Phoenix restaurant?

Hey gang,

DH is going to Phoenix next month for an annual convention and he needs to plan a dinner for attendees from our state. There will probably be about 20-30 hungry people - including some college students. They'll be staying downtown at the convention center, so we need some recommendations of a restaurant within easy reach. Does anyone know of a local joint that serves good food and isn't terribly expensive -- as so many downtown convention restaurants tend to be?

If you want to go look at some benghalensis, you should go to the zoo. They have several trees and several variations. There are also other types of ficus all over the place. The biggest one that I have seen in the valley is in the lakes neighborhood south of baseline between Rural and McKlintock. It hangs over an ally that runs along houses that are on the south side of the southern most lakes on the west side of the development. It is REALLY big. I asked a guy that lives by it about it. He thought it was a magnolia and said that rumor has it that one of the original tenants of an apartment complex on the other side of the fence planted it when the area was developed. There are quite a few unusual ficus in that neighborhood. There are also some benghalensis that Scottsdale planted near the Osborn hospital. I'm not sure, but I think that the beautiful ficus planted in front of the Vine restaurant in Tempe on Apache may be a rubiginosa (if not, perhaps a macrophylla?) I always though it was just another elastica until a got a closer look. GREAT TRUNK! Looks twisted and knarly. CL resume - ever use this area?

If you are sending resumes to any kind of design firm, make sure it is graphically pleasing. I have gotten every job I've ever applied for and the first thing they tell me in the interview when they pull out the resume to refresh themselves on who I am is "oh yeah, your resume is beautiful, it went right to the top" or something similar. Architects are all about every stupid little piece of whatever being graphically pleasing. The other thing I have done (and remember, this is for the design business specifically) is that I outline selected projects for each of my last 3 jobs - with the most detail on the most recent job and less detail and shorter sentences entries as you go on. Right now your resume reads a bit like a job description. It's sort of understood that you need to be able to do those things. Pick a few of your better projects and talk a little bit about what you really did. Pick the sexier projects and don't be afraid to name-drop clients (this is for paper resumes, I would NOT do that on CL - too many crazies out there). For example two jobs ago I spent a lot of time designing a major renovation of a rooftop addition on a landmark hotel. I talked about what I specifically did (in a brief way) on that project... not just "schematic design" but "developed 5 different schemes and presented to the owner in hong kong". You didn't do detailing, you "detailed both steel and wood frame buildings" or you "detailed high end custom casework" (a surprising number of people do NOT know how to properly detail casework). You want to make your experience sound exciting and thorough so they want to have you on their team, and if you had good clients (commercial I mean) it is something great to talk about in an interview. For the CL ad, I would do two separate ads - one targeting design firms and one targeting private ID clients. I would keep it short and sweet and direct people to a real resume. CL scares me though. Barnmom - -Thanks, that would be wonderful! The natives always know the best spots.

Trixie and Jess -- I had checked TripAdvisor (totally didn't think about Chowhound!) but sometimes it's hard to get a good feel. And, I'd take someone's recommendation here far more seriously than some nameless strangers. LOL

Annie -- I'm not going this time around, but I have in the past. I think that it's in Orlando next year, so I'm going to seriously consider going. Although, the daughter is getting married in early April of next year, so I'll probably be too exhausted and/or too broke!

Speaking of meetings...my husband does have another meeting scheduled next month -- in Big Rapids at Ferris -- and I usually tag along for that one. I know some of you are from that part of the state and if anyone is up for a visit or some lunch, I'd love to meet you. I'll even bring along a little iVillage swag. I'm a fun person and I promise I don't bite (much)! ;)

Wow, Tamara, Big Rapids? At Ferris? I'd love to meet you, I'm 30 miles from there and that's where Ashley attends college. I went to high school in Big Rapids and the farm is only 5 miles away.

Oh yeah, I'd LOVE to meet you!!!

Tamara, here are a few places I can think of offhand. It has been about 8 years since I lived in Phoenix and worked in the Central Corridor, so I am not sure what is still there. You could probably look these restaurants up on the Internet to see if it is anything you are interested in.
I think the group would be able to ride the Metro Light Rail to these places, too. A good thing to know is numbered streets west of Central are avenues and any numbered street east of Central are streets, not avenues!

My favorite in Pheonix is a Thai restaurant. It's inexpensive but I'm guessing not everyone would be on board with Thai.

WOW, that would be a first -- CF member meets iVillage.
I guess it's only fitting that it would be Annie.

Cathy, I only hope that it's ME! I'd love to meet Tamara, and anyone else. Elery says he's never met one of my "imaginary friends" that he didn't like and neither have I!
