Need info on South Bend/Elkhart Indiana!!

Just found out this morning that my DD#1 and SIL will be moving there later in the year.

Tell me EVERYTHING I...er.... SHE needs to know!! :)

I've already figured out it's only a few miles from Shipshewana....that's important to a future visiting/quilting MOM!!

Vabyvlue, I had thought someone would have asked for more details before now, but maybe everybody thought I made it all up! I live in Terre Haute, so, a little bit more south than you are, but we did hit 15 below twice this winter. Marechal Niel is in a pot in a small greenhouse that stays at 50 degrees. However, I've had my greenhouse for 8 years and I've had the plant for 20 years. It's an own-root plant from Sequoia Nursery, from Ralph Moore's supplemental list that used to have so many neat varieties on it. The plant was always small and twiggy. I never pruned it, just moved it to a larger pot as needed. MN produced its flowers on 1" twigs, but I didn't care. The fragrance from one bloom was amazing and I could detect it from many yards away ( in a still corner of the yard). In the winter, I buried it a foot deep and dug it up in the spring. I kept it that way for a number of years and it stayed about a foot high, maximum. I think the key was minimal fertilizer in the fall so the wood could harden. I only ever cut off dead wood. Once we moved and I got my greenhouse, I sat MN on the floor in the corner and it rooted in the ground through the holes in the pot. It's still that way. It is never sprayed and probably gets up to 100 degrees on many days in the summer. I pour some Miracle Gro on it once in a while and it's still doing well so far. Blooms a lot in spring and some during summer. BTW - I did grow Rosette Delizy and Lady Hillingdon in the ground, also. Both were HEAVILY mulched each fall and then still dead to the ground every spring, but they did each give me some bloom by the end of the season. I was thrilled with even one bloom since I had never seen either in person. Hope that answers your question. Hi Julia, I am from Carmel/Westfield and started with two hives myself this spring. I ordered my bees from Garland Crist in Alexandria, north of Anderson. I have been VERY satisfied. Garland sold me two nucs, each with four frames for $60 per nuc, and the two hives have been going gangbuster since. I got my bees on May 22nd, and two weeks ago added my first super on both of them on top of two deep hive bodies. Totally amazing. Anyways, I can recommend him from my experience. Let me know if you can't find his address. BTW, I think you don't have to wait until next spring to start. I believe it's still early enough in the year to start, but Garland could advise you better than I can. Good luck!

Hey - you should've been there! This was one of the best Gourd Shows I have been to. Lots of great classes, the new location was superb, lots of wonderful vendors and the gourd competitions were amazing! Have to brag tho that Michigan gourd artists took home over 60 ribbons! Awesome gourds! If you get a chance to get to a gourd show in your area take the time to travel and enjoy yourselves! Truth is, I've got a sufficient supply of seeds already harvested and the loss now will be just tomatoes for eating, drying or freezing; so, no big deal really. Just the mess will all have to be cleaned up during hot weather rather than when I usually wait to do it when it cools off in the Fall. **** Now there's the good new says Carolyn who has had ONE ripe Sungold F1 to date, only a few of the plants have tiny tomatoes, most have just blossoms and some have NO blossoms as of Wed AM when Freda looked at them for me, and first killing frost here can be as early as the first week in September but most commonly mid to late September. I have a few, didn't count them , Mt Magic F1's left, just FYI, and there are four more Randy varieties with the same LB genes bred in that might be available in a few years. I'm trialing four of them but had him send all the seeds to Craig, b'c he raised all my plants for me this year so I don't know how many seeds he sent but I don't think that many. Randy knows Craig and Craig has gotten Randy interested in the Dwarfs. I'm sure Keith is probably growing the same four as is Mark who has developed a wonderful cooperative effort with Randy so I thank you for mentioning Mark when that Septoria thing came up. The two of them have many friends in common after I hooked them up, so to speak. Carolyn, who forgot she has two NOT Rostova's, aka SRH's just sent to her that are lovely red hearts, definitiely not Rostova, and will cut them up to taste today. it looks like a variety, obviously unknown, that might need to be adopted under orphan status. ( smile)

Well, I can tell you that it's only one state below me, so that's fun, and only about 125 miles from Elery's house! Also less than 100 miles from Chicago, and that has everything anyone could possibly want, I think, except sunshine in February, LOL

The climate is going to be very much like mine, with a lot of Lake effect snow. It's very close to Lake Michigan.

University of Notre Dame is there and so there are a lot of things that you'd find in larger cities, like music and museums, but with a much smaller town "feel". Much of the city is very university oriented, catering to the college students and/or families.

You won't have to drive very far out of the city to find farmer's markets, farms, the infamous flea market, Amish communities, etc.

I don't suppose you care that Oliver plows were manufactured there....(grin)

Of course I care that Oliver tractors were manufactured there!! MORE importantly though. Just how far is it from YOU???

I hope she plans well and doesn't decide to have my first grandchild in the dead of winter because I've already told her, "No matter where you live, I'm gonna be camped on your couch when the time comes!" I'll have to be sure to mention that... :-)

Good to know there's plenty of farmer's markets nearby. She's becoming more interested as she has the freedom to choose and can afford it. I'm sure they'll end up buying a place with enough room for a garden, but I'm hoping to get in a crash course in canning THIS summer! I thought I'd have more than one year of her living close enough AND being interested!

Not tractors, plows. (grin) The last Oliver tractor was made in 1975 or 1976, maybe in Iowa? They're collectors items now.

As for how close to me, well, Elery IS married to me, so I can be 125 miles away. From the farm, though? About 175 miles, not much further, but I'm north and he's east. A lot closer than that to Sherry (sheshebop) too, and there's a lovely drive right up the Lakeshore on 31, it would take her right to blueberry country and the pick your own places, lots of peach orchards, sweet corn everywhere. Oh yeah, lots of farmer's markets, she'll love it. So will you.

Saugatuck is a lovely little art colony, Holland is interesting and has a tulip festival complete with klompen dancing in wooden shoes. Grand Haven has the Coast Guard festival and a working draw bridge for the boats.

And, if she needs anything, I'm not far away, tell her to not even hesitate to call me and don't you DARE come that close without giving me the chance to meet you!

So she is expecting or are you only expecting her to be expecting? (grin)

No way I'd get that close and not call you!

I think they won't actually be moving until the first part of 2013. She said after Christmas. I don't have a lot of details yet, neither do they.

Plenty of time to plan!
