Plumbing Question for the CF'rs

Hi all-

I'm posting here because I know so many of you and feel comfortable with your opinions.

We're about to undertake a remodeling/redecoration project and as such we're going to update two more bathrooms. I have seen Moen & Price Pfister sets that would fit the budget, however we've heard a couple of negative reports on Price Pfister's quality. What's your experience with either of these companies products?

We just bought a Price Pfister for our basement bathroom. Have not installed it yet, but it seems like a decent faucet. Quite heavy and not full of plastic parts.

I think there may be lower end pieces with many of the brands, along with their higher quality pieces. My suggestion would be if you find something you like, take it out of the box and look it over, feel the weight and check the inegrity of the piece befoe you buy it.

The worst faucet in our house is a Delta that our plumber installed. It's a cheap piece of junk!

I have a Price Pfister in my bathroom. It is chrome and the chrome has started to peel off. On the other hand, it has not leaked or had any other problems, but the peeling chrome is not acceptable. I wouldn't buy PP again.

I just ordered a Kohler faucet for my new bathroom. I have a Grohe Ladylux in the kitchen, which is nice but not really worth the expense.

Oh -- and stay away from Danze. I had that in the kitchen and it was a mess. I have read poor reviews of their products.

I truly believe that the big box stores carry inferior quality items. I'd buy online or from a plumbing supply store.

Jenny I am assuming that you are talking about the threads that connect the two half's of the union. If this is the case then the answer is no. On one half of the union there is an oring and when the other half is pressed against the oring that is what makes the seal. The tape might make it easier to undo the union in the fall. I have never done this so I do not know but I could see how it may make it harder to take apart. Mike

Several things would need to come together to make this work. As a combination building inspector with several rural jurisdictions, we would work with you on this with the following conditions: Time frame from basement work to upstairs work would need to be fairly short, perhaps 12-18 months. No imminent code changes expected during this time. A layout for the first floor bath that will NOT change. No change in inspection service, which may happen if your jurisdiction is using a contract firm. Complete and informative pictures are taken during the basement bath remodel. Licensed plumber is doing the work. If you can meet all these points, we would allow you to proceed with the basement bath with minimal re-work for the second bath. However, you should verify all of this with your local inspection service before moving forward.

I think you are asking about the expansion plug used in place of a threaded clean-out plug. Odors can drive one nuts when they have eyes and nose on site,I don't even attempt locating them from 1k miles away. Water heaters often impart a sulfur odor to water. This isn't the silver bullet you were expecting but here's a test. Double bag a 20-30 gallon trash can with over-size plastic bags. Sit can on stool.blocks or other support tall enough to allow tapeing bag opening over shower head. Run shower the minimum time it normally take's for odor to be detected. If no odor is detected,,,,,,,,until bag is opened you've found the source. If no odor before or after opening bag,empty can into drain to see if odor is then detected. Report back with results and we can talk about remedies.

I had custom cabinets done for my remodel - kitchen, baths, office/den. I had a separate contract for the design, construction and installation of these with the cabinet maker. He was someone my GC was familiar with and so there were no issues in terms of coordinating - if there were I didn't hear about them as they worked anything out on their own. My designer designed the style and configuration of the cabinets and was the "professional" who oversaw them. However cabinets are to a great extent a discrete element just like a floor might be a discrete construction element. A tile shower cannot be "divided" in terms of the responsibility and you would want the GC to take full responsibiity for the trades people who do it because if there are any issues and you have hired separate tradespeople people will pass the buck as to why there are issues or attempt to whereas if there are problems and you have had the job done by one person and his chosen subcontractors the GC is responsible for ensuring that any problems are solved.

The plumbers who did our bathroom spoke very scornfully of Price-Pfister.

I just went downstairs and checked. I would have sworn the new one was Price Pfister, but alas....it's a Delta.

Didn't think I'd buy Delta again since our kitchen faucet is such crap! LOL This one seems much nicer, tho. I think the plumber installed a Delta cheapie... Guess we'll find out.

I've had no problem with the one PP faucet I bought, but then again it's only been a couple years since I installed it parents in my parents' bath lav.

I've never bought high end fixtures, but have had problems which I felt were premature with Kohler, Delta and Moen. Honestly a slightly higher problem rate with Moen. But I'll tell you one thing about them - over the years they seem to be typing up overnight labels for free replacement parts and even full fixtures before I can even finish b;tch;ng about my problem. First rate customer service IMO. I have Moen fixtures awaiting installation in my upstairs bath.

I just added an entirely new bathroom in my upstairs late last fall. I put in a Grohe shower setup because I wanted no problems because of all the tile. But I saved some $$ on the sink faucet and used one by PP. It was the look I wanted and if there is a problem, I figured that it would be easy to change. So far so good.. working fine.

I did plumbing and remodeling for years. I just bought a Moen for my Kitchen Sink.
It was the only one I was happy with, because of the length.
It had to reach 2 sink bowls.
Never had a problem with Moen. Did with Delta.

If anyone has a VA Card , Lowes and Home Depot,
gives a 10 % discount to Vets.

It has been shown that high-end kitchen appliances may not last as long, and I would assume that some high-end plumbing fixture are the same.

The reason is because the manufacturers do not sell too many of these highly styled items and cannot afford the costs to improve on durability.
