A Flower show

I want to invite all members of the Cooking Forum in the FL area to my Daylily Club's annual Flower show. It is the Tamp Daylily Society and the show is being held at the First Baptists Church on Gandy Blvd. in St. Petersburg. The funerals of all the sheriffs officers and police officers killed recently in the line of duty were held at this church. Our show will be open to the public as soon as the flowers are finished being judged. It is a American Hemerocallis Society accredited show and we have to follow their rules for the show. We will also have a plant sale that will be open to the public while the flowers are being judged. The show will close at 2:30 due to a church employee's wedding that same afternoon so come early!

I am so sorry I forgot the date. It is on May 7th. I will be clerking so look for me there.

I personally like variety- more of the less known stuff. There's sometimes a display or two that shows something different than tulips, purple muscari and daffodils, but rather rare. That was what made the lily of the valley so refreshing. The competition area is the place to see the more rare items. I do spend a good allotment of time there, but pictures of lone plants in pots is less impressive, ;)

I love it Laura! Love the oddballs. Hope you win and post pictures of your plants here. My biggest plant show trek was to Floreade in the Netherlands. It happens every 10 years. I planned our vacation around that one. I didn't love it though. Seemed more geared to kids/education. My favorite plant show of all time is Chelsea Flower Show in London. I have been maybe 6 times or so and it is my nirvana. Pure perfection of plant material. And my husband does not mind going because of the Pimm's tent. :) He's British and it is his favorite summertime drink.

This year's show was so much better than last year's. We had over 189 flowers entered and that number did not include the off scape flowers and the seedlings . Our off scape board was covered in off scape blooms and partially covered on the back display side. Normally I do not have flowers to take but this year I had 8 flowers to enter in the show. I won 5 yellow ribbons which is 3rd place, and I won 3 red ribbons too. I was happy to just have flowers to enter so I am not unhappy about not winning a blue ribbon or a major award.

Sounds like a fun day and congatulations for your ribbons. Wish there was a daylily show on the east coast. I've been going to a few orchid shows though.

Where on the east coast are you talking about? The east coast of FL or the US east coast? The club's over in Orlando Sanford area put a show on that is always after our show. My club always has the first flower show of the year unless a regional or national convention is being held that same date.
To find out where clubs are in your area, go to the AHS website at www.daylilies.org, and click on Regional Information. It will take you to a page that shows all the regions of the membership in the AHS( American Hemerocallis Society) Florida is Region 12 so click on the region you live in and check the clubs to see if there is a club near you.

CONGRATULATIONS on your ribbons!

I jealous, the only things I can grow are weeds, but I do that really well and many kinds.

Cathy, you should try growing some daylilies, they thrive on neglect. They are really a tough plant to kill. Once the plant is established and gets water at least once a week. it will bloom and increase. The more water it gets, the more blooms and more increase of the fans.

I do have some daylilies that I got from Freecycle. They are under and oak tree and surprisingly came back after the freeze this winter. Good to know about regular watering, I'll go out right now and give them some!
