I just found my family tree going back to 1804.

I was playing around on the web and stumbled across this site that had my family tree. How cool is that. Love the first names, don't think I could pronounce some of them. BTW, my Dad's name was just Fred not Frederick. He always got a laugh out of mail that was addressed with that name. He said, plain Fred was good enough for him. You don't see that name much anymore.

barnmom - It is fun! Make sure you get a copy, if she will give it, of your family records so you can pass it along. There are always surprises as to exactly where your family came from and when.

I have been meaning to do it for years but never got around to it. I wish I had done it when I was younger and all the older generation was around to answer questions. I knew my grandfather was from Quebec but didn't realize it went back to 1804. I am just getting started, I am sure I will find lots more interesting things.

Here is one of the names I couldn't pronounce. Any guesses on how to pronounce that first name?

How exciting. You probably have some Civil War links in the family,too. Start digging through those old trunks in the attic.

My DD and SIL began tracing his family after we got a subscription to Ancestry.com (not an ad for the service at all). My American roots only go back to the early 1900's, but his go back to the founding of the country. One forefather came over in 1639, and settled in New Sweden, now the Swedesboro area of NJ/DE. Ancestors on both sides of his family predate the Revolutionary War. My grandchildren are now eligible to be in the DAR/SAR (not sure if that's good, but....). Now we are working on the international branches of the family trees.

Sue you made my mother crack up :) Yes, the canned food would be perfect behind the bed...we can haul it out every time I have to make soup for the little guy :oP Great idea you pest :oP PC I"m trying....LOL We'll see. lascatx...the question about squareness is an issue I'm concerned about. The granite and cabinet are both set level (I checked) and the granite does rest on the entire box so I don't currently see any gaping issues, but I do worry about the situation down below getting worse. I'm thinking that a fix much like Rm's is probably going to be our option, but if the cabinet isn't solid, that's just a bandage, and then, I do have another in the same situation, but it isn't showing wall board behind it yet. (Same tray shelves and pullouts) I will say, after this I really wish that Woodmode would have been able to do our kitchen. They couldn't do all of the custom pieces I needed (mostly our bay window) so we went Omega. I regret it, which is sad to say given the price of these stupid cabinets. My mother has been complaining about the plastic supports since she arrived LOL I think I'm going to reorder metal ones from an after market source. I like the idea of more than a piece of plastic holding up my dishes. I personally think the system is flawed. In a smaller cabinet, perhaps it might work, but when you pull the shelf out, it is front heavy if it's loaded. The two cabinets we have like this are about 50% of our storage, so being without them for a period of time is really an incovenience. Well we'll see. I'm honestly at the end of my rope on this remodel.

