I'm getting married!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you believe that? I mean seriously...me...getting married!

Me!!!

Married!!!

I am SO very excited.

We have a piece of land that is 4.6 acres of paradise. The town should approve the house plans within a week. When that's done, we break ground on a SIX bedroom home.

I'm getting married!

About an hour ago I pulled out all my old posts from two and a half years ago. I read every word. It was so raw. Can you believe how my life has changed in that time? You were all so supportive of me and there for me when I lost Bob. Remember that first Christmas, just 10 days later?

Remember me joining the widow support group? Who knew I'd meet such an amazing man there. Who knew he'd also have three kids!!!!! Who knew where my life would go?

I'm getting married!!!!!!!!!!

The reality is that for most of the people in the buying pool for houses at that price range in Bethesda and other close-in DC suburbs, time is a more valuable commodity than money. At that price bracket, most potential buyers are 30-something professionals, many of whom are married with (or planning to have) kids. For many people in that demographic, it's worth it to spend more for a house that requires no work, because the tradeoff for a cheaper house with major projects is that you have to spend the time to plan a remodel, hire someone to execute it, then either live through it or move out (which takes even more time and planning). When I bought my house 10 years ago, I was single, 30 years old, and worked at a law firm. I had the flexibility to extend my rental until some work could be done to my house, so I bought a house that needed cosmetic updates, and got a good price in a hot neighborhood where houses were selling for above asking within a few days. The prior owners 'totally 80s' choices were not appealing to buyers, and also did nothing to highlight the portion of the house that was the original structure from the early 1900s. Once I moved in, I never had time for the DIY projects I envisioned (such as gel staining the kitchen cabinets!), and the house felt like a 'work in progress' for a while. Now I am married with a baby, and I still have a full time job. If I were house hunting now, a house that was 'move in ready' and required nothing more than paint and decorating, would be worth a lot of $$. Because the time and effort required for major renovations would be a tipping point in terms of stress and quality of life, which is hard to quantify in dollars. And I say this as someone who has a decent 'eye' for imagining the potential a house has. In fact, I just recently moved back into my house, after moving out for the summer for a major remodel and addition (totally worth it, but totally exhausting and stressful and time-consuming). Many of my friends who are not into decorating and house stuff also have trouble even imagining the 'after' that a house could be, and overestimate how much it would cost (even at the inflated prices in this area) to make changes. So I think for the average buyer here, 'move in ready' is worth $$$$$, and a 'needs remodeling' house may not even be considered unless it's a tear down to build a mcmansion.

Maddie, sleep is so important to feeling better. I've been there too. The support you need for side and back sleep can be different, and your mattress was probably selected for your side sleeping preference and has definitely conformed to your sleeping habits. Even the pillow under your head can make a difference. Have you tried a topper on your mattress? Even if the firmness of your mattress is ok for back sleeping, your mattress may have some hills and valleys that prevent it from supporting the small of your back or letting your hips and shoulders be properly supported. A topper can help fill the gaps and may help give you support you need. They can also just be a soft support layer when you are dealing with discomforts. A different pillow can help too. Whatever you need, I hope you find it and get some rest so you can deal with everything else easier.

Absolutely beautiful. I love it!!! (Now that you said she's wearing a white dress I blew it up and see it just fine. However on a quick first glance on a small screen it did indeed look like a severed head. I would not recommend changing a thing about it just because of that though. LOL. It's incredibly well done and in person would be a very different experience than on a tiny screen...) You have a great eye. Normally I'm not a fan of black baseboards, but seeing your eye and aesthetic I say go for it. It's not quick, but it's not particularly hard - just tedious. Thank you for sharing with us. Lori, your story is the one that got me 'hooked' on this site soon after your husband died.

I saw the outpouring of love and support and knew that the people here were good people.

Congratulations Lori! Thank you so much for keeping us posted. And I think it is amazing that you've found love, TWICE, (or maybe more for all I know) but that must be a reflection of your heart filled with love, you are definately a loving person. Now you can fill us in with "Brady Bunch" type stories, lol!

Shaun, I do come around quite often, actually. I just don't get the time to post in my crazy world. Still, every time I see a post from you I think back to how my son read an email from you that I left on the screen accidentally. You said you were there for whatever I needed. He thought I was having an affair with some guy Shaun, just weeks after Bob passed. Too funny.

Pam, yes it IS Seth. LOL (You cracked me up). Many people don't get what I've had in a lifetime. I've been fortunate enought to have it twice. There are definitely two angels watching over us.

Duane (and other who said it), we ARE just like the Brady Bunch. We've heard that a few times lol. Three boys, three girls. No Alice, though, unfortunately.

Maddielee, what a sweet comment. The people here are SO good.

For those who don't know me, I don't post much more, but I used to be a "regular." On December 14, 2007, my DH woke up with chest pains. As I drove him to the hospital he stopped breathing and we were never able to bring him back. We had three kids together, 14, 12, and 6 at the time. He also had two sons from a previous marriage that I was/am very close to. We struggled through that Christmas and eventually I joined a widow support group, where I met Seth, a widower who had lost his wife at 33 very tragically, also leaving three kids, now 14, 11, and 6.

To this day, even after almost two and a half years, telling the story still helps. Crazy, isn't it?

Anyway, Maddielee, yes, this group got me through it.

We are thinking we're going to get married Labor Day weekend. Unfortunately the house probably won't be done by then, but with my oldest going away to college, that seems to be the most logical weekend. If that's what we decide to do, we'll either live apart (6.7 miles, but who's counting) until the house is built or cram all the kids in one house. Not sure the tight quarters is the best way to start our lives together. It would probably only be a couple of weeks, though. Still undecided on most details except that we want it to be simple. The most important detail of the day will be the love in the room (or backyard).

Lori, Elery and I still live three hours apart. It's difficult, but it's doable, and I know you will both be fine.

Heck, I keep telling Elery that we can probably stay married forever if we don't have to live together! (grin)
