I'm thrilled to pieces!! Happiest News!!

My son, Nathan, got engaged last night! I'm just thrilled! I knew it was coming as they had been planning to get engaged but last night was the big event. He popped the question and she, of course, said yes. She's a lovely young lady and I'm delighted to have her in the family.

Now the fun part! Let the planning begin. Wheeeeeee!!!!!!!

May, I'm happy for you. Life is good when you like/love your DIL/SIL. We look forward the plans being rolled out.

I've thought about the implications of not liking my SIL; he's a wonderful husband and father--I think I have a crush on him.

Berndoodle, *** I assume you've dug down 6 or 8 inches in the soil about a foot out from these roses and tested the dampness of the soil? I will dig down and check for dampness. All the roses get the same watering (more this year than last) and lots more rain this summer than last. *** What else do you know about your soils? Compacted? Organic matter content? Organic matter in the soil acts as a warehouse for nutrients and moisture. Organic mulch... The original ground is mostly very compacted gray sandy stuff with limestone rocks and strands and chunks of white clay. I dug down to about 15", removed half of it and all the rocks and 90% of the clay, replaced it with bagged topsoil & composted cow manure, pine fines & composted horse manure. In May I mulched with newspaper (long gone), CHM and pine straw. When I removed Duchesse de Brabant, I was amazed by the thick roots that went pretty much straight down. A couple of them were 2.5 feet longer where they broke, so they're going down into native ground which is yucky. And who knows what THAT pH is! My amended soil was in the range of 6.8 to 7.0, but I haven't checked it recently. All the roses get the same treatment, but some are reacting differently. Last year in his first summer Mons Tillier was well foliated and wonderful. This year he's huge (6+ x 6) but almost no leaves inspite of more water and MiracleGro in August, September & early October. (Thanks for the suggestion, Taoseeker.) His roots have to be deep down is the crummy stuff by now. On the other hand LeVesuve is in a bed that probably didn't get as much good stuff to balance the awful native stuff as MT did, and it's lush and blooming big (but no where near as tall as MT since he was moved this March.) Anna Olivier is located in or very near the road bed (really crappy stuff almost like hardpan) prepared the same way but she's beautiful and lush. Saldut, my azaleas grow better in builder's sand than the native soil, but all the builder's sand is gone. Ann, if it were just water that would be an answer anyway. The last several days I've been watering daily by hand but not heavy with the hose. It's been very dry since summer ended 10 days ago, plus some areas need more mulch. When I check them down at 6" or 8" depth, I'll know if I'm watering enough. Old Blush is surviving but that's about it. She's looks like she should be living in an abandoned cemetery. Even though my pH near the surface isn't real high (high enough that multiflora-blooded roses don't like it), these roses are supposed to like pH around 6.5 or less, right? So I was wondering if they really hate putting their roots down in the deadzone below. I'd not particularly recommend Debutante for Richmond. It's very, very iffy a lot farther south than Richmond as far as producing blooms (even after it's all budded up nicely). It would likely be hardy as a plant, but it's not very bud hardy and you'd likely get few blooms. And the foliage itself is not so full as to make a plant that's wonderful to look at, whether it blooms much or not. (Though they are gorgeous on the few occasions when you do get its blooms.) All the camellias starting with "April" were developed with extra hardiness in mind, though some who have posted have found them less hardy than they expected. If you really want a pink color the most, and want something especially cold hardy, perhaps a few recommended by the Potomac Valley Camellia Society might work: Berenice Boddy, Dr. Tinsley, Winter's Charm, or Winter's Dream. The most beautiful pink japonica camellia I've ever seen is Nuccio's Jewel. I don't know how hardy it is; you'd need to ask around Richmond for that, but I know that it survived the latest frigid winter fine just north of Greensboro, NC, and then I bought it with no bud or any other kind of damage that I could see. Blooms mid to late season. I've no idea how it would do in full sun, though we've planted both of ours in fairly sunny spots, not so much shadier than where a nearby tea rose is growing and blooming happily. If you're willing to consider reds, I'd strongly recommend Professor C. S. Sargent. One of ours is growing very, very happily right next to that happily blooming tea rose, though it's in somewhat less than a full sun situation for many months of the year. It's extremely bud hardy and reliable in every way--a really easy to grow camellia that likes to bud up and bloom a *lot*. Ours started blooming around the first of December last year and kept going until mid April this year--a longer season than is typical, due to the extended length of very low temperatures this winter. It does usually start blooming in the first part of December, though--it's just that the season ran longer than normal this year. The blooms last extremely well, both on the bush and in a vase. Kanjiro, an upright-growing vigorous red hiemalis camellia that blooms prolifically all fall and into the winter is desirable in every way. It's very hardy too (according to what I read--ours is only a couple of months old). Another hiemalis camellia that's wonderful, wonderful: Shishigashira. Not very fast-growing, and a horizontal grower in the extreme, it makes a wonderful short hedge to line a walk or driveway. Extremely hardy, and extremely bud hardy too. Both hiemalis camellias make good cutting flowers. The Shishigashiras are tiny, tiny double flowers that look like little red roses. (But those tiny flowers tend to absolutely cover the plant, almost like an azalea.) The Kanjiros, which also bloom heavily, have much larger single blooms, with pointed petals. Your local grower might be labeling and locating either of these hiemalis camellias in with the sasanquas, as the tendancy is to do that with any camellia that blooms in the fall. Michelle, because this is a new house to you, I would wait before I do anything. Sometimes doing one thing leads to another to another to another and pretty soon you are in over your head. Usually, waiting a year and seeing how the space works is the best advice. Then, research, research, research about what you like, how you would like the space to look, what materials you want, etc. Gather pictures, and start a Houzz profile with kitchens that you like and don't like. Study them. See what you like and don't like about each picture. Look at faucets, lighting, flooring, cabinets, hardware, etc. The more research you do, the better the finished product. THEN, if you decide to paint, you will be better informed about what you want the finished product to look like. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it is what you may need to hear.

Congratulations to all of you! My first thoughts were like RR's - Nathan can't be old enough to be engaged - but of course he can.

I remember his published crossword puzzle and his occasional cooking questions here. It's been fun seeing him grow up.

I was hoping that was the news!

And I smugly state that I have the privilege of actually knowing Nathan and can testify that he is indeed a great guy. May, is the girl someone who went to camp with him and Thing Two? IS SHE THERE NOW?? We just got back from 10 days there last night -- maybe I met her.

I have to send an email to Thing Two in Israel right away with the great news. (By the way, the whole reason she went to Israel this year is because of a boy SHE met at camp.)

I'm so excited! Promise to keep us updated with all the plans. Do you know yet where and when the wedding will be?

No, he didn't meet her at camp. He met her at school in NY.

It looks like the wedding will be HERE! Since they are both living here now, they decided it would be much easier to plan a wedding locally than to try to plan it long distance in NY. Now, how great is THAT! I'm going to get to help some and have told Rebecca & Nathan multiple times that although I will voice my opinion (can't help it!) that they should do what THEY want and not worry about my feelings or opinions. I know what it's like to have a MIL insisting on her way and believe me, I will NOT be that way.

They haven't set a date yet, hopefully they will within the next couple of weeks. Looking at next spring.

And yes! I look forward to sharing updates here with y'all! What fun!!