DEFINITION: Lyme Disease is an infectious disease caused by a spirochete-form bacterium (Borrelia burgdorferi), and was first identified in the 70's in children in Lyme, Connecticut who exhibited arthritis-like symptoms. The primary means of transmission to humans in the east is the deer tick, AKA black-legged tick, (Ixodes scapularis) which harbors the bacterium in its gut. There are reports that Lyme Disease can also be transmitted by biting flies, although this is rare. OCCURRENCE: The most significant areas of infection are on the eastern seaboard, from Massachusetts to Maryland, with other hotspots in the Great Lakes area and in a few localities on the Pacific coast. However, isolated cases have been reported in virtually all states, including Alaska and Hawaii. Anybody who works outside in these areas is at danger of infection. LIFE CYCLE: The life cycle of the bacterium involves deer, white-footed mice, ticks and humans (other animals can be involved, but these are the most relevant to us). The ticks apparently prefer to feed on deer and then drop off and lay their eggs in the spring in moist litter in the woods or overgrown grassy areas. The eggs hatch into larvae, which are not yet infected. The larvae attach to the mice, which may be infected, and become infected by the host mouse. When the larvae are finished feeding, they drop off the mice in late summer, and develop into nymphal ticks which retain the bacterium if the larvae were infected. The nymphs go dormant for the winter and then, in early spring start looking for a new host, which may be human. The major threat to humans is the nymph, which feeds and infects in late spring to summer, usually May to July. The nymph is tiny and hard to see when it's attached, so it may not be noticed. The nymph molts into an adult tick in the fall. The adult then goes looking for a big meal, typically a deer or a human and can also infect at this stage. However, the adult tick is easier to see because it's bigger (not huge, but detectable). When it's finished eating, it drops off, the female lays eggs, and the cycle is off again. SEASONAL ISSUES: The major danger of infection is in late spring and summer when the tiny nymph is feeding on people, but you still need to be vigilant in the fall when the adult tick is around. There are also some interesting annual/biennial connections between oak trees, acorns, ticks, mice and gypsy moths. Ticks in the east are commonly found in deciduous, oak forests. Studies indicate that oaks have a 2 to 5 year cycle where one year a large number of acorns are formed, followed by leaner years. The deer and the mice thrive when they've got lots of acorns to eat, and the ticks are happy because there are lots of hosts (deer and mice). What it all means is that the frequency of Lyme Disease infections seems to be higher a year or two after there are lots of acorns (gypsy moths are less frequent because mice eat the moth pupae (great choice, Lyme Disease or gypsy moths). SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE: When a tick bites you, it buries its head in your skin and begins to feed on your blood. The bacterium usually isn't transmitted to you until at least a day, and often 2 to 4 days later. Usually about 7 to 14 days after the bite of an infected tick, a large, circular, red "bulls-eye" rash occurs, often accompanied by headache, fever, fatigue, and muscle and joint aches. Severe itching is uncommon but can be present. The "bulls-eye" rash doesn't always occur, and you can still be infected and not show many of these symptoms. If the infection is untreated, the disease can progress to a generalized condition with neurological, muscular, arthritic, encephalitic and cardiac complications, joint swellings and cognitive problems, sleep disturbances and personality changes. The symptoms can recur over many years. It's rarely fatal, but can really mess up your life. DIAGNOSIS: Diagnosis depends on a combination of lab tests which detect antibodies to the bacteria (the "Lyme titer"), the history of a tick bite, characteristic symptoms of infection, the appearance of a rash, and the willingness of the doctors to take you seriously. Doctors are often reluctant to prescribe antibiotics without definitive lab results, and these tests will not be positive in the first few days or sometimes weeks or a month after the tick bite. The antibodies are slow to develop so a test will often be negative even though you're already miserable. It's important for you to document the symptoms (keeping a calendar is very good) and to keep nagging the doctors so that you can be treated early in the course of the disease. Keeping the tick (on sticky tape) may be useful both to identify the tick species and to indicate whether it's swollen enough to have been feeding for more than a day. If you feel the doctors aren't taking you seriously, and you live in an area where Lyme Disease is common, find another doctor who will consider treating you before the titer comes back positive. PERSONAL HISTORIES OF INFECTION: martieinct posted this account of her experiences with Lyme Disease in Connecticut: "I've held off posting because just thinking about how I felt the two times I definitively had Lyme makes me shudder. The two times were very different and that is why misdiagnosis occurs so often. When Lyme was first discovered, everyone was looking for ring rashes. My rash covered my entire torso and went into, rather than out of, the skin. It itched and hurt terribly, but no joint or muscle pain. It took a NYC dermatologist to get the final diagnosis AFTER two titers had come back negative. Three weeks of antibiotic cleared it up that time around. The second time, three years later, I felt like someone poured cement all over my body and made me run a marathon. The "rash" was confined to a 1" x 1" area and it took me several days to find it since it had no symptoms of its own. My general practitioner ran a titer "just to see" and it came back glaringly positive. This time around, the standard antibiotic course didn't work and I needed to get the IV treatment. What bothers me most about this disease, other than the fact that a lot of people ignore the very simple tasks one can take to avoid it, is the vastness of the symptoms. It seems that no one person's experience is the same as another. This makes it tough to