A loss of a mother

A fellow member of my daylily club lost his mother last night

All I would ask is that you would send prayers for my friend Mark. Jewell was a very special lady to us. She will be greatly missed by us.

DLD, I'm really sorry to hear of the loss of a close friend. Was it unexpected? Not that it matters, you still have that emptiness in your heart.

Having just lost my mother, I can totally feel for her. Thanksgiving is hard for me anyway, with no family around. I purposely went on a fast this year right before so I didn't have to participate. T'day without my mom would be unbearable.

I'm so sorry. It never is easy to lose your mother, & you're very young to go through it. There's a quote at the top of this page that says something about grief taking time & attempting to soothe it too soon only irritates. & loss isn't like a cake mix; you can't put it into the right temperature & take it out when the timer pings & call it done. It takes different times, &, truly, it never is really over. You don't get over it; you accept it. which is good; you don't *want* to "get over" your mother. Your grief reflects your love. About those "it'll be okay/it'll get better" condolences: I think sometimes people/I/we say brainless or idiotic things because we aren't comfortable saying nothing or saying "I'm sorry" & then shutting our mouths; we need to put a label or limit on things, to put them in a box & shut the lid. As summerblue suggested, human contact is helpful, as are a knowledge that you are needed, that somebody is depending on you, waiting for you (you could deliver meals on wheels or record an elder's stories for his/her biography, etc), aerobic exercise that pumps oxygenated blood to the brain & therefore to your mood, & keeping busy; if you have a spare moment, don't use it to reflect on anything right now; use it to get something done, & set yourself a busy-but-not-overwhelming schedule. The licensing is very strict. If the person who applied this was a family member who is not a licensed applicator, then you have to wonder how they got their hands on this stuff. I know that with these aluminum phosphide pellets you cannot even use them within a certain distance of a house. Maybe 100'. I don't remember. This chemical is used more freely in some countries than it is here, with deaths sometimes being the tragic result. In some countries, they use it in hotels for bedbug control. I cannot even imagine that because that never would be allowed here. It is used a lot in countries that have a heavy diet of rice, in order to keep pests out of the rice. If anything good comes of this tragedy, it would be that perhaps people become more aware of the dangers of using it.

She had not been feeling good the last time I saw her, but she said it wasn't serious. But I guess the winter made it more serious than she realized. The first indication that she wouldn't last much longer was night before last. She had all her family and friends there and was able to tell them all goodbye before she passed away.
When my mother passed away in 2003, she gave me some very good advice that meant very much to me.. She had lost her husband when Mark was a little boy. I know that being a single mother back then was rough but she managed to raise her family.
I have a card ready to take over to the house in Plant City,
It says something that is close to what I feel right now but I am not able to put it in words. She will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry for your loss! You and your friend are in my thoughts and prayers. My mom is 85, I don't get to see her very ofter, and cherish every minute with her!

Daylily, just a question, did Jewell happen to live in Clearwater, FL?

I know of a woman named Jewell and it's such an uncommon name to me. Wondering if it's the same person. She had 4 sons; one of them a Mark.

Jewell did not live in Clearwater. She lived in Plant City on Cason St with Mark and his friend Dwain Miller. She only had Mark and his sister.
As far as her name, Jewell was not uncommon to me, I have an Aunt named Jewell. She lives in Valdosta Ga. I think a long time ago women who were named Jewel, got that name because the parents may have thought their newborn baby girl was a jewel to the family.
