Prayers for our pup.

Our dog Gretchen has been feeling under the weather the past few days...just not herself. I chalked it up to the oppresive heat we've been having.

Amy came home from work an hour ago and found her unresponsive so she called a neighbor kid to help lift her into her truck and they took her to the local pet ER (our vet is in Philly)

They are running test.

I am so proud of her that she had the presence of mind to see that Gretchen needed help ASAP and not wait till I got home.

I also want to give a shout out to FootBall Ed....the neighbor kid who is just about as strong as an ox and helped Amy lift her!!

I'll post more when I know more.

Gretch is our only pet now...Wendy passed 2 years ago next week, followed by Spice girl and Baby Blu....Timmie lived until we moved but heck she was 20 and was a fat happy cat all her life...if we lose Gretch it may be too much to bear right now.

Oh Susie, my heart hurts for you. My dog's recent passing is still fresh. Amy was very smart not to wait, and at least you know something is being done. I'll keep good thoughts and say a prayer.

How about a short crating, then another period of time together before bed? Our now 8 month old Toller has had an evening eruption of manic activity/toy playing/running around since almost day one, starting around 8-8:30PM. We introduced the "Time Out" concept using the football handsignal, and then crating him for 20 minutes to an hour, until he's settled down and usually napping quietly. At first he moped and wailed and harumphed and sighed (and also sometimes shrieked and barked non-stop), but he eventually figured out that it just had to be a quiet time, and once he was quiet and calm, we would let him back out. It gave us a chance to chill out after supper, gave the old dog a chance to cuddle uninterrupted in my husband's lap (as in, "before the new pup came along"), and allowed the new dog to learn to self-regulate. He seemed to quickly accept that we were all still together in the same room and he wasn't that far away, he wasn't being punished or isolated, and it wouldn't last that long. We're not doing it every night anymore, sometimes not for a week or more, but when we need to, just the words "Time out!" and the handsignal will have him trotting off to curl up in the crate. He frequently sleeps in the open crate during the day (as does the other dog), so neither of them perceive it as a punishment chamber :o) It may also help to round up the toys that your pup plays with most rambunctiously (or the ones that make the most noise!) and put them away (and out of sight) before the evening wild time begins. Maybe have one relatively "quiet" toy (like a non-squeaky stuffed animal) that only comes out in the evening, so it's special and interesting for him. Good luck! Susan

I hope she continues to improve. As a vet, I am very careful to give every patient a thorough risk assessment and vaccinate only for those diseases that show high risk. Even so, I still have had a few vaccine reactions. The risk of reaction needs to be less than the risk of actually contracting the disease. I never vaccinate indoor only cats for FeLV, and after a year of age I don't even vaccinate the outdoor kitties for it either. OTOH, any dog who gets groomed or boarded on a regular basis keeps the bordetella vaccine updated every 6 months. Which rabies vaccine was used in Bindi? The recombinant rabies vaccine is considered safer than the killed vaccine because of the addition of adjuvents in the killed vaccine. I am just curious because currently the hospital where I work has only the killed rabies vaccine, and I am pushing to get the recombinant one for cats.

Thank you for the kind words and prayers for our contractor. He came to our house last night to tell us what happened, how his doctor feels he's doing, and his plans to have our remodel completed. It was great to see him, but so dreadful hearing the harrowing details. Basically, he was making our cabinets and the the piece of wood kicked back and in an instant he lost portions of 3 fingers of his right (dominant) hand. Just horrible. He is a meticulous, super careful guy. He said he's healing well, but is really unhappy to see what remains of his hand. His told us "I've been doing this for 30 years and have only cut myself once...well, I can't do anything about it now, I just have to move forward". He has to wait another 10 days before he'll be reevaluated (which is driving him crazy). He's already lined up another cabinet maker to finish creating the cabinet boxes on Monday and has a team set up to stain them. Tom is not the kind of guy to sit still for very long. I pray that with physical therapy and some modifications he'll be able to continue his business. He's one of those guys who is always busy and does such a great job that he's usually booked out a year in advance. My husband and I told him to take as long as he needs to heal-he is more important than our kitchen. We can make do with our "indoor camping" for a long time. The house is tight and warm, we have a fridge, stove and temporary sink, a card table and chairs, and a beautiful sawhorse/closet door island. He brought with him the front to one of the cabinets so we could see how they will look-beautiful! When all is done, I'll post pics. I've lurked here for over a year and have learned so much. Thanks again for your kind thoughts.

Gretchen in is heaven with my mom.

They said she had some sort of infection which was causing her symptoms.
They offered surgery which alone may have killed her so we decided to do the humane thing.

I am just stunned with how fast this all was-my head is spinning.

I had her outside for a few minutes while I tended to some overgrown pots and she seemed ok. That was about 10 am.
Amy found her at 8 pm and she appeared to be having seizures and could not walk or lift her head.

This summer has been terrible!!

Rest in peace Gretchie Pooh!!

Oh Susie. (((Hugs))) I feel for you. There's still a hole in my heart from missing my dog, and hearing your news makes it fresh again. It's a hard thing to do, but you did what you felt best for Gretchen. I'm so sorry for the loss of your sweet pet.