diagnose right away. Thus, in my neck of the woods all the GP's do a Lyme titer automatically when anyone comes in with unexplained symptoms that have anything to do with a rash, achiness, long-term but low grade fever, etc. The titers still aren't 100% accurate all the time, but I give these folks credit for not messing around. The first time I had it, the three months it took to get me on antibiotics were torture. This is a "new" disease and is fickle. I'm glad that we're talking about it because the more who know, the less likely you'll get it or if you do, can get treatment right away. If you think you've been exposed, Don't Wait to get the Titer and Go to Another Doctor if they won't order you the titer immediately. There are support groups starting to pop up for folks who have had the disease and are getting recurrences. I've not gone, but it doesn't surprise me .... Martie" chelone who lives in southern Maine reports: "They did the Lyme titer on me when I caved in and saw a doctor after nearly one week of feeling so lousy I couldn't get off the couch. It came back NEGATIVE (and it cost nearly $300!); I was told I had "summer flu". Until I found the rash/ring on my left hip. THEN the doctor got serious, and within 18 hrs. of taking the antibiotic I felt normal. This disease is nothing to take lightly. It's insideous, presenting so many diverse symptoms that it's virtually impossible to "nail down" a diagnosis on that basis alone. We have a very high incidence of it in my community and the doctors at the local hospital are pretty "hip" to it now. Nearly every person I know on my road has had it at least once... it damn near killed a friend who is HIV positive (heart failure), and wrought havoc on a neighbor in his 70s. It's serious stuff, so be careful about ticks and meticulous in noting bites. Nag your doctor! you are your best advocate. Please note that the experience I referenced above happened in 1996! I remember because I was watching the Olympics and remember the "bombing". Awareness has increased markedly since then. I had one other "occurence"; in '04. I had a very nasty bite site on my left buttock. And the good doctor didn't hesitate to prescribe the antibiotic... mostly because I had my calender to quantify the bite date!" circa1825 who lives in south central MA reports: "I just wanted to warn people about deer flies being a vector for Lyme's Disease. Last year, a deer fly landed just below my ankle. I smacked it with my hand and was pretty happy that I'd gotten it before it bit me. At some point after that, the spot where it had landed started to swell up until I couldn't see my ankle, and the spot turned red, then purple, and then black. I thought maybe the deer fly had bitten me after all and I was allergic to it, just like I am to anything that stings. I started reading about deer flies and found out that people can get Tularemia from deer flies. Tularemia (deer fly fever) is a bacterial infection and is actually on the government's "watch list" for bioterrorism. Between that and the fact that I was already concerned that my foot might be rotting off, I went to the doctor. She took pictures of my foot, drew a circle directly on my foot around the area so I could monitor its spread, put me on anti-biotics (in case it was Tularemia and also because she saw that one of my ears was red inside), and sent me out to get tested for Lyme's Disease and bacteria. The test came back negative. Things got worse after a few days, so she put me on Prednisone. When things continued to get worse, she had me tested again. This time the test was positive for Lyme's and I got put back on anti-biotics. Apparently there is about a two-week window where Lyme's may or may not show up after a person has been bitten. I learned that getting Lyme's from a deer fly is much more rare than getting it from a tick, but something I saw on the Internet said that CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, WI, and MN account for 92% of cases of Lyme's. On top of that, Nantucket County, MA was the highest in 1999 with almost 1 in 100 people contracting the disease that year. I live in south central MA, so just beware." TIME CONSTRAINTS OF TREATMENT: Antibiotics such as doxycycline and amoxicillin are very effective in the early stages of the disease. As the disease progresses, these antibiotics can sometimes be provided on an outpatient basis. However, if you become extremely ill, or your physician recommends it, the later stages may require a lengthy stay in the hospital (a month or more) while they drip antibiotics intravenously into you. This is an excellent reason to keep after your doctors so you get treatment early enough to reverse the disease. Needless to say, a lengthy hospital stay will seriously impact your gardening time. PREVENTION - VACCINATION: There is a vaccine (Lymerix) against the Lyme Disease bacterium which has been used on people and animals. However, the manufacturer withdrew the vaccine from the market in 2002. According to a representative of the Lyme Disease Task Force in Connecticut "The vaccine was pulled off the market after a lawsuit was brought against the company manufacturing the drug. Those that were given the vaccine had reverse reaction which made them even sicker. They had previously been diagnosed with lyme disease and it was discovered that this group of people were at serious arthritic risk after receiving the vaccine" The manufacturer's position is "... GlaxoSmithKline announced the discontinuation of. LYMErix . in the USA as a result of poor demand for the product", (GSK 2002 Annual Report). The future of vaccination is uncertain, although another vaccine may be in preparation. PREVENTION - AVOID TICK HABITAT: The ideal solution would be to stay away from tick habitat completely; e.g., stay out of the woods, avoid moist, shady areas with lots of undergrowth or overgrown grassy areas and anywhere where there are a lot of deer and mice. However, even if you yourself are willing to give up a walk in the woods in spring and summer, and stay away from the shrubbier areas of your garden, you would still have to somehow control your kids, dogs and cats. Not an easy task. PREVENTION - REDUCE TICKS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: A more realistic approach is first of all to try to reduce the number of ticks in your vicinity