharon, another suggestion here. What about spending a night on Peaks Island off the coast of Maine near Portland? I have day tripped out there and it is a wonderful spot.

I know you don't know me but I feel like I know most of you,I am a lurker.I live on the Cape and if you need help with any questions let me know.Do travel down 6A instead of the highway it is full of history with older homes and shops.The cape has a fantastic rail trail for biking and a nice stop is Nickerson State Park.P-Town(as we locals call it)has some neat shops and very unusual characters.And of course there is Christmas Tree shop in Hyannis next to Trader Joe's wher you just might see me working.In NH Polly's Pancke Parlor is a must stop for me in the fall.Right down the road is Harmon's cheese store= yumm.The Brick Sore in Bath is an old-fashion general store that has a smoker for meats and cheeses.In the White Mts there is The Flume and many trailheads with waterfalls and take a drive on the "Kanc" for some great photos.The breweries are a fun stop in maine with free tours and samples.Portland has tons of fantastic restaurants and bakeries and of course the farmers market if you are there on that day.Bath Iron Works is impressive.Freeport has LLBean,Wicked Whoopies,Simply Divine Brownies and Gritty McDuffs( where a visitor is made to feel like a local).If time allows visit Fort knox and the Penobscot Obsevatory in Prospect, you won't be sorry.In Rockport Farmers Fare is THE place for lunch. When in VT I never miss the Cabot Annex and Cold Hollow Cider right down the Street from Ben & Jerry's.Well I have said far too much lol enjoy your trip yell if you need me.

OMG Ollie! Thanks so much for all the info. I'll do my homework and make sure to include your suggestions.

My husband will be particularly happy with your recommendations on Fort Knox and the Penobscot Obsevatory in Prospect, he just loves that type of thing!
