Antiquers - How to clean this painted trunk?

Throughout my extended family there are a handful of these old army trunks which date back to my great great grandfather's time in the service which began in 1861. To my knowledge this one, which I now have, is in the best condition of the few that haven't been completely refinished one way or another.

It's very filthy and I don't know how to clean it without compromising the lettering which you can see is already very faded. (The lettering on the front has obviously been touched up.) Wiping with damp paper towels doesn't seem to be enough, although I suppose if I worked at it long enough... Any other suggestions?