and particularly the number of infected ticks. If your yard is surrounded by woods you could have your woods line sprayed with an appropriate insecticide/miticide. Your entire yard need not be sprayed, only the woods line (maybe 15 or so feet into the woods), if done properly this could reduce your overall tick population by as much as 70%. Ticks hide out in shady areas. They don't like sunny dry conditions, so you will find the largest tick population along the woods line, in tall grass, in thick ground covers (like pachysandra), etc., so with this in mind, don't put your child's swingset or sandbox near shady or groundcover cluttered conditions. Also keep your lawn properly mowed and don't plant pachysandra or other dense ground covers near or along frequently used walkways or around the foundation of your house. Have your pets treated accordingly with a product such as Frontline, and/or have them vaccinated if possible. Clearing leaf litter and removing brush piles is also recommended in severely infested areas, but this can conflict with the common gardening practices of mulching, developing compost, and supporting wildlife habitat. You have to strike a balance between the likelihood of infection and desirable gardening procedures. Chickens and Guinea fowl have been suggested as a good natural control to eat ticks. Wild turkeys may also be useful if they live in your area. If the Lyme Disease frequency is severe in your neighborhood, the community may be willing (or can be convinced) to adopt methods to control ticks on deer and mice. There are products that can be applied via deer feeding stations and provided to mice for nesting which will kill ticks. PREVENTION - CLOTHES, SHOES AND REPELLENTS: If you're going into tick-infested areas, you should minimize the amount of exposed skin. Under ideal conditions you should wear a hat, a long-sleeved shirt, and long pants tucked into socks and boots. Apply DEET to your skin and clothes, and permethrin to your clothes. Always follow the directions scrupulously for the health of yourself and your family. Light colored clothes are best so you can see the dark ticks and get rid of them before they attach to you. If you're not willing to bundle up in the middle of a hot summer, then concentrate on your ankles and legs since ticks are most likely to be found at that height. PREVENTION - INSPECT AND REMOVE TICKS: Of supreme importance is a daily inspection of yourself, your kids, and your pets to remove the ticks before they can do damage. In particular, check shady, moist areas, e.g. the scalp, groin, and armpits. There are other ticks around besides deer ticks. Deer ticks are smaller (a couple of millimeters, tops) but all ticks should obviously be removed ASAP. If you find an embedded tick, remove it with fine tweezers. Get a good grip on the body and pull out slowly. Forget about the hot matches, vaseline, nail polish removers, ammonia, whatever - you might end up with a mangled tick still pumping away into you. And damaged skin as well. Once you've got the tick out, clean the bite with alcohol and apply a topical antibiotic such as neosporin. Even if some of the mouth parts stayed in the skin, the bacterium was removed with the tick's body. Save the tick on sticky tape just in case you develop symptoms. *See below for additional information on Tick Removal. OTHER TICK-BORNE DISEASES THAT CAN COEXIST WITH LYME: In case you're not distressed enough by now, you should know that the same tick that gives you Lyme Disease can also give you Erlichiosis and/or several diseases caused by the Bartonella organism. A web search on Lyme Disease and/or CDC will start you on the way to a lot of information. ...................................................................................................................... *ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON TICK REMOVAL jesssam objects to the use of tweezers for removing ticks and states: "Very thorough article on ticks. But your advice to remove ticks with tweezers is not recommended because you will be squeezing the body and therefore using it like a tiny syringe to possibly inject pathogens into your body. Here are some links to sites with recommendations as well as tick removal tools which might be wise to have on hand if you live where ticks are a problem. I do and I do. " For some of the links, search the internet for Placerville Veterinary Clinic. The website has a section on Tick Removal (quoted below) and an excellent discussion of different tools. Keep in mind that they sell one type of tool, so the analysis may be biased. Source: Placerville Veterinary Clinic "Remove Ticks How to remove ticks: Being careful not to squash the tick, grasp it by the head with fine-tipped curved forceps and slowly pull straight out. How not to remove ticks: Don't remove the tick with your fingers.  In many areas of the country the tick is likely to be carrying Lyme disease or other pathogens that can harm humans.    Don't squash the tick.  The spirochete that causes Lyme disease hibernates in the tick's intestine, sometimes for years, waiting for a signal that a new host is available. This signal, an influx of fresh blood, triggers an enormous increase in the spirochete population. After filling the intestine, spirochetes move to the salivary glands and enter the their new host along with anticoagulants and anesthetics produced by the tick. Squashing the tick spreads spirochetes everywhere. Don't try to burn the tick or smother it with Vaseline etc..  Once that tick is firmly fastened in place, it takes time for the tick to detach itself and depart. No matter how badly the tick may wish to leave quickly, it simply can't. A burning cigarette may kill the tick but won't make it fall off. Ticks can live without air for a long time, so attempts to smother it allow disease transmission to continue for several hours. Anything that upsets or harms the tick without removing it can theoretically cause the tick to regurgitate its stomach contents back into the host, increasing the likelihood of disease transmission. Don't twist the tick out.  Ticks aren't threaded. Your best chance of removing the head is pulling straight out with steady traction. Twisting invariably leaves the head behind. Because people who twist ticks don't feel the head break off they think it has been removed."

