P/U....partial unemployment??

Its very distressing to me that after 22 years with the company, I am being forced to work just 20 hours per week...no OT....just 20.

I only qualify for the 20 hours because I gave unlimited availabilty. If I were to ask for a day off it would come out of the 20 I "would have been scheduled.

I know its the economy, I get it.

I was told I should apply for patial unemployment.

I was just wondering how that works and if it would be for me??

Last year at this time I was working at least 30-34 hours per week and we were doing ok...now the cut is starting to hurt us.

I am pretty bummed about this whole thing but the bosses keep saying its going to get better but finacially I don't know how much longer I can hang in there.

Grrrr!!!

On a serious note, I'm sorry for the p/u pita situation - what a bummer, hope it changes.

What has truly surprised me this Spring, was how VERY LITTLE prices had increased on plants and supplies. . . many of my suppliers actually held their prices at last year's level, while others made only nominal increases. . . perhaps this year (at least), their fear of losing a lot of business (since gardens don't usually rank right up there with food/transportation/utilities, etc. as essential) might have prompted them to bite into their profit margins. . .but how long can they do that? Of course, like many of you, if push came to shove, I'd stop driving my car, turn off all the lights and eat one meal a day - just so I could have a garden ! Carl

Thanks you so much Bgrose, Carol, and Jim! Carol, Folklore is always supposed to be a bicolor but the camera fails to capture it because I don't take it under the optimum lighting. It is a brilliant candy-tangerine orange on one side and a lemon butter cream on the other side. It looks nothing like Disneyland. Disneyland is very floribunda-like but Folklore does consistently "spiral" and is a classic HT. Bgrose, yes, Lincoln is my favorite rose! but the next one in line will almost 98% be Ferdinand Pichard. Both roses have the most AMAZING FRAGRANCE!!! Great news people, Crescendo's color is deepening, and may revert to Gemini coral. I am so excited about this... But if I post new pics that would be breaking my promise about saving everything for the next Lumpy batter batch, haha! Which is another reason why I stopped myself from posting my photos of my Scottish heath and heather. I absolutely love those new plants but we will see if they can flourish in my soil which is very ill-suited for heather/heath...They need sandy and acidic and not clay.alkaline soil so I'm trying to feed them tea leaves for the acid... lol, Jim, I am having a ROTTEN DAY TODAY, lol, today of all days, and yes! I did try to clean out that mailbox, lol! Hope you got my email about how horrid of a day I'm having with Kansas IRS. They are refusing to send back the money they made a mistake on back in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Their error too! Missouri got it straight, but Kansas didn't!!! So frustrated!!!!

"This is the time we should spend money to help our economy if we possibly can. That's why recently I've gone into my savings and done a few long-wanted improvements around here." Especially if you spend the money to HIRE PEOPLE instead of just buying more stuff (especially imported stuff from the TJMaxxes and Targets people race to when they don't have much cash). Put people to work! That was part of our big outside project last year - DH had gotten a bonus at work, and we got a good tax refund, and we felt like we could afford to dip into our savings a little bit, so we dumped a chunk of our cash into the pockets of local workers. If you can afford to do so, it's even more important to do so now since things are worse now for a LOT of people than they were last year. This year, though... no decorating and some of the "socks and underwear projects" (phrase stolen from the Old House Forum, meaning the necessary and boring stuff that no one is really going to see but that just has to be done) will be put off for another year. No bonus this year, very little tax refund, have been helping support family members in worse shape, we're taking a really hard hit on the medical-bills front this year and have just discovered that DH's car is highly unlikely to last to autumn which means coming up with a down payment and rearranging the budget to fit in car payments. Although DH works for an extremely stable company and we know his job is safe (in fact they're finally hiring another person for his department) I won't risk the savings we have left for anything as, well, downright petty as decorating. It's been months since I've looked at eBay or Craigslist, and I used to be a major addict! Ah well, I just decorate in my head.

if he's dehydrated, you can take a syringe (or a turkey baster? don't fill all the way) without the needle & slowly give him water with it. You can do this several times a day. Or give him wet food. We take wet food & make 'soup' for our cats. Put half a can of wet food in bowl, add hot water, mush it around. The 'gravy' canned foods work best for it. They love it & it ups their water intake. If you lightly pinch up the skin on his neck & it stays up when you let go, he's dehydrated & needs more water. Good luck, it's hard when they're sick esp. when funds are limited. If it gets worse & you have to see the vet, tell them funds are limited & you need to be conservative on tests etc. If you have a good vet, they will work with you. Sorry to hear it's hit you, too Susie!

I have been cut from 30-35 hours a week to 8 so I feel your pain.

Had an interview today that I think went well....am keeping my fingers crossed.

I hope you can hold out until it gets better. I have never heard of "partial unemployment". Let us know how that works if you look into it.

Keep your chin up! Can you find a part-time job to hold you over until things turn around?

Susie, sorry to hear about this. I can tell you how it usually works, but in your case it might be different because you are a New Jersey resident working in PA.
You register on the PA unemployment website. If you qualify, then every two weeks you submit a form saying how many hours you worked in that period. Of course all this has to be verified with your employer. You get different amounts of Unemployment Compensation for each time period depending on how many hours you worked. Up to whatever the maximum is.

Susie - can you get a Union Rep to help you with this? As I recall, Acme is a union store unline many of the other grocery stores in the area......

My hours have been cut, too, and someone suggested filing for unemployment due to cut hours, but I haven't yet. I never know when my full time hours will be reinstated. In my like of work, it's very weather related. In just a few weeks, it'll be hopping again...I hope. So, I'm afraid by the time I filed and get through all the red tape, I'll be back to full time. Well, afraid is not a good word, but I just wonder if it's worth it for just a few more weeks.

Susie and Linda, I'm sorry you're going through this. I recently heard or red the new acronym...ITE.. In This Economy. Well, ITE really bITEs!

I had a co-worker who worked full time -- 40 hours a week. The employer cut her back to three days a week. She was able to claim unemployment for the two days she lost.

She had a salaried position, so if you are paid hourly, I'm not sure how that would work.

I agree with Alexa -- go to the union. When I worked for the Free Library of Philadelphia, most of the workers were city workers and therfore unionized. I was astounded at the clout held by the union.

CC -- you wouldn't have believed it. Short of coming to work and murdering people, city workers could not lose their jobs. I will say that most of the people at FLP were good and dedicated workers, but there were some bad apples who took advantage of every chance to goof off.

I worked for the Foundation, so I didn;t belong to a union.

Sigh...there is nothing the union can do as this was part of the contract we signed last summer.
All employees will be guarenteed 20 hours so long as they give unlimited availabilty.

Some weeks I get more...either they call me in early or ask me to stay late. However its nothing I can count on.

I have applied for a few part time jobs but so far nada.

Oh and I did not like to offer the company made to us in regard to the contract...I thought it $ucked out loud!!
I knew this would happen so I voted against it.....the vote was something like 4078-40 in favor-it was a very sad sad day.
