The house has sold....YIKES!

It's done, now we move on to the next phase of our life but before we do we have to pack and move! OY!

The closing is June 30th so we have lots of time but still and all deciding what goes, what stays and packing it all up is a titch over whelming.

We've decided to put everything in storage for a bit, well that was as of noon today. July and August we'll be at the cottage, early September to mid October we will be in Italy, so doesn't seem to make sense to get a place until after that.....I dunno know.....lots of decisions to make!

When in doubt run away......so instead of dealing with it all we are going on a road trip to Georgia and the Carolinas! Hoping we can make it into Florida because there are some folk I'd love to visit with there. Hopefully we will get our act together next week! LOL

Congrats Chase - that was amazingly fast, wasn't it?

Before moving to Jersey, we sold our house in Maryland and rented in PA for a year. I loved the sense of freedom.

This is a tough one and I feel for you. I am taking care of my dad, who has dementia but it is very mild right now. He can still dress himself, eats really good but can't remember short term things, like what he just ate. He is not ready for a home, but I know the time will come. As for your situation I would hold off on fixing the car and some how disable the other one. You have to, he should not be driving now. Also, if his potassium levels drop again make sure he goes to the hospital, then once in there talk to the social worker about placement in a nursing home. It would be easier on you if he went directly from a hospital setting to a nursing home. He is going to argue no matter what and you have to be prepared to stand your ground. Some times you need to treat them like a child, you are now the parent. Putting your foot down will be very hard, but must be done. Get the guns out of the house NOW! I had to do this with my brother when his parkinson's got worse. I had a trusted friend of his go over and take all of them. (my brother is a former police officer). Of course he is only 59 so it was really hard for him to face being in a nursing home the rest of his life. Sit you DH down and at least try to get through to him, maybe he will listen, maybe not. But you have to get all this off your chest and it is certainly worth the try. Do you have durable power of attorney for finances and durable power of attorney for health care? If not you need to get that done pronto. I know I am not much help, and I pray you will find the strength to get through this.

I was hoping to find a sofa quickly for my daughter, who moved into her first apartment couchless. Before ordering the Ava, I called Grandin Road to ask about availability and was told that the blue sofa was in stock and would be the quickest to ship. Once I placed the order, I was given a delivery window of December 6-13. Each time I checked the order status the estimated delivery date was postponed. I called customer service to ask about the order status and, each time, was told the sofa would ship out that day. However, the order status continued to show as "in process" with a new delayed delivery date. I then found a sofa locally that was in stock and available to deliver the same day, so I used the Grandin road chat feature to cancel the order. The chat agent said they would email the warehouse about the cancellation. The next day, the order status still showed as "in process" with a new delayed delivery date. I then called Grandin road to cancel the order again with the same results. After canceling by phone the second time, I received a text message saying my order had shipped. I emailed Grandin road to let them know I had canceled the order, and the next day they charged my credit card for the sofa I had canceled four times. When I asked for a refund, I was told they would request one, but it could take a few weeks. Thankfully my credit card company was willing to reverse the charge, as I don't have confidence that grandin road would have handled the refund any better than they handled the order or cancelation. I am also relieved not to own a product from them. I recommend something other than Grandin road.

The "flyover" house in my post above was a concept--not an actual house. The idea was to provide cheap new housing fast in crowded urban areas of Port Elizabeth, S.A. The company does not seem to exist anymore while the principal runs hotels and restaurants. There are hundreds of capped bungalows in our city. But none that I know of that were done on stilts. Below is a capped home I renoed (interior only) that started as a bungalow circa 1920. Capped bungalow. Danforth Village, Toronto. Sold 11/17 for C$935k The only advantage I see is that you might be able to live in the existing house with less disruption during the construction phase. Short-term gain for long term pain. Move out and do it right!

