Reporting back.

I just got back from the doctor's office. It is a mix of good and bad. He showed me the scans of the MRI and what it shows is inconclusive. He went over it slice by slice. (I guess that is why he wanted to discuss it in the office instead of an email.) No tumors or major strokes, which is good. I do have more white spots than is normal for someone my age, but you do get them when you age. It might have been caused by unnoticeable mini strokes but hard to say since I didn't have any symptoms of any kind of stroke.

So the only thing it could be is the beginning of Parkinson's. I have to go back to get checked over again between 4-6 months to see if there is any progression of the disease. Unless the tremors get very bad, he suggests I do not take the medication for the symptoms until I really need to take it. So basically just live with it.

Glad to hear it is not worse, but I'm sure you will be somewhat anxious about the results in 4-6 months. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts.

Glad to see that you are back and that the plumbing seems to be ok. I remember back in the old days when people used to keep rusty nails and plant them in the soil right next to the roots of the plants. Some people boiled the nails and poured the water on the edible plants to help cure people's "iron shortage". I don't know if it helped or hurt. I hope the docs can find out what's going on with your iron shortage.

Begonia, Repeat after me_I AM NOT SCARED!!! I swear plants know when you are afraid of them and will take every advantage to die on you. Confidence!!! Now on to your questions: Your soil mix is appropriate for wicking. Some people use a thinner wick for smaller plants and vice-versa. I do not. I like my reservoir go dry for a day or so before I re-fill it to let my plants dry a bit. If the plants become too dry, watering from the top will get the wick going again. You will have to experiment but as you are a confident plant person this will not scare you. Just stick your finger in the soil-if it's soaking, it's too wet but I don't think you'll have this problem. (Spraying the stem is unnecessary but not harmful). And you will have to pat your soil in somewhat. Just don't go at it like you're punching down bread dough. You do not need fancy grow lights. Go to HD and get a warm white and a cool white. Your fixture should have a reflector. (I have been using this combination since 1972.) I think the warm is labeled daylight or sunshine. If you want the reason for this, let me know. It's rather lengthy and it's very late so...you'll just have to trust me. (I can also rhapsody for quite a while on soil mixes in case you are interested). But...I digress...) I replace when my tubes get a dark ring around the ends, (very noticeable) or when growth and blooming start to slow. Be careful with new tubes. They are very strong in the beginning. As you have learned, plants of a genera are not all the same . Each cultivar and even each individual is different and will respond differently to your growing conditions. Just follow good AV growing practices and don't be afraid to experiment. And don't be discouraged when you lose some. We all lose some. Some plants are just naturally weak, some won't like you or your conditions and some are just suicidal. Just chalk it up to experience and move on. A plant that dies gives you room for something new! I have been at this plant business my entire life and there are still violets that refuse to bloom for me. Ex: Gillian. Grows like a weed. Will not bloom. I don't obsess over these non-bloomers. I give them to my neighbor and let her obsess. Instead of individual containers-why don't you get a tray-the kind annuals come in-with no holes. Add egg-crate and place your plants on this with the wicks extending through the egg-crate. This takes care of humidity (Question 4) and you won't have to figure out what containers to use (Question 5). It also makes it much easier to care for your plants when they are all together and all you have to do is water the tray. Let me know if you have more questions! Linda

thanks cat ! sue no hijack at all ! All info and stories about experiences are welcome . I am glad your DS has found something. Our other DS was let go almost the same time as DD...sigh...he had just started with a new company also and it was going so well...then boom...an MD made a mistake and overlooked something DS flagged...DS was fired and MD was reprimanded...sigh again louder. Since I worked in the medical field for many years this is not an unfamiliar scenario. Ah well..he is handling it very well and it will all work out. I will send good wishes to your DS ! I don't know whether to be happy or not. I guess I'll be happy that maybe things won't be so bad. I'm very happy it's not a malignant tumor!

Oh, Clare, that must have been trying for you. And the next 6 months will probably stretch out, too. Our next lunch, whenever you're ready, we'll have that Margarita with our chips and salsa!

Oh dear, Clare, I guess that's better than a malignant brain tumor or a stroke, but still not good.

I think "wait and see" is much harder than doing something. (sigh)

I'll be hoping that there is no progression of symptoms and that nothing gets any worse.

sorry....I was voting for a stroke....which is over and obviously caused minimal damage.
If the doctor you are seeing is not a neurologist....get a referral and take you pictures to him.

The doctor is a neurologist/neurological surgeon, so I think he knows his stuff. Like I said before - it's a mix, not the best news but not the worst either. Just have to wait and see.

Thinking of you! My Dad had Parkinson's. If affected his mind and his balance. He never had a tremor.

Clare, I'm sure sorry you have had to deal with this and now are somewhat in limbo. If only you really could just ignore it until the 4 to 6 month checkups. Here's to hoping any progression is extremely slow and responds well to any future treatments/medication.

Clare, I've read this post before, but I bet I didn't have time to say anything then, because I don't see where I've posted. I thought I did.

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about you, and wish the news was better, that they found something they could cure easily. Maybe the good news is that Parkinsons is getting so much attention now with famous people bringing it to the forefront. There's lots of research going into it. I bet there's improvements in the treatment happening all the time. I'll keep thinking of you.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Such a great bunch of people on this forum. Like I said before, I am still in the adjustment phase and probably will be for awhile. But I am not going to just curl up in a ball. I have planted my Spring veggie garden, bought 4 new roses to revitalize my rose bed and trying new recipes. I still have a million things I want to do! LOL
