Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! Being that I'm hand screened every time I fly I would agree a lot of the screening process is nonsense. Steps that are SOOOO important at one airport are completely skipped at another. Some level of screening is useful to prevent weapons, etc. from going on planes but taking your shoes off and putting your liquids in a baggie is NOT preventing terrorists from getting on planes with explosives. It's a waste of time and money. In my opinion one reason we're being subjected to being searched without cause and the like is because we're far too politically correct in how we are defending this country against terrorism. The "rights" of the enemy are so important we're rendered completely ineffective in fighting the terrorist enemy. We follow the old rules of war when the war has changed entirely. We give non-citizen suspected terrorists the rights of citizens instead of handling them like they were suspected war criminals. We pussyfoot around everyone for fear of offending somebody because of their ethnicity, religion or country of origin. Meanwhile terrorists have to be laughing their butts off because they have us completely figured out and we are clueless and powerless. We're running around like a chicken with its head cutoff spending money on ineffective security measures and ever more eroding our freedoms. I think the enemy is winning big time and most people don't even recognize it.

Being the mother of a DD that was a difficult child, I am going to agree with Paula. Don't assume that because you spend a few hours of your life with a child whose behavior is less than stellar, that it stems from poor parenting. I'm sure that everyone here has crossed paths with a BRAT sometime in their lives. But every child that has a bad day is not a brat. Who can expect a child to sit still for hours on end, with or without activities to do? 2 of my 3 MIGHT have appeared to me to be pleasant to travel with. DD, not so much. Would you really not expect me to take her shopping, to not travel, to not go to the park or attend a ball game just because she might be whiny and difficult? Because I can guarantee you that during one of those 4 activities we would not have had an easy time. Those of you that have flown with your children... are you absolutely certain that your children stood up to the test of not being an annoyance to your traveling companions? Oh come on! A child -can not- help but to be bumping the seat in front of them. Or to talk non stop. To have to go to the potty every 30 minutes. Or wanting something to eat or drink every little while. And whine when mom is quietly trying to get them to sit still and be quiet. Children are part of society. On the other hand.... I was putting groceries in my car the other day and heard a screaming woman from clear across the other side of the parking lot yelling at her child to get his a** in the car. She screamed at the kid the entire time I was putting the groceries in the car. It made me so sad but I"m not willing to give her the benefit of the doubt that she was just having a bad day. Bad day or not, what kind of adult acts like that? What kind of adult will that child grow up to be? So sad. That woman is a part of society.

I have never heard or read, here or elsewhere this topic has been discussed, anybody acting like touching an obese person is gross (like sharing an armrest). Does anybody think it's catching? Sharing an arm rest is fine. Not being able to use the arm rest at all because the person next to you is using the whole thing, is a different matter. I totally agree that one of the main problems is the seating widths and leg space on planes. They are not designed for most people and certainly not for comfort. A few months or a year back, I read an article about the Washington State Ferry System and how they were in the process of changing their passenger occupancy limits due to the fact that people are much bigger now than when the ferries were built and, thus, capacity needs to be reduced. I think planes have done the opposite and are cramming more people in. More people fly these days because flights are cheaper. if you compare fares to income, flying is much more affordable today than it was 40-50 years ago. The reduced fares are, in part, due to more seats being squeezed into the plane. The more flyers, the lower the cost. To be honest, I love to fly in spite of all of this because flights take me to fun and interesting places. I usually find myself falling asleep on planes because I have so much to do to get ready to go that I'm usually exhausted by the time I board and I want to rest up so I can hit the ground running and then, when I'm on my way back, I'm exhausted from playing and exploring. I guess, as a society, we need to ask ourselves if we're willing to pay more for larger seats and more leg room or if we want the deals so we can travel more. When it comes down to it, for me, I'll take the deals.

That was a good one! LOL. I use to have fun guessing what the food was when flying. Kind of miss that fun now that they don't serve food any more.

Clare I also miss the Iberia Spanish Airline food. Theirs was the best! There was great food with a pre meal drink and then as much wine as you wanted with dinner. They would come around again and again with fresh bread rolls and pots of coffee when you had nearly finished eating your tenderloin steak in gravy.

Now they offer dry sandwiches and a thimbleful of coffee and you have to pay high prices for them.

I flew no frills Allegiant Air last week...no surprises, no food! LOL! No really you could buy boxed snacks and beverages....I needed a "beverage"...but 9 AM is too early for Scotch!

The best food I had was on Canadian Pacific (they served great filet Mignon), and the second best was Air France, where I had Crab Louis. My best friend in Mexico City said that SwissAir had the best food (and sterling silver flatware), but I also had real silverware on CP, and for that matter on the Santa Fe train, when I used to take it between Houston and Temple when I was at Rice. My favorite meals were on trains.

In the 1990s I used to ask for Kosher meals when I would fly so that I could get lactose free food. I also used to ask the airlines what color scheme was used in the decoration of the airplane interiors, so that I would not wear something that would clash. Unfortunately, they were unable to furnish me with this information and I sometimes had to be embarrassed - mostly notably when I flew Alaskan Airlines, which had horrible brown interiors with hideous brown upholstery. I happened to be wearing turquoise linen pants, a magenta shirt, and purple shoes on that flight between Seattle and San Francisco. After that, I stopped flying into or out of Seattle and only flew to Vancouver when visiting the northwest. That was in the 1980s, however.

Well, I think I'm officially happy that I've never been offered any food at all on an airline! I did get a bag of peanuts on Southwest Airlines when Elery and I flew from Detroit to Dallas, as well as two drinks. Nothing on the American Airlines flight from Detroit to California, not even a free drink, although they did sell extremely overpriced snacks like cookies and chips and the world's worst coffee.

As much as I could relate to that I just didn't find it that funny. I suppose in a dry-humor british way it was a bit amusing though.

The funnier thing was Lars dressing to accentuate the decor of the airline cabin! Now THAT is funny!

I do remember good food on the airlines. I remember mimosa's as you board...I remember prime rib sliced and served table side. I even remember a flambeua dessert served...not sure how flames were okay...but I guess it was a simpler (albeit stupider? time!).

When I was younger and in the travel business I would often fly places just to eat. I was pretty poor, didn't make a lot of money..but I had free airline passes and would often go places just to eat good on the plane. Upon arrival I had free hotels and with a few bucks could travel for less than I could stay and eat at home. Those were the days!

Shaun, that's okay.....it don't matter...everything is okie-do-kee....no worries...I don't take anything too seriously...life is too short. I just thought maybe you took exception to my comment about Lars. No worries....I love all of the personalities and comments and nothing gets me upset. Why should it? I love all of the great people on this forum. I woulnd't stick around otherwise.

I think back with some degree of nostalgia on the "plane trip from hell"...Chicago -> Newark -> Bimingham -> Athens -> Nairobi.
We ate every 3 hours...dinner with wine and breakfast 3 hours later, then tea and biscuits and lunch and tea and dinner and breakfast....
The food was lovely with fresh bread rolls and fruit and champagne and who knows what....but stop already and let me sleep!!
That was about 15 years ago.....things are very different now. I used to get a sandwich served to me between Des Moines and Kansas city...about a 40 minute flight!
