Wasted food - would you say something?

Today I ordered a quarter pound of ham on the deli line at my supermarket. The guy sliced a bunch, threw it on the scale, it registered .46 and he went back to slicing. I said, "I asked for a quarter!" and he came back and, without a word, removed slices until the scale read .26. The ham in his hand? Tossed into the garbage.

I wish I would have had the quick presense of mind to stop him. I'd have rather paid the extra $2.50 and done something constructive with the ham than to see him waste it like that. On the other hand, I couldn't help but think that if it were policy to give me the extra for free, there would be a local demographic that would catch on to this "ruse."

I make no apologies for eating animals, but wasting them like this - or any food - gives me pause. Would you say something to management?
