White Cloud gets famous

I was waiting in line at the grocery store and picked up the May issue of Family Circle, the one with the lilacs on the front. I was sucked in by "Walk off 10 pounds by summer", LOL.

Anyway, I flipped to a story on Share Our Strength and the Great American Bake Sale and what do I find on page 74 under "Bridging the Gap". Sigh. A local family. One I know. In White Cloud. There we were, with the statistic that 80% of the children in the White Cloud School District were eligible for reduced fee lunches, unemployment is rampant and kids are signing up for backpacks full of healthy snacks to take home. 20% live in "extreme poverty".

Now, this isn't anything I didn't know, heck, I live here. But having it noticed on a national basis is somewhat disconcerting. I know we struggled and we sometimes went hungry when I was a child, but I had hoped that life would be easier for today's children, but apparently not.

So, the next time you hear Sandra Lee pitch Share Our Strength, don't cringe. The bake sale money is going here too.

That is sad. It's also sad when it's hidden and we don't always know that people are struggling so.

Next time I'm at the store I'll read it in line. I never buy those magazines -- I figure they are there to entertain you until it's time to put the groceries on the conveyor belt.

Donald, First off- THANK YOU for taking the time to try to help me solve this mystery. I totally agree about the bloom reaemblance. The thing that throws me off about White Cloud is that the descriptions of habit that I've found and the zone ratings don't seem to fit. It says its hardy to Zone 6b- and I'm in Zone 5. It basically has no die back to speak of. More importantly- I've not been able to find a photo of a White Cloud that resembles my large specimen with it's fairly stiff, semi-arching canes. This thing grew to very large within a year and huge within 2 years (as large as it is now). I found a photo on HMF of White Cloud (below) at the Alnwick Gardens and I had found this same photo previously on google images. The way the branches of these White Cloud roses are on the ground/in the grass couldn't possibly happen with the rose I have. It actually is VERY thorny, bare brown, small tree like canes up to at least 2 or 3 feet up with fairly stiff, arching branches that hang down to about 2 feet off the ground. The thorniness of this rosÃÂ© supersedes that of all my other roses (>40 other rosÃÂ© species). It seems like every time I've found a rosÃÂ© that seems to fit- there's always one big something that's 'off'. Also- the leaves on the specimen I have are very dark green and glossy. BM Flat paint ? & BM Cloud White & Navajo White

I had the flashing problem with BM Muresco ceiling paint - don't know about their other "flat" paints but this is what my painter told me. We have BM Regal Matte on the walls, it doesn't seem to hold up to scrubbing w/o "burnishing" as well as CR suggested, but you can wipe stuff off. The darker colors (Antique Jade, Summer (blue)) seem to flash a bit too when touching up. But the Navajo White touches up very well. The Navajo White is kind of a ivory-bone, very neutral but a lot less yellow than the Filtered Sunlight I had originally considered (painted a sample) for my kitchen/family room (south and east windows made Sunlight look really yellow). I don't know that I'd want to use it on my ceilings though - depends on what your wall color is. If it's something from the same card, but darker, maybe, but I wouldn't use it with walls that were a totally different hue. Here's the east wall of my family room. Navajo White walls with Muresco ceiling white ceiling. The walls are showing a little yellower than they look in person, but not much. They also look a little green (at least on my monitor) but it's not green at all. It's definitely not "white" though. The good thing is, it's a standard color so you can get a gallon and try a sample, if you don't like it you can return it.

Glacier White Corian with BM Cloud White Walls??

I've had glacier white corian counters for 10 years now, and I still love them. I did extensive tests to make sure I could get stains out before I committed to them. I got a large sample, and left red wine, blackberries, green juice, olive oil, wet coffee grounds, etc. on the corian sample for days, and then cleaned it. Stuff like that will not come off with a simple spray cleaner, but when I have to really get a stain out, I put a little bit of bon ami on a damp paper towel and scrub it out like that, and I've never had a stain not come off immediately. These days, my worst stains are from turmeric and oil mixtures, and they come out with the bon ami method. One thing to note if you are going to try this - you will see a difference in the sheen where you've scrubbed with bon ami. But I've scrubbed my entire counter at one time or another, so all of the initial sheen is now a bit more matte, but it's still bright white. I've nicked my counter, and scratched it, but since it's white, it really doesn't show up very much. I feel like when it's time to get my kitchen updated, I can just get the corian surface-buffed, and it will be like brand-new sheen-wise. I would totally put glacier white counters in my next house. Love them!

Repainting - simply white trim & white dove or cloud cover walls?

OK I will tell you that until you know what your countertops will be, picking color for your cabinets is going to be very tricky. As to BM Simply White for trim, that is in the Yellow Hue family, and it has a Chroma of .5 which means it has very little color in it; and it has an LRV (light reflective value) of 90. 100 is highest reflective number so that will reflect a lot of light. Nice for trim, and I like "satin" for the finish. Now for wall color. BM White Dove has a Chroma of .58 and an LRV of 83. We like more separation of Chroma (at least .20) and this is way too close. I don't think that will work. So you are in a tricky spot not knowing some key variables such as countertop colors. I think if you want light colors, I would do either of these two colors, but use different "finishes". It will vary from room to room due to light conditions. Since your carpet is tan, and your flooring is dark brown, I think I would lean toward the BM White Dove since it has a bit more warmth to it than Simply White. SW Alabaster has nice lightness and many have used it for both trim and walls, etc. Use Satin finish for your trim, flat or matte for walls and ceiling.

How sad, but it is wonderful that the community bonds to support a family, despite the poverty. With an 80% rate eligible for free lunches, I certainly hope that your school district & library are receiving the grant funds available through Erate to for Internet connectivity & telecommunications. That rate of poverty could result in substantial cost savings to be used in additional ways to benefit the community.

Ellen, I don't know about the library, I know the schools within the intermediate school district and the county government gets internet connections through the local tech school at no charge. I'm only assuming that the libraries do too.

Other customers are charged a monthly rate, so I'm guessing they make enough from other services to cover the free connections for non-profits but I don't know where the tech school gets their funds.

Michigan is still leading the U.S. in unemployment and in jobs lost and we're still losing them. Statewide unemployment is over 14% but our area is hovering between 20 and 24%. We've always had much lower wages and higher unemployment than other areas but we were traditionally a "bedroom" community for bigger places like Grand Rapids. Then gas got to be $3 a gallon and people moved, they couldn't afford to commute 100 miles round trip every day. Just a few years ago Newaygo County was one of the fastest growing counties in the state, but no more.

With almost no industry other than agriculture (we do have the Gerber Baby Food Company and Magna Donnelly, but Donnelly is a car parts manufacturer and that says enough about their employees currently), there is virtually no "local" job market.
