Due to stomach acidity, dogs and cats are not normally susceptible to Salmonella or many of the other food poisoning agents that effect us, so the pet food companies don't have to try to control them. Now with the new focus on pet food safety, I expect we'll see stricter rules. It's always been a bad idea to handle dog food without washing your hands after, because of the salmonella danger. From a dog who carries the bacteria (about 36% of all dogs & 17% of domestic cats) you can be exposed by saliva or feces. Your DH needs to be very careful. 30+ years ago when I was in college we did testing on this same subject so I've been aware of it for a long time. I'm cautious with pet food and, of course, with their droppings. But I foolishly still kiss my dogs!

I'm feeding my cat Purina and so far none of their catfood is on the list as far as I know. But they just added Purina's Alpo (dogfood) and they already had another kind of their dogfood on there. I also heard that the first kind of dry food has appeared on the list...can't remember what, but it wasn't a Purina product. I'm getting paranoid about this and am considering switching to the kitty foods at the health food stores or something. My congressman is going to get a letter about this mess! And I think everyone who loves their pets should do that also. I love my kitties and every time I buy catfood I think...could this kill them? Could it make them sick? It should never have happened! Sooo entirely preventable! If I had known that the petfood companies allowed stuff from China in their products, I'd have realized how dangerous that would be and I'm not a genius. Now, why didn't THEY know? Or DID THEY KNOW?

Thanks - this is good information for dog owners. When I graduated from college I worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. One summer I did testing in a lab for aflatoxin levels in corn. Some of it was gross - with most of the kernel covered in a gray-black mold. I always wondered where that corn was going - I think much of it went to animal feed - perhaps for cows.

It does make you wonder what to do these days. With the e-coli in hamburger I now buy something ground at the store or meat market and freeze it for a week or so. Let someone else get sick first! And I usually buy a lot of pet food so it sits for a while and I always buy a premium to super-premium food in which I have a lot of confidence. That doesn't mean that problems can't happen though. And in fairness, Nutro is a pretty good, middle-of-the-road food maker. I tried it a couple times but I get better food for the same or less so I don't use it anymore. Again, in fairness, this was a mistake. It's sad though that they don't give some info on what the possible affects of too much vitamins can be. Often, with water-soluble vitamins, it'll just leave unused. Not sure how it works in this case though. Thanks for the heads up. I'll pass it along to people who might be affected.
