Good news again at the Gellchom house!

This time it's Thing Two's turn. Addie is engaged!

Her fiance is Sahar, and he is from Jerusalem. He is studying civil engineering at Technion in Haifa, and Addie is finishing up her master's in Holocaust Studies at Haifa University. She plans to become a dual citizen, work for a year, and then continue toward a PhD.

We all ADORE Sahar. He is funny and sweet and smart and they bring out the best in each other. They are a real match.

They are planning to get married on Labor Day Weekend 2014 (like Thing One and his wife did in 2011). Here we go again ...!

They did it backward: first they picked a date, then they ordered a ring, then he proposed (with a toy ring, as the real one wasn't ready yet). Don't ask me. "Modern children!" as Tevye says. But it's not important -- what's important is that they are so happy and so right for each other.

And I couldn't wait to tell this wonderful community of lovely friends. You are like an extended family, so -- mazal tov to us all!

Lol, Annie! I'm sure we are indeed in a honeymoon period of our own, and there will of course be bumps along the way. But laying the foundations for a good relationship makes it a lot easier to navigate bumps. My mom and I thought about it and we couldn't remember any conflicts between ourselves or with my in-laws when we planned my wedding. We will meet the rest of the family at the twin sister's (Emergency Backup FMTO)'s upcoming wedding. Thing One and FMTO want to do most of the planning themselves, with everyone pitching in money. Fortunately, it looks like they are going to take me up on my offer and hire the gem of a coordinator we use here. She charges us very little and probably saves more than that anyway with her connections and experience, and she doesn't push choices or advice, just makes the hosts' ideas happen and runs interference with vendors, etc. -- tactics, not strategy, as it were. She helped us with the kidz' bar and bat mitzvahs, and I cannot imagine doing something like this without her. She also said she'd help me plan the other events of the weekend for no extra charge. Perhaps most important for our situation, though, is that SHE can work directly with Thing One and FMTO, so I don't have to worry about helping without it sounding like I'm trying to take over or push my preferences. They won't be afraid to tell her they do or don't want to do something, as they might with me. She called me today to ask about bands or something, and I told her to call Thing One and to leave me out of it as much as possible. This will make it MUCH easier to keep my mouth shut! But I still don't want to wear beige.

Leslie, I don't have a house....that's just it. When we bought the land, there was no house. We built a building, 24 x 36 to hold my husband shrimping stuff and welding machine, tool, etc. Had plans drawn to build a house. Then had a very traumatic incident in our lives that ended up costing us $60,000 and at the same time, daughter getting ready to go to college and shrimping going downhill more every season. When the traumatic incident was resolved, I was so broke...in every sense of the word...that all I wanted to do was get away from everyone. My husband was working every day, trying to get back to even, and so when our daughter left to go to college, I moved here, and moved into the building. I had lights, but no water. I have lived the past 10 years with no kitchen, no decent bathroom, nothing. We framed up inside the building and made rooms and planned to make it into a house, but never had the money to do anything past that. For a year and a half, we lived in an old RV that someone gave us, but it started leaking so bad that sealing it, tarping it, and doing everything you can think of, did no good, so I moved back into the "shop". I'm not trying to illicit sympathy about my situation. We turned down a half a million dollars for this property. I could live in any kind of house I wanted...but if I had to live close to people, you might as well shoot me. And, I would live under a tree before I would leave this place...mainly because I have big time issues with privacy. I can tell you every detail of my life...that doesn't bother me, but if I walk outside and see another living soul, I am stressed. Sooo, my husband went to school to get his tow boat license, and now he has a good job, and we have money again. So, we have saved since he started it in May to go on a house.

I agree with Lori. It's best to pick from all the colors already in your brick -and there are many. It looks like that's what they did when they chose colors the last time, although I wouldn't have favored the orange so much. There are lots of pretty shades of red in the bricks you could choose for you door, several to choose from undo the window. The wine looks like a mis-match in my opinion. I'm not big on paint colors but my description of paint I would choose would be a rustic red.

Thank you all! It is indeed exciting.

And it's so much fun to have all of you to share it with!

It does indeed seem like just a year and a half since Thing One's wedding -- oh, wait, it WAS. We don't even have the pictures from that one, and here I am planning another one.

It will be simpler this time, I think, because we are the only hosts, so it won't be planning by major committee. It was also so tricky last time because although we were the only local hosts, we were the groom's family, not the bride's, so we had to be extra careful. Of course, each wedding has its own challenges; now we have language and religious observance challenges to figure out, not to mention that Addie has very definite ideas of what she wants, some of which ain't cheap. But she is sensible and considerate, and I'm sure it will all work out fine. So far we're having fun.

I only wish I had the level of interest in minute details of things like dresses and flowers that she has. I know she wishes I would pore over pictures like she does. Honestly, most of the stuff looks all the same to me. But I will fake it til I make it!

Anyway, it's great to have you all along on the journey with me. You are such a big help, both practically and emotionally!