Meant to tell you that I love Fairhope- such a charming little town. I would think that if the female isn't going in to lay anymore eggs or to incubate them, that they're not going to move forward at that location for right now. Are you sure she's not going in there? It could be that the Chickadees are hesitant to move forward wondering if the bluebirds are going to come back. If you know that the bluebirds aren't entering the box, my sense would be to remove the eggs & nest. If you don't have any continued activity or new activity, I would definitely get the box out of the tree & on that pole you purchased. I guess you could wait until your pole & baffle arrive- & if no changes, remove material & put the box on the pole with baffle at least 15 feet from tree, but close to it since it's a location they seem to like. I would put any houses that you have on a pole. You could actually move the baffle around according to where you have activity. The golf course side could be another desired location, since it sounds like it may be more open, which is what bluebirds seem to like. How awesome would that be if you had Chickadees in one location & bluebirds in another! As far as the snake repellant, maybe it is ok if it's herbal (& powder at that). I thought that what I sprayed last year should be harmless, but 2 of the fledgelings couldn't yet fly, so they were hopping around in my courtyard for 2-3 days until they died. They were so adorable! I actually took the last one to a rehabber when I realized that it seemed stressed & wasn't accepting food from the parents. As soon as we pulled up to the location, the baby died. It took me about a month to get over losing them. One died in the box, too. Again, wondered if was due to the spray that I used. My neighbor saw the one that flew out into my front yard a few days after it fledged & it seemed fine. Just not going to chance using that spray again during nesting season. You're right though- it's so hard to know exactly what to do because all we want to do is help them, not harm them. If you get a chance, would love to hear what happens. Dorothy, Thanks for sharing your precious memories too. I bet it was a shock to find yourselves somewhere that you couldn't grow okra! Summertime just isn't summertime without okra growing in the garden. Mary, How blessed we are to be able to look at our gardens and to somehow see in them some long-ago garden that meant so much to us. Jen, Well, all I can think of is that your old house was haunted by a non-gardener. Otherwise, I cannot imagine things not growing for you. Isn't it something how much we're influenced by plants once grown by people we love? We wrap up those precious memories and carry them inside our gardening souls, and when we get a chance, we pull them out and use our memories of those to turn a bare patch of ground, or a front porch with container plants, into a familiar planting area that tugs at our heartstrings. I confess that our home has family influences in the same way. Perhaps because my grandparents' homes were country homes when I was a child, I found myself recreating their country homes when we built our country home here. I had to have a screened porch because I always loved my grandmother's screened porch that she had at their country place when I was a very, very young child. I had to have a white picket fence, a round silver stock tank and a windmill for the same reason, though their windmill actually worked and mine is merely decorative. I had to have a barn, though theirs was a white sheep barn and ours is a red, barn-style garage. I had to have geraniums in our first years here, because she always grew geraniums there. I could go on and on, but it sort of astonishes me how well I remember certain things about that house because I think I was only about 5 or 6 years old when they moved away from the ranch to a little country town. I also didn't deliberately set out to make our country home have similar features to theirs, and yet, it happened. Do you know what I have to remind me of my grandfather's small town house where they lived after they sold the ranch? Grass burs. Common stickers. He was forever walking around the yard, yanking them out of the ground so they couldn't reseed. Now I do the same thing. That's not really a good thing, but it is what it is, and it is a family tradition of sorts that makes me chuckle. When we first moved here, we were so crazy about country living that we just had to sleep with the bedroom windows open so we could listen to all the night sounds. I especially loved to hear the mourning doves cooing early in the day as it reminded me of being at my grandparents' home and hearing the same cooing in the hours before sunrise. I even liked hearing the faraway sound of a train coming down the train tracks just like I would hear at night at their place. After the frogs started having regular conventions and croaking so loudly all night long that we couldn't sleep for all the racket, we gave up sleeping with the windows open. I still get to hear the mourning doves cooing early in the day when I first go outdoors. Strolls down memory lane are so much fun! Dawn

