yeah, well, I fell off ONE step, going outside to play with Cooper, he was excited and bumped me just enough to fall off the step. I put out my left arm to catch myself.

It's not really that bad, I haven't taken any of the pain meds they gave me, and I have an appointment with the ortho guy tomorrow. the guy who fixed my knee.

I broke the radial head of the left elbow joint, and the ulna bone right below the elbow joint. The emergency room doc said damage was "pretty minimal" so we'll see what the doc thinks tomorrow....

Oh No, glad to hear that the pain is minimal! I hope that the Ortho doc says it will be an easy fix! I cannot count how many times I nearly tripped over our dogs-- but I was younger then and lucky that no real damage ocurred!

Annie - I fell forward a couple years ago, put my arms out in front of me to catch me, and broke both elbows. Two years later, I fell and broke only one of them. Had two different orthopods and the treatment was different each time. Be sure to do what they recommend. I've found the elbow breaks, while treated as sort of "minimal" compression type fractures, can cause problems on down the road. Your days of push-ups in the gym may be over for a while. lol

Annie, doesn't sound "mimimal" to me. Glad that you aren't in much pain. Hope you don't require surgery.

Annie..since it's in a splint, can you take it off to wash? Gigi is in a boot and has been for about 2 months. One more month...stress fracture...meant the end of her track season. Maybe she'll be cleared for spring track, though I doubt it.

I feel your pain - a broken elbow can hurt quite a bit, and as Ann T said, it does not sound minor. As for getting you out of shoveling snow - that might end up being a different matter! I broke my left arm when I was at UT Austin (I was 36 at the time), and I had locked myself out of my apartment. I think Kevin was with me, and we had been at a disco that evening and I was a bit tipsy, but still felt that I could climb up to my second story window to get in. Well, instead of getting in, I fell and landed on my arm, but I'm not sure where it was broken, but I think it was my wrist. Anyway, the university health center put a waterproof cast on it, and I took a swimming class in spite of the cast. People kept a distance from me in the pool, however, and I also stayed in my weight lifting class.

The good thing about casts is that you can decorate them, and I had two separate casts. The second one I decorated with a checkerboard pattern of fluorescent paint with black, yellow, magenta, and turquoise squares. Of course that meant that I had to wear outfits that were in those colors, but since it was the 1980s, I had plenty of choices. I got quite a bit of attention because of the ways I coordinated my outfits with my cast. I mention this so that you can start considering how you want to use your own cast as a fashion accessory.

As others said, Ouch! The thing about falling is it's so frustrating. I've fallen a couple of times lately, with nothing hurt but my pride.

Well, I THINK it's going well. The ortho guy made me keep the splint, but he said I could take it off to shower and do range of motion exercises, and he's not going to give me a full cast at all, that makes me happy.

However, he also said that elbows were notorious for not healing correctly, so I'm not to push, pull or lift anything before my next appointment in two weeks, then we'll see how everything goes.

Of course, Madi and Ashley were here last night and I spent all night lifting Madi and playing with her, but I didn't tell the doc that and I guess I won't do it again for at least two weeks!

I'm glad you don't have a cast. I broke my leg in 3 places (sliding into base) and had a cast from toes to mid-thigh. My boss's main concern was about the hair that must be growing. I saved some hair from my hair cut, arranged it so it was sticking out of the toe of my cast, walked into his office and said "I guess you were right about the hair getting long on my leg".

OMG, Cathy, that is too funny!

Ugh! Sorry about your arm. Please take the doc's advice and baby your arm for awhile. A badly healed fracture can lead to chronic pain from inflammation down the road. Take it easy woman!

And here's a recipe for you that you can make with one arm!!

Broken Arm Breakfast Casserole with Cottage Cheese, Bacon, Feta, and Green Onions
(Makes 4 servings; recipe created by Kalyn when she had a broken arm but needed a good Phase One breakfast.)

Ingredients:
4 strips bacon or turkey bacon
1 cup low-fat cottage cheese, rinsed and drained
3 oz. (1/3 cup) crumbled Feta
1/3 cup sliced green onions
Spike Seasoning to taste (or use other all purpose seasoning mix)
fresh ground black pepper to taste
8 eggs, well beaten

Instructions:
Preheat oven or toaster oven to 375F/190C. Spray a very small (9"x7" or 8"x8") glass casserole dish with nonstick spray.

Cook bacon in the microwave until it's very crisp and blot away the fat with paper towels, then crumble. Drain the cottage cheese into a fine-mesh colander, spray with cold water until the creamy part washes away and only the curds remain, and let drain. Crumble the feta, slice the green onions, and beat the eggs.

Combine the crumbled bacon, cottage cheese, Feta, and green onions in the casserole dish. Season the ingredients with Spike Seasoning and pepper, pour over the beaten eggs, and gently stir so all ingredients are combined.

Bake 30-35 minutes, or until the mixture is firm and starting to slightly brown on top. (It will puff a bit while it cooks and then settle back down as it cools. Serve hot. This keeps well in the fridge and can be reheated in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.

I would call that recipe a "crustless quiche", and I would not bother rinsing the cottage cheese - the recipe seems a bit on the dry side as it is. I would probably want to add some lightly sauteed spinach to it.

That reminds me, I have two pie crusts in the freezer, and I need to defrost one if I want to make a quiche this week-end. I would have defrosted one last week-end, but I couldn't find them.

Yes, Elery is here and doing some of the cooking.

However, the girls are coming for dinner tomorrow, so we're having a rolled pork loin stuffed with apples and bacon, some scalloped potatoes and a lemon mousse cake with the last of Arlene's Meyer lemons. Oh, and I have to get off the computer and go bake some bread, thank goodness for that Zoji bread machine!

Oh, it's too bad, though, how I can't wash dishes well with one hand, or scrub those pots. (grin)

Right now there's not a lot to be done on the farm, there's too much snow to fix fence and those big round bales get moved with a tractor. My nephew lives there and fills the water tank and gathers eggs, minor maintenance stuff. So, I guess it's a good time to be laid up.....
