In the late 60s there was a song called "Abilene" that went, "Abilene, Abilene, Prettiest town I've ever seen..." and my brother Mike, who was about 12 at the time would sing it as "Halloween, Halloween, Prettiest time I've ever seen..." because he thought that's what it was about. It must have come out in October. Mike and I had been to Abilene (Texas) because it is not far from where our grandparents lived, and so he was well aware of the town. The song might have been about Abilene, Kansas, however, which may have been the source of his confusion.

I recently saw some children on the some show trying to sing the national anthem, and they botched those lyrics pretty severely.

Oh that's cute, Lars. There was a song I can't quite remember and I thought they were saying Abilene, but it was actually a woman's name.

I don't know why this one is striking me so funny. I am laughing all over again at the comments.

CL, my children are too old to discipline at this point. They are both much bigger than I am. I wish I had written down some of the funny things they misheard as kids.

Not lyrics, but I was really embarrassed when I realized the expression is "for all intents and purposes", not "for all intensive purposes" which is what I had been saying.

My son had some goodies. He played in the bakard. And when I graduated from college I was the Valid Victorian.

Valid Victorian? You must have been a history major.

As a kid in Sunday school I'd sing "For God so loved the world, he gave his only son, to die in Calvree's tree , from sin to set us free".

I went to a funeral yesterday and on the way home we were discussing trepasses vs debtors and is it forever and ever amen or just forever amen. Not misheard, just differences. I was a trespasser forever and ever amen. My friend also was a trespasser but just forever amen. It's kind of a riot at a funeral (where different religions are attending) when you get half the people saying debt and the other half saying trespass and then half are still saying forever and ever while the other half are already on amen.

First, sorry about the funeral.

I'm a natural "trespassor" but trying to relearn to be a "debtor" and am forever getting confused. It's difficult to unlearn. But, your story reminded me of the young boy attending a funeral. Afterwards, he was asked if he was okay. The boy responded, "Oh yes, they just said The Father, Son, and in the hole he goes". !! lol

I always get the runner up mixed up. I say salutorian instead of salutatorian.

It's funny what kids hear.

My mother thought "Freeze Frame" was "Refrain". But then she also thought "Mull of Kintyre was "Bollocking time". :-)
I had a text one night at choir rehearsal from DH who was killing himself laughing at the person who thought a line in "Take it Easy"- "Looking for a lover who won't blow my cover" was "...who won't blow my brother".....

P.S. Still, the funniest to me is "there's a bathroom on the right." Can't quit laughing.

Hmmm. When I was a kid I always wondered why they were singing about laundry in church. You know, "Bringing in the Sheets". And why were they so happy, because it didn't rain? "We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheets".

Ashley used to like Linda Ronstadt's rendition of "Love is a Nose, so you'd better not pick it". (grin)

There was one song where they sang the word paradise and i thought it was pair of dice.

In high school band, we had our own special titles for the music we played.

To us, "March of the Meistersingers" was "March of the Meat Stringers".

"The Syncopated Clock" was "The Copper Plated Sink".

Evidently a lot of people think these garbled lyrics are funny. CNN did a follow up to their first story, mentioning the funny comments to the first article. I actually did think the lyrics were Lucy in disguise with diamonds. Guess I was wrong. You all should add yours to the comments, esp Lars story about Halloween.