Most of my ancestors go back to Canada, then to Ireland and France so going to be a little harder to trace. Both my parents were the first to be born in the U.S. I have a friend that traced his back to 1600's. I am going to ask him for advice.

Clare, it is exciting! I remember the thrill when I was first starting, and found my great-grandmother's family in the 1880 census.

Remember that a lot of genealogy on the internet is wrong. On the LDS site you linked to, the IGI is actually from source documents, but the Ancestral File is whatever anybody wants to put there. It must always be verified. I have a cousin who regularly sends me stuff from the internet like people who died in 1740 fighting in the Revolution.

I bet you can go much farther back! Most French Canadians have ancestors among the original colonists (called habitants). My son-in-law is part French-Canadian, so when my granddaughter was born I looked into his ancestry; most had already been done, so I could research the historical background. I found she has an ancestor who was the first permanent European settler in North America. The early French settlers are very well documented. You will get back to the 1600's!

Clare, I love genealogy. It's been one of my favorite hobbies for over 20 years. I have published one book on my Mom's genealogy & am working on my second - Dad's. Dad's has been harder as I've had to make connections in Russia for assistance. I am so close to completion...it needs a bit more writing & editing...same place it's been for several years.

I'm also a contact for others searching for information from Dad's village in Russia. That's been a lot of fun helping others. I never know when I'll get an email or a phone call from somebody asking a question & then it might take me weeks to locate their answer. Very fun.

cloudy christine - Thanks for the information, any is appreciated. Where did you find all French Canadians ancestors information? And thanks for how to pronounce that name. I bet you won't see that on favorite baby names! LOL

Clare, I forget where you live, but if it's New England, you're in luck for French Canadian research in libraries.

Clare, FamilySearch.org is a decent place to start but be careful & always look for 2 confirming & independent sources. LDS does not require documentation & it is notorious for errors. I use it as "hints" rather than facts. There's info there about my immediate family that's wrong.

Same with ancestry.com. Be wary of those family trees. Thousands of people just copy something they found on another tree into their's without obtaining documentation & so errors get passed along from one tree to another. A basic genealogy guideline is aim for 3 independent sources for every piece of data. Another easy place to get tripped up...church records are often baptism/funeral dates & not birth/death dates. Check church records for marriage banns as well as marriages. Also remember the change from the Julian to Georgian calenders. England & its colonies adopted the change in 1752 but other countries are different.

