Storms Over Canarias

We've been having terrible flooding and rain here in the Canary Islands. This video shows how it was in Santa Cruz, the capital city of Tenerife.

Luckily we didn't have it as bad where we live, on the other side of the island, and our house and garden are safe.

I wrote about it on my Tenerife blog, where there are links to more photos in the British newspapers.

It's raining again today so I imagine there will still be more flooding.

Eww! What a mess....I'm sorry....
In the past several years we have had well more than our share of floods in the midwest....so I sure know what damage water can do. and it seems we are likly looking at a dangerous spring and early summer due to all the snow that will have to find a way to the sea.

Oh Sharon, that is indeed a mess. WE had some flooding here too, and they are still repairing roads and bridges from last year, it takes a long time to clean up all the mess.

I hope it gets better there soon.

Hey Lisa, Those cuttings look okay. Don't worry about the leaves wilting. It's all about the stem at this point. Trim the bottom up to a node and remove leaves so that the plant concentrates on roots. Don't cut the mother "way" back. Be sure to leave the Y area at the top. Some of this is hit and miss, but like you say "But hey its worth a try! " Take your time. You have another few weeks (in your zone) to figure out what you think is best. All 3 of those first ones look really good for having gone through a storm that tore up the rest of your blooms. WILD HORSES is already on my list, and I remember having seen and liked TYROLEAN TREASURE before. I think this is the first time I've seen PURPLE EYED DRAGONFLY, but it is lovely. As for the rest of them, SPARTICUS ADORNED and MAGNIFICENT RAINBOW caught my eye, and your photo of the group of INCA PRINCE is really stunning. Casey

Adellabedella, I love mammatus clouds and think they are the coolest-looking thing. We see them a lot down here along the Red River on severe T-storm type days. If I am in the garden and see them magically 'appearing' in the sky, I drop what I am doing and flip my fire radio over to the NOAA weather channel to listen to it for a while. If I see rapid T-storm development off to our west, south or southwest plus mammatus clouds, I go inside to check the NWS website and the radar. When you watch the weather closely, you soon learn which clouds are a cause for concern and which are not. Sometimes my storm spotter DH comes outside looks at the clouds and tries to drag my inside the house or at least voices his concern that I "should" come inside. Carol, I am sure they got all that rain. I watched their storms on radar all night long. After I attempted to go to sleep, the weather radio went off every 15 minutes for one of the storms out west. All I could think of was that I'd surely be celebrating the great rainfall if I lived there! They've been so dry for so long. And, no, our weather radio isn't set for that county because it is so far west, but it is set for counties closer to it, like Montague County in TX, and Jefferson, Carter and Garvin Counties in OK. A lot of the storms that were hitting Cotton County were eventually brushing parts of the counties we do have programmed into the radio, so the thing kept going off. I didn't sleep much and was tempted to turn the darn thing off but would never do that for safety reasons, of course. George, I'm glad you got rain. Y'all sure did need it. Do plexiglass storms cloud or discolor over time?

Gordon, Plexiglass is an acrylic plastic. Plastics yellow when exposed to ultraviolet light unless protected by using a UV inhibitor in the manufactue of the product, however not all acrylics contain UV protection. You can't tell just from looking at it, you need information from the manufacturer. Even with protection, plastics may evntually visually degrade when exposed to weathering because they scrath easier than glass and even simple cleaning may eventually cause the material to become hazy due to scratches from windborne sand and dust as well as cleaning them. Personally, I would use glass.

Wow, looks dangerous too! I guess your little bit of paradise has its own brand of trouble just like other parts of the world. We've been dealing with snow and ice here which can be hazardous, but not on par with major flooding and devastation. I'm glad to know you and hubby are safe, Sharon.

A mess indeed! It looks like the asphalt is being washed away. I am glad your side is much safer. Stay dry. How do your outside kitties do when it's so wet?

Thanks all...yes there is a mess over on the other side of the island calculated at around $12 million damage so far, not to mention repairing private businesses and roads that were torn up by the water.

Eileen the outside kitty (Tigger) goes into the carport and either sleeps on top of my car or in towel-lined hutches that I made from clothes hampers laid on their sides and leave around the garden under shelter. He has a fur coat now so thick that he looks like a bear, so I imagine he doesn't get cold.
I've invited him into the house but he's a real outdoor man and doesn't like the indoors. LOL.

It's clear this morning but very cold. I bet there's snow on the mountain.
