Oh my Tricia! From reading the article it seems like someone really did get hurt by that hawk, but using the reverse 911 to inform people does seem a little over the top.

Last week when there was the threat of a snow storm coming, we got a call at 10:00 PM the night before a flake ever fell, informing us that we may or may not get a call the following day to let us know if schools may or may not be delayed in opening, may or may not be dismissed early and may or may not be cancelled at some point during the storm. I wonder if by next year we will be getting a call a week early saying we may or may not get the "may or may not" call!

Automated phone calling run amok. When my older son was in high school they implemented an automatic phone calling system to the parents for important messages. I think we got maybe two phone calls that first year to remind us of the standardized tests coming up. By the time my younger son graduated maybe 5 years later, we were getting multiple phone calls every month. I could not WAIT for him to graduate!

But regarding the actual article tricia linked to, is it just me or is anyone else thinking, "The Birds"?

That must be one angry Hawk!

This hawk is the talk of the town! Every place you go same thing..."Have you seen THE hawk?" lol

The assumption is that he's got a mate with a nest & he's taking his responsibility of protection quite seriously. He's trying to clear out the town, I guess. Hope he settles down before the tourists start showing up for the season or it's going to be wild around here. DH went for a walk this morning & took a rolled-up newspaper with him to fend off the hawk, if necessary. It wasn't. :)

I live in the movie The Birds our neighbor, who obviously never sleeps, lives up hill across the creek from us and has a balcony off her kitchen about 80 feet from us. A few years ago she decides to feed the crows. There birds are huge, noisy and they come before daybreak and start squawking. They sit on our roof and in the oak trees by the creek waiting for her. Then they have sentries all day that squawk back and forth just in case she comes outside again. It sound funny but I get so tired of getting woken up to several hundred birds screaming outside the bedroom window. I canÂt hear them with the widows closed but itÂs almost spring and boy IÂm not looking forward to it.

We did try talking to them but she seems to think that if she doesnÂt feed them a loaf of bread they may starve. They are totally trained now. DH bought a CD that claimed it would scare the grows away. He put a speaker outside and all it did is make me laugh it sounds like the Amazon jungle LOL. Our neighbor on the downhill side is upset because the birds are tearing some kind of something off his new roof. The forest service says we canÂt do anything about it. My only hope is DH is retiring and wonÂt have to get up and leave by 5:30an anymore so when they start really bothering him maybe he will try to figure out something to do about it.

So if you hear about a crazy woman in Kernville being jailed, in her bathrobe, for firing a shot gun at her neighbor you will know I finally went over the edge. My hope is she comes out empty handed and the birds get her just like in the movie. lol Oh and in the summer they sit out on that balcony and talk until 1 or 2 in the morning. They never sleep but I have heard her screaming out her window if a dog is barking a block away. lol donÂt you just love neighbors!

Claudia, I feel bad now that I complain about one dog barking. Maybe you could scare her with stories about Histoplasmosis? (Obviously, she has never watched the movie.) They'll starve? Poppycock. Crows have been feeding themselves long before she decided to open a buffet for them.

The hawk thing could be scary. They have wicked strong and sharp claws and beaks. The valley here if full of them right now. They congregate in the spring when the cattle are calving. Beautiful to see them soaring the currents. They usually avoid people, though.

I saw a large hawk in my back yard about a week ago. I was hoping it was there to catch squirrels, but it probably only catches small birds. Mockingbirds here chase the crows away, but I think crows like to be around people.

When my mother was a small child, her relatives told her that if she went outside without a bonnet, {{gwi:1444583}} would come down and cut off her hair. She had a fear of birds ever since and still does not like them.

DH stopped by our firehouse this morning to drop off cinnamon rolls. He learned THE hawk has attacked again. This time, he snatched a woman's purse from the top of the fence post where she had sat it while she unlocked her car & loaded up for the day. He swooped down, scared her badly, & flew off with the handle of her Vera Bradley (!) purse in his beak. So, now THE hawk is a confirmed thief. He swipped the headphones from some guy right off his head last week & now the purse. There's a warrant being issued. rofl The woman is furious about her bag & there's an APB out for a purple paisley Vera Bradley...

I'm a thinking this hawk's going to get his little self in some serious trouble if he doesn't calm down and do it soon! We've got a nature center right here in Mystic & they've been called in to help locate the nest. Guess the police want to know where to send the officer to deliver the warrant???! We know they've got cool stuff in their nest...BOSE headphones for him & a Vera Bradley for her!!

I know crows snitch stuff and grackles....and I know that robins like something white in their nest....I spotted one nest once by the length of toilet paper trailing out....some teenagers had Tee-peed a friend and the robin took advantage....but a Vera Bradly purse? She must not have had much in it....they say a hawk can only carry away 2 pounds at the most.....my purse weighs more than that for sure!
Poor thing must really be short of nest building stuff.

Make a phone call to the Borough and tell them to put out a pile of nesting material.
Put a sign on it " free nesting material " so the hawk can read it.
Hawks are really nice people.

Lou, I'm so glad you took a second to get a chuckle from some small town humor. The Borough has been bombarded with calls about this hawk. Everybody thinks they've got the nest's location. He's going to become a local legend. Sorta like the Willimatic frogs. "The hawk that make fools of us!"

Your carvings are spectacular, Lou! As an art major I have so much appreciation for the hours you've given to create such beautiful birds.

My thoughts & prayers are still with you. I am so saddened you must endure this pain. Please feel free to email me. I'm a good listener.

That hawk has expensive taste! Maybe they could set a trap with some Waterford bauble or an iPhone. :)
