Yep, I'll be there!

Anyone nearby want to meet?

Recommendations on dining?

Activities?

I'll only have 3 full days and it's during the Date Festival, so we'll be there, but not sure if it's a "whole day" thing.

The Village Festival on Thursday night for sure.

I'll arrive Wednesday afternoon, the 16th and fly home early on Sunday, the 20th.

Would love to plan a lunch or dinner or??? with anyone nearby. My mom will be with me and she's always up for meeting new people!

Lots of time, but let me know!

Any if anyone has "can't miss" restaurants, shows, activities, I'd love to get first hand experiences!

Hey Deanna, that coincides with the Palm Springs Modernism Week, which I missed this year. I may have to go, now that you're going to be in town. I won't have concrete plans yet though.

"When leaves start turning brown I assume this means not enough water" No, the dessicated leaves will first curl up tight axially to reduce surface exposure to wind and sun. Watering the roots will cause the leaves to uncurl within minutes. Then you could wait until they leaves curl up again. This will give you baseline of the water requiremnts. It's not enough water to allow it to thrive, but it's enough to keep it comfortablly alive. Adding a little more water than above will probably remove water questin from the bamboo's growing restiction. I badly overwatered a new Bambusa tuldoides, had the same symptons as you did, many leaves turning yellow and dropping. The seller told me to stop watering. I removed all the yellow leaves to have completely green baseline. With no more water, the green leaves stayed green until they curled from dryness. Then I started watering again with a much lower volume and frequency. The plant has thrived since then. Overwatering bamboo in well draining soil I think is pretty hard to do, so I find it hard to believe that your problem is over-watering EXCEPT if your bamboo's soil drains very poorly, remains waterlogged.

Although all-out Hollywood Regency is not my particular taste, he has really hit the nail on the head when it comes to an interpretation of MCM Palm Springs. The architecture of these houses (for good or bad) is so specific, that it really demands a particular esthetic. I have seen a few articles on these houses where the accumulation of traditional detailing that was added on had to be stripped off to reveal the original intent. I think he did a great job interpreting the spirit of the house.

Hi Jerry, I’m curious if anyone else has an opinion about this, but here’s my take on the issue! I’d be inclined to remove the WOWs! Mother Nature is almost always pretty good about “taking care of” her things, and by putting them in the WOWs you’re kind of “messing with Mother Nature!” If they were mine I’d leave the mulch you added where it is for now, but just leave anything that grows above that “unprotected.” Keep an eye on the weather, which I’m sure you’re already doing, and if we’re gonna get down into the low teens or colder, then I’d stick a (big enough) pot or box or something over them for the nite, making sure it gets taken off as soon as the sun comes out the next day. If we get more snow (IT’S MARCH!) and they get “snow covered,” and then it’s gonna get COLD, they should be just fine on their own. Things that are covered with snow (at least a couple inches) will stay right at freezing! I found that out when I had a (indoor/outdoor) thermometer covered in a snowstorm one time, and for the next several days I couldn’t figure out why “the temperature” never wavered from exactly 32 degrees—even when our Typically Denver weather warmed up considerably! Finally I went—DUH—and realized that the remote sensor was buried in a pile of snow! My fear if you leave the WOWs on, as you said, is that you’ll be promoting much more new growth than they’d have at this time of the year if exposed to “normal” temps—especially with a southern exposure, and if they start to grow fast, they’ll quickly outgrow the WOWs and then the new, tender foliage will have no resistance at all to the COLD, and you could wind up with some serious damage that would take a long time for it to recover from. If they’re left “out in the cold,” yeah, you could wind up with a few singed leaves now and then, but they’ll recover much more easily from that than if the entire plant gets badly clobbered at some point. I have lots of things that are way ahead of where they’d normally be at this time of the year, and I didn’t do anything at all during this last cold weather—most of the time everything was snow covered, but “between storms” some things had had the snow cover melt off and they were exposed. A few things DID have foliage damaged, but the basic plants are ok, and the cold should have slowed things down to a more “normal” rate for at least a while now. I always have pots (of all sizes) ready in case we should get some extreme temps in the next couple months—which is almost inevitable! I really am curious what others would be inclined to do in this situation! You have lots of clematis, David! Where do you stand on the issue? Anybody else??? Skybird

I highly recommend Johnny Costa's Ristorante, which Kevin and I found because it happened to be close to our hotel. The decor is a bit campy (but entertaining), and they have an autograohed photo of Frank Sinatra, who used to eat there. It has a very typical menu, but the food is excellent. I had swordfish, and it was moist and tender and NOT previously frozen. It can get crowded, and so reservations would be recommended, unless you want to risk waiting at the bar.

I wish I could go, but we have other plans that week-end. I'd also like to go to the date festival, but I'm especially upset that I missed the tamale festival in Indio, which occurs in early December.

So, here we are!
Deborah and I in Palm Springs!

We were so busy walking around, eating and talking I completely forgot to take pictures. Just as we were parting, I remembered and asked a young lady on the street to snap our picture.

Thanks for meeting me, Deborah and I'll give you a call if I get back down there!!

We ate at the Fisherman's Market restaurant and the place was packed. I had Jumbo scallops off the "Lifeboat" menu and Deborah ate Langostino Tacos.
Food was good, but I wouldn't call it fantastic.

I had a grand time meeting up with you too Deanna...and being able to have your Momma along was a real treat.

Yes, our picture is awful, but oh well.
We didn't stay too long at the festival and I don't think I bought anything. We were planning to go to the College of the Desert market on Saturday, so I waited to load up there!!

Annie, Yes! I had a date shake at an actual date farm on Saturday. Delicious! Sort of caramel flavor without the cloying sweetness. Perfect afternoon snack.

I'll be back I'm sure since my mom goes 2-3 times a year and I've got a place to stay! Just airfare, food and spending money is all I need!

I hope I get to see you the next time - Kevin and I usually go about once a year, and for some reason, I didn't find this thread soon enough. Plus on holiday week-ends, the hotels generally make you stay longer. We've been staying in Desert Hot Springs lately because we like the spas there, and it is less expensive, although there are practically no restaurants worth going to there, except for one decent Thai restaurant and a pizza place that is pretty good - at least it has a brick oven.

I have a bunch of dates in the fridge, and so maybe I'll make my own date shake. I bought them to put in my granola, but I've been using other dried fruits.

Can't see your picture here at work, but I'll check for it at home.

Oh, Lars, don't even get me started about Desert Hot Springs.... (grin).

We tried to go out there and find the Cabbot Museum. What a fiasco! Extremely poor signage, a wreck and closed roads leaving Palm Springs, short on time before the Follies.

Needless to say, it wasn't a pleasant experience and we never did find the darned museum! It looks interesting. Have you ever been there?
