Fixed key on keyboard. Brag.

The K key on my laptop keyboard kept getting stuck. The laptop is new and I planned to take it back for exchange or repairs. Big pain. Then I thought I bet I can do this.

I flipped the key off with a letter opener. Three parts went flying and I had no idea how to get them back on, or what order they went in except I knew the K went on top. I fiddled with every possible permutation and after an hour of hair tearing, I got it back on and it works!! It doesn't even stick anymore.

Anyway, I am so pleased with myself I had to tell someone (s). KKKKKK kkkkkkk. See?

I've replaced keyboards on a couple of laptops. It's actually a lot easier than you'd think. You need to remove a few screws and open it almost flat (so the screen is pointing straight up), then disconnect a thin ribbon connector, put the new keyboard in and reattach the screws (specific steps may vary a little bit, but it will be pretty similar). I've always used the original equipment. On a personal laptop where I did this, I bought a dead laptop of the same model on ebay and used it for parts. On a work laptop, it was on an extended warranty and they sent the keyboard by UPS. In my case, though, the keyboards were not working correctly. I think I'd be inclined to let the faded letters stay or use the paper/tape approach.

I have an ACER Aspire 3050 laptop and had the same problem with the touch pad and keyboard. I know this may seem simplified...but before you run through all the issues/processes offered to help your keyboard/mouse react again, try charging the battery for a night or two. The laptop did not work at full function right away (after the first night of charging) but did show some signs of improvement, like some aspects of the keyboard reacting. I had not used my laptop in a while due to a programming issue. By the time I had it fixed, the battery went dead. If the keyboard works without the battery in, after you finish working on the laptop, try keeping the laptop powered on with the battery in it when you are away or asleep. This will very likely charge the battery again and restore function to your keyboard. I am using the laptop keyboard to write this with what I originally thought was a corrupt battery, now functioning just fine. Remember, I noticed the night before that some keystrokes were showing, where there was no reaction before. The battery took more than one night to be up at full power...but it is fine now. I saved myself more than $40.00 by not purchasing a replacement. Hope this helps. :)

I have been using the FlyLady system and finding that the more I do my basic daily routines the more time I have for other things. For the past couple of weeks I've been doing a lot of purging and reorganizing. I went through and purged countless papers in DH's office as well as my own. We bought a bookcase yesterday and I spent a lot of time yesterday reorganizing my office and loading up the new bookcase with books. Today I reorganized 3 kitchen drawers, put a couple new organizers in. I unpacked 3 boxes just today (we moved here about 18 months ago, still haven't settled in totally due partially to the renovations we've been doing). I did more organizing and purging in my office today, got rid of old catalogues and magazines, reorganized drawers and cupboards, and now have empty storage space!!! DH built a bench seat for the kitchen for storage, hung a floating shelf in the kitchen, and a shelf for my chef statue. I find that once the purging is done and you have created suitable storage space for the things you use and love, the room really comes together as part of a lovely home! The problem is, DH wants to build everything, so in the meantime I have to make the best of the storage spaces I have, but every little bit helps! I find nothing makes me feel better than having a room that is clean, decluttered, and organized. If you're feeling uninspired try cleaning out a drawer, or buying a little storage shelf unit that you need, and sort through your things and display what you love and get rid of everything else! The feeling is contagious, it is sometimes hard to stop once you get going, which is why I need the Flylady system so much, 15 min. baby steps will get you there, so you still have time for the daily routines that keep your mind at peace!

My microsoft keyboard MANY years old had several missing letters. It didn't particularly bother me, not new to typing ;0) But I'd lost the upper case of one key, now cannot remember which one it was, and I replaced the keyboard with a Logitech because that was the ergo simple keyboard Staples happened to have in stock that day, trying to limit my trips into stores still. (it was probably a collection of those cookie crumbs Uptown had mentioned). Now I've replaced my computer with an all in one that's working out very well. I'm using the Logitech keyboard still. The all in one came with standard keyboard and mouse and they are white. I'm not a slob, but my mouse and keyboard do get dirty . I've put the white away and will turn to those when needed, but for now I'm fine with my dirt-hiding black that while isn't new, is only a few months old ;0) I have a P-Touch I use to make labels for things, but my tapes are clear with black lettering. It doesn't make helpful stickers for a black keyboard, but does work for plant labels on colored tags, file boxes etc.

Oh, Pam, that reminds me of the time our computer was acting up and misbehaving (it was so long ago I can't remember the specifics). After going through all the troubleshooting steps in the Help menu, we called Support, and the tech person (in India) told us to open up the CPU and do various tests and adjustments. Nothing worked. We were just about to wipe out the hard drive and reload all the programs when I noticed that the Alt key was stuck in a partially depressed position! Ummm, never mind.

I should have called you, instead!

I'm such a dork, but I am so proud of myself. I love it when I solve little, or even better, big, problems myself. Yeah, now I'm a computer whiz.

That's funny Sue. The other day I thought my tv had gone kerflooey when I realized I'd put a book down on top of the remote -- not the cable remote, but the old remote for the tv that I hardly ever use.

Giggling with glee! Love it when I learn a new skill. Now everyone will be bugging you to fix their keyboard Pam!

Shermann you sure can. I found out when I decided to clean my keyboard really well one day. Yes, they pop off. Just be ultra-careful with the stupid space bar. There are all kinds of doohickeys holding that sucker on. There are springs and a couple of rods that have to go over/under hooks. Something like that. ick!

If you decide to pop off a key just be sure to not let the parts go flying when popped. If possible, notice the order in which they come off and which side up. Took me awhile to get all that in order but I did fix it.

Rob, anyone would be crazy to let me mess with their computer.
