Cremation Urns for Pets

When Stetson died two years ago we had him cremated. It was our intention to bury his ashes after we moved. Something we still haven't done. We still have his ashes in the box in which they came back to us.

This week we met a local artisan who makes fine furniture and other objects including cremation urns for pets. He does beautiful work. I'm thinking now that rather than bury Stetson's ashes we might purchase an urn from Chickadee Woodworks.

I know many of us have lost a beloved pet and I thought I would share this website with you.

Ann T, that's a lovely thought.

The WonderWeiner got buried out under his favorite tree. Unfortunately, now I'm going to sell this house. When I move I'll take the flowers from his trave and that iron dachshund you gave me, I use it to make his grave.

My father died by his own in hand in our shed, I was twenty one the eldest of six and my brothers were twelve, fourteen and sixteen. My mother still lives on the farm - the shed is still there but it doesn't have any terrible memories for any us. We all knew what happened and were involved in the burial etc. In the beginning when I came home I would go over to the shed but after a while that stopped. I think talking to your children in general conversation without it becoming a big deal will help - at least they know the facts rather than letting their imaginations run riot. They may like to go to the woods to feel close to their mum. Mav63, my little girl is six and she didn't understand what I meant by Daddy being dead until she saw him even then she asked my why he wasn't moving - none of her cousins of the same age saw him but they have accepted his death although how much they understand of dead I don't know. One six year old wanted to go to the grave to say a prayer, and the four year old boy is bringing one of his tractors to the grave for Hugh. Is there some place they can go to visit where the ashes were scattered? Do you really need to explain the difference betweeen buried/cremated to them unless they ask. I would let them know he was cremated and unless they ask I wouldn't go explaining - they will learn gradually as they get older the difference themselves. Young kids I think are accepting and unless we make a big deal out it they generally won't. Hope my ramblings make some sense.

Hi weed. I hope you are doing well. It isn't easy, is it? Lorie, I'm sorry about PeeWee. If you search online there are some places that make beautiful pet memorial stones in granite and river rock. I had my girl cremated too- just got her cremains back last Thursday. I cannot bring myself to open the box, it has a little brass lock on it. Maybe someday I will, but not now. For now the cedar box she came back in is on the table with a picture of her beside it. I searched around online for granite memorial stones and there are some nice ones out there. Even though she was cremated, I thought it might be nice to have a memorial stone in the garden like an anchor point for her memory. I still haven't decided whether or not to do it. I miss her so much :( Q

I hadn't noticed the date ... and thought, "Seems to me that I've heard that story before" ... I had the reply figured/remembered before it came. But still enjoyed it. When I think of how many times some people say that it's not a good idea to bring old stories back to life ... think of how many smiles (and slopped on computer screen) would have been missed today if this one hadn't been. For a long time I've planned on cremation. I agree with Rodney Dangerfield's line in Caddyshack: "Golf courses and cemetaries. The two biggest wastes of prime real estate." However I would consider being buried in the middle of the fairway of a big golf course. Put up a marker saying "forget the sand trap, here lies the death trap." Then I can be around to laugh in death at the idiots who think hitting a ball and chasing it is "fun". Maybe this should go in the "why" threads, but I have trouble understanding why people hang on to ashes of dead people and animals. Never made much sense to me. And good gawd, putting one of those silver "urinals" (as Archie Bunker called them) on the mantle... that's sick. I keep thinking about the old movie jokes about people who knock over the ashes and/or vacuum them up and wind up sitting around smoking away to try to replace the ashes...

They are nice.

I have to admit when my pets went to their final reward I either left their body with the vet or took it to the SPCA for mass cremation. I figured once they are gone, nobody's there.

Of course I understand that having them buried nearby or keeping their ashes is a wonderful way to remember a beloved pet and very helpful to the owner. I do believe there are some birds and turtles buried in my yard, pushing up daisies. The fish got a burial at sea.

Beautiful work Ann. We've been lucky because our dogs' ashes have all been returned in nice-quality wood containers. We've moved too frequently to bury dogs without having to leave them behind, so cremation has worked for us.

Oh Annie, I'm so glad I sent you that iron dashshund. Although I never thought at the time that it would end up being a headstone. Seems like it was meant to be.

Goldgirl, that is really nice that your dogs ashes have been returned to you in nice wood containers. Stetson's ashes came back in a little cardboard box that looks like a Chinese takeout container.

What I love about the Chickadee Woodwork's boxes is that they are designed by a local artist, specifically to be used as an Urn.

Some friends of ours bought a statue of a cat and hollowed out
the inside and put the ashes of their beloved cat inside.
Nick, now sits in the window sill at their house. they did the same for their dog Maggie, a German Shepperd.

We just buried our Sadie under a tree. I had a stone made that had a picture of a Cocker engraved along with the date of her birth and death. If we ever move, I will just move the stone since it truly is just a memorial and reminds us to remember her.
Ann, the website is wonderful. What a lovely idea.

Oh Ann, What a wonderful way for you to have Stetson with you forever. I know how much you miss him.

When Captain died we had just returned from a vacation. As I was leaving out the door, to get him from the vetÂs office that boarded him, I received the call. He just didn't wake up that morning. What a wonderful 17 1/2 years we had with him.

It truly is a wonderful idea to have a beautiful box to keep their ashes in.

Since this is a cooking forum with so many pet lovers, I'll tell my story from many years ago.

When DH was still a student we were living in a rental in Galveston (not near any family), when we lost our beloved cat. For some reason, cremation didn't occur to me and I didn't want to bury her there. So we sealed her up in plastic, then boxed her up nicely, and put her in our freezer until we were able to make the trip back to his Mom's house in Mississippi where we buried her with our other pets. She stayed in our freezer for about 3 months.

We now cremate all of our pets.

Thank you for sharing Ann. I wish I would've thought of that with Keegan; it all happened so quickly. I buried him at the home our family has had for generations, but then mom moved?! I have his marker, but it's not the same. If I had it to do over, that's what I would do. I appreciate the link.
