Hello from France!

What a beautiful country is all I can say....

We arrived two weeks ago. Internet access has been a challenge....but thats been OK :-)

We spent a wonderful week in Burgundy then a week in Provence....so different, one from the other, each amazing. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Burgundy.

The food is amazing even in the most simple establishment, and the wine....what can I say !

As it happened Meredith and her GF were in France for a two week vacation and met up with us in Burgundy for two days, so that was very special.

Now we are in Bordeaux , right in the heart of the city, and have internet access!!!!!! :-)

I do have pics and will post as soon as I get that part figured out...

Sharon, I knew you were SOMEWHERE, I just couldn't remember where.

I'll also look forward to pictures. Elery says to drink some extra wine for him, you know how he likes his red wine.

What fun to meet up with Meredith, that's some great timing. Travel safely and have fun! Or maybe that should be MORE fun.

I think Lotus berthelotii is more likely as it is widely sold as a container plant and can cope with drought and heat. But it might not be totally hardy through a Languedoc winter. Thanks, Malcolm. I envy you the visit to Andre Eve's nursery and private garden. Wow. Also the Bagatelle judging, complete with champagne. I was very lucky to be able to attend the conference myself, and have some photos on my Picasa album of the Day of the Rose at Chaalis before the conference began, and of Prof Joyaux's gallica collection in Commer. I broke my camera during the conference so it's nice to see your photos, Malcolm - I didn't get very many. It was fun to see a photo of me, Sherri and Judy. I had to laugh at photos of Betty under a drippy umbrella - is it ALWAYS raining when she's visiting gardens? It certainly should whet appetites for the conference in Lyon. Hello again, and thank you all for making me feel so welcome ... I will certainly post more pictures now you've got me started! Sorting through my photos is what has kept me going through the winter without losing my mind!! Jennie, I completely agree that seeing the whole bush is so useful, you also get to see the setting and the companion plants that make the roses even more beautiful. However, I also take tons of closeups, after all the flower is what sells us in the first place and with some roses, the petals have a certain quality, you can almost smell them! Ingrid, I love that term "cross pollination of ideas"! Daun, the deep pink rose at the top is the Austin Gertrude Jekyll. Here she is by herself: The purple and scarlet flowers are actually Sweet William. They all came out of one packet of seeds, the only snag is you never know what colours you're going to get. You can see them better in this different view of the "yellow bed" (the roses here are Claudia Cardinale, a Rosa Generosa by Guillot, and Molineux - top right): and of the "blush bed" (the large bush is Andre' le Notre, a HT with heavily damask-perfumed, gigantic flowers, the smaller bush with the apricot flower facing us is another Guillot Generosa called Veronique B, this one smells of almonds and marzipan!) Florence, I adore Zeffy, the scent, the colour. Some people don't like the bloom shape, but I find it charming. Jeri, it was sunny here too, but far from hot. Last year we had temps in the 80's in the second half of April, today it barely got to 66F! Rosefolly, I like your online name, too! Sherry, the climate in this part of the Gironde can be humid, as we are on the Atlantic coast, but "normally" the summers are hot and very sunny. I KNOW what you mean--"When she's good, she's VERY VERY GOOD, but when she's bad, she's HORRID!!" I've placed mine in a deeper shade situation, not because I believe the spots are caused by the sun, because the one I've moved NEVER did get any direct sun, but because I'm hoping Spring will come later for it in this location, and if the cold temps (some think it doesn't have to be freezing temps--just cold) are the culprit, if I pile on the compost mulch and delay it's emerging--there may be hope. Funny thing, my daughter has FW's in her front bed, facing east and hers almost ALWAYS look wonderful, hardly ever any of those spots! I'm thinking it may ACTUALLY be more about the quality plant itself. Or it may be a type of 'virus' inherent to just that cultivar--is that possible? Can't imagine it would be exclusive to a cultivar but we really know very little when it comes to the many and varied micro-lifes of this world. Amazing discoveries are being made all the time, and from the incomparable enormous sizes of things in the Universe and beyond, to the very most minute microscopic forms of life--it seems endless and only fully comprehended by the Maker of all things small and large and 'us' inbetween!! Simply mind blowing! Does ANYONE have one that has never or rarely presented the rusty spots?

Oh lucky, lucky you. I have only seen Paris and I just long to visit the rest of France. If anyone wants to go, let me know!

Oh, now I am the one who is jealous! Not sure what your travel plans are but I would recommend Normandy if you have the time. Very beautiful and historic.

I can't wait to see pictures, too!

Enjoy the rest of your trip! France is one of my favorite European countries. (Along with Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Great Britain....well, you get the idea!)

I am lucky and I'm also very thankful to have the opportunity to visit this amazing country.

Meeting up with Meredith was planned a while back. She and her friend were planning a trip to Europe and they picked their time to have few days overlap with ours. No fool that girl.....no accommodation expenses and of course Daddy was picking up the dinner tabs!

Unfortunately we won't get to Normandy this time but there will be a next time !

Tomorrow we explore the vineyards of Medoc .....Annie tell Elery I'm making sure I get his share of the reds!

Hi Sharon - big waves from Thunder Bay! Chance and I just got back from France about 3 weeks ago. We did 5 days in Paris, 8 days in Provence and 2 in Nice. I agree it was so lovely. You must be into lavender season - we were too early. We loved it too and hope to go back in two years. Enjoy, say hi to Clive and Meredith for us.

We will be down in Toronto Aug 21 - you guys around that week?

Yes, you did raise Meredith right, both because she meets you there AND that she makes Dad pick up the dinner tab, LOL.