We did a large addition using panelized construction from Davis Frame in NH. We're extremely happy with the outcome and the quality of the product. As far as I could tell there was no difference in cost vs stick framed, but the quality was better, the amount of waste was much less (they built the whole thing in CAD from our architect's drawings then did an optimized cut list and their computer controlled saw cut and labeled all the parts. All the waste from a 1200 sf building fit in two 55 gallon drums.) All the bevels and miters were perfect, everything came out near perfectly straight and plumb, air sealing was excellent. The main difference was a saving of about two months on the construction calendar; our crew was able to work on rehabbing the old part of the house while the addition was being assembled in the factory. Watching it go up in two days was fun. Make sure your concrete foundation sub can follow a plan exactly, fudging after the fact is not easy.

Three months for closing seems like a long time! It never occurred to me to visit Georgia, although I've always wanted to visit Charleston, SC.

Will you be seeing relatives during your travels? I sometimes like that but usually do not.

Congrats, that was fast! I think you're making a sound decision in postponing the next phase. Once the house is done, escape and figure it out! Hopefully that means more travel and fun!

In this market, that was fast! I'm glad you have a chance to get away before having to pack. I just cleaned out my attic and boy, did I have a lot of junk squirreled away up there. I hope you've done a good job of weeding out over the years. If not, you better rent a dumpster.

Karen, I'll send you an email the plan is to be there sometime between 25th of March and the first week of April.

Cathy, given the move and all that we aren't going to get as far as Florida this trip :( but we'll be there next winter for at least a month !

Janet, we will be at the cottage July and August and would love to have the three of you visit there.

Teresa, let me look at the map, if we are within striking distance you are on for lunch!

Actually I thought 7 weeks was one heck of a long time. We had so many showings, over 60, I was starting to think it would never sell. Our property is lovely and the house is too but the layout is not "typical" and was off putting to many who wanted a more traditional layout. That and the fact we have a crap box of a house across the street, seriously neglected property in a very nice neighborhood were playing against us.

Anyhow the right people saw it and loved it and are thrilled with it.

Now it's all about moving.....ugh!

That's exactly what my mom did. Put it all in storage. And took it out at her own pace. We have PODS here, so the storage sat where she wanted until she was ready and then they brought it to her (she actually had two. One for immediate need and she knew she'd keep it all and the other was for, "I haven't decided" or it needs to go in the attic). Can you do that? My mom is easily (more and worse than most of us) overwhelmed and this helped her massively to know she could do it a little at a time.

Road trip. Hm. Gerogia? That wouldn't be April 30-31 would it? I WISH!

Rob, that's exactly what we are doing. We're having a pod delivered and my goal is to only move things into it that are keepers. Lofty goal!

No we'll be in that area the very end of March or early the first week of April : (

Well, I didn't want to see you either. Harumph! Totally kidding, but I will miss you.

I have to say I used the POD system too because I could pack at my own pace, by myself. I didn't want to inconvenience any family members as they'd just helped out during the catastrophic flood that caused me to have to move. That was good too, because I'd say, you know I really don't feel like packing. And bargain with myself, well maybe just one box today. Or I could do it all day long on a weekend day, all over the span of a month. It really made my life so much easier.

You'll make it through and this will be a great adventure.

I wanted to add my congratulations too, but was having trouble logging in. Seven weeks is not a long time at all. We had a house for sale for 22 months once, with five offers that never quite went through until the end. Now THAT was a long time.

Now the fun begins! I'll look forward to hearing about your adventures.

How exciting!! A turning point! I'm very excited for you!

Make sure you're not hitting any of the typical spring break spots on your trip! It's about that time of year! College spring breaks down there are different times than public schools...but it's roughly around that time frame.

Having gone to the University of Georgia, then working in Atlanta for many years...I know the Georgia-to the Carolinas path pretty well!!! Depending on my age at the time, I knew when to be where, hahaha!!

There are so many lovely, lovey places. You will have a wonderful trip!

WOW! That was fast Sharon. Sounds like you and himself have a plan. A great one at that. I'm sure the packing and down sizing for a future condo will be hard though. Hope you find one with a decent kitchen when the time comes. Enjoy your travels....be sure and check in with a pic or two pal.
