Myrtle Beach info please

Finally, after a good number of years, I get to take a real vacation. So Dad and I are heading to North Myrtle Beach, SC for a week on the beach. We found a beautiful condo and have started to pack up. Fur and fin kids are set with sitters and plants will be watered. Neighbors can help themselveds to toms and cukes.

Anyone have any recommendations for food, both shopping and eating out? Any must sees? I want to head for Pawleys Island for sure, and Dad wants to go to Wilmington to see the battleship. One the way back we are going to stop in Asheville to tour the Biltmore Estate for day too.

Peppi, let me get some current info from my girlfriend Camille. She lives in Charleston now, but spent about 5 years in MB and still drives up to visit friends there often. I visited her a few times, but it has been a while.

Candace, These are the Dwarf Wax Myrtles. Not what one thinks of as a Dwarf. I've been working in that area so it's still ongoing. The one on the left is limbed up nicely, but then I lost the privacy that I wanted. I had planned to plant some Abelia Grandiflora until the butterflies won out. So, Rue made it instead. At least, it's the rent house next door while the other blocks the view from the street. So, I may have to live with that for a while. Of course, it could revert back to a shrubby bush if it is left unpruned. It just looks so much better cleaned up. The one on the right might just remain like it is as it does provide more privacy. The last photo shows that it was planted too close to the fence and has grown through it to some degree as well as growing over it. I don't think they mind. But, it's worthwhile to keep it off the fence. I haven't gotten around to any pruning toward that. But, I don't want it to get any heavier wood, due to time, growing there. This turned out to be a good resource with all the photos that everyone has posted. ExMontrose person here. I saw that you lived in Houston. At least, you get more rain than we do up here. I, too, have read the thing about planting several cuttings together, but I don't buy into that thought because that just results in multiple plants that APPEAR to be one plant. I currently have 4 adult plants, and all of them have multiple trunks. Now, these adults' multiple trunks all start ABOVE the ground. In other words, you see one trunk coming out of the ground, and all the other trunks split off that trunk, which is what I like seeing. I want the same thing on these new babies. As far as your cutting goes, that's kind of what I wonder if I need to do. I mean, shoots typically sprout when you cut somewhere above the base, which is what basically happened to yours when that branch broke off. This is why I wonder if I should top mine. But, I am scared to do that because I don't want to cut the main stem for fear of it then causing the plant to split into multiple trunks at that point, which might be too high up. I'd really prefer if the splits occur down low, just above the ground, you know what I mean?

Nate, I grew in Wilmington NC, located near the mouth of the Cape Fear, about 60 mi from Myrtle Beach. Wilmington is steeped in Civil War history. The downtown area has some fabulous old colonial mansions. Greenfield Gardens is a 150 acre lake with old cypress trees hanging heavy with spanish moss. It's particularly beautiful in April when the azaleas are blooming. Wilmington is known as the 'city of azaleas' and they are breathtaking when they all bloom in early April. Greenfield gardens has a 5 mile hiking/biking path that's very nice. Airlie Gardens, near Wrightsville Beach, is known for it's ancient oaks and natural beauty. Located on the sound, it has lots of waterbirds. Old Brunswick Town, near Southport, is a wonderful old colonial port town. The region has lots of excavated ruins dating back to the early 1700's. Also the Fort Fisher area is very nice. There should be lots of hiking trails in the region. I don't think you'd encounter too many tourists this time of year. In fact, many of those little towns roll up the sidewalks early. I love the local food. Great seafood, hushpuppies, brunswick stew and pork barbecue...the best! We used to go to Myrtle Beach when I was a kid but it wasn't anything like it is now...so I can't tell you anything about that area anymore. You could however go over to the Carolina gardening forum. There are people there that could give you some info. Have fun!

Mike, A zone 8a in the Pacific NW (Seattle for example) will be much different than South Carolina. Many other factors besides the cold contribute to what you can successfully grow. Since Myrtle Beach is a popular tourist destination, you may have some luck doing a search on yahoo or google for palms that are planted around there. Check out some of the hotel websites and beaches etc to see what they are growing.

The Biltmore Estate is huge, and there's a lot to do and see. I hope you plan to spend a night or two in Asheville. It's also fun to walk around the town of Asheville. It's small, walkable and funky.

If they want some real good bar food....like French dips, Philly Cheese steak, burgers, etc......gotta go to Oscars!!! it is the best. Great sports bar if they are into that too.
For a very nice dinner and always wonderful place.....Thoroughbreds is the place to go....just wonderful.....great steaks or anything on the menu is fantastic....great wine list....can't go wrong. Still one of my favs.....went there in January!!
Bovines in Murrells Inlet is great too......we used to go there a lot when I lived there.
The Mayor's House in Pawleys...since they will be down there anyway.....is always great.
For seafood also try Preston's in North MB......always a good choice.
A great place to hang out have a cocktail and shoot an oyster or two....Bimini's Oyster Bar and seafood.
for breakfast....Plantation Pancake house is the deal.....I think there are two of them.....the Spanish omelet with the plantation potatoes is to die for.

If they are going to order pizza to be delivered......California pizza is great and you can go to any of their 3 locations too.

I can't help you with Myrtle Beach because I have never been there.
You will love Asheville and the Biltmore Estate, it is totally awesome! It is amazing how they have restored it. We stayed at the Grove Park Inn and if you are staying the night in Asheville I would highly recommend it, it is also amazing at how it was restored.
I am not a history buff, but there is alot of history there and very interesting!
We were in Asheville in 2000 for the USA Peanut Congress and really enjoyed it.

Linda, that is perfect, just what I was looking for.

I was at the Biltmore about 3 years ago with some of the CF gang- the Pigeon forge Pajama party. We saw a good bit of the house but now I want to see more.

Sherry, I will even give you a seat, no need to hide in the suitcase.

Plan on going to the Market Common area for shopping and if you like bike riding, Murrells inlet is charming.
We usually eat at dives but the best restaurants are in Murrells inlet. There is a good Chinese buffet on 17 that is unspectacular except they have a great cook to order hibachi. Follow the billboards. It's a whole lot better than P.F. Changs.

Fun things to do and not to miss:

Ripleys Aquarium. Worth the money.
Broadway at the Beach

Carolina Opry- I love this!! The main show and Good Vibrations are wonderful!!

Brookgreen Gardens- really beautiful. The largest collection of outdoor sculptures and they are stunning.
Worth the drive

The yacht club in North Myrtle has a mile long walkway around the piers and it's fun to look at all the boats.

If you want to cook at the condo, the grocery in Cherry Grove is my favorite. Their seafood is great.

You will need a full day at Biltmore. Two if you can swing it.