Geneology is addictive.

I agree with tricia, those two sites offer a great way to start your search. And you can see and download copies of birth, marriage, immigration,census and draft records, through these sites, and it's really neat to see a document related to one of your parents or grandparents.

If you need to confirm, you can get source documents from local record offices. My DD and SIL have been doing that, through their public library as well as the LDS center. They have microfilm sent to them through library exchanges, and they order hard copies of records, from town halls, or vital record departments in small towns and counties all over. They've headed down a few dead limbs on the tree, but after almost a year of hard work, they have gotten a lot of good, reliable documentation. And it's been fun.

I got really hooked on ancestrycom a few months ago sort of as a lark to wile away winter and also because my dads gone, my mom is getting worse with alzheimers and there are few of their era left in the family and we all sort of lost touch since dads death in 94. I'm also doing one for my aunt who is not really a blood relative but her and my mom were brought up together since birth more or less like cousins in the same house, long story. Anyways it was never discussed that her mom back then in 1929 was never married to her father and she thought that she might possibly have a half-brother. I did some checking and found out she did in fact have a 1/2 brother and since the last name was not common I found a reference to it for some bakery over in the UK,, phoned them and it turned out to be her nephew she never knew she had.. he was also doing some family research but didn't know anything about his grandfather because his dad never spoke of him. This nephews sister who is now about 77 had heard talk that their father might have had a 1/2 sister but no one ever spoke of it either.. They'd never even seen a pic of their grandfather which my aunt had so I emailed it to them.. They were thrilled to find it out.

On my families side I got back in touch with some UK relatives I found on ancestrycom I hadn't seen since the 70's.. One is a 2nd cousin who after her dad died her sister waltzed in basically took everything, photo's etc. and they themselves haven't spoken in 25 years.. So I had lots of photos of her dad and grandparents, her and her sister as kids, aunts/uncles etc.. and emailed them all to her. She was so happy because she has a son who's 25 now but he was born just after her dad died and loved to hear stories about him but she never had any pictures to show him. So now she does.

It's very addictive.. I sometimes sit for hours upon hours,, like a video game sort of I suppose.. always trying to get rid of those little green leaf "hints" LOL

When my DD was born I did a quick family tree using old family bibles and just talking to my grandparents. I went back to the early 1800's easily on my side, both parents, and all the way back to the mid 1700' on my then DH's mothers side but was stopped on his father's side because his mother wouldn't talk about him just said he was a gangster and better left forgotten. LoL

My family is listed in the Blackburn Association database, my great great great grandmother, on my dad's side, was a Blackburn. The database goes back to 1675 when John Blackburn was born in Ireland. It traces his 105,000 descendants and has 425,000 linked names.

For some reason I seen to be the keeper of all the old family bibles although the oldest one we have is from my now DH's family and he has no interest in it at all. My dad has a couple of those really fancy framed family birth and death records, don't know what you call them, that must be 150 years old from his father's side of the family. I try to keep up with our family and now with our first great great arriving in May I hope my DD will keep it going on.

I have a box of old pictures of men in civil war uniforms from DH's side of the family with not one name, date or anything on them haven't a clue who they are or how they are connected to DH but neat pictures anyways.

cloudy_christine - I do come from New England. I would love to use this as an excuse to go back there and do some research. It has been 32 years since I have been back. Maybe I should do a road trip next summer. Thanks for the link.

triciae - Cool book. I will be happy if I can find names and dates. I did go to Ancestry.com and found that someone had already traced the family tree back to 1600. I will have to verify the information. Thanks for the tips.

momj47 - Thanks for the advice. I am barely starting. I know I have a lot of research ahead of me. Good thing I like to do that. I was a librarian.

pkguy - Yes I am hooked now. I would love to find lots of interesting stories. I should have done this years ago when my parents and other relatives were still alive. I guess my Mom passing away last Spring made me realize how fleeting time can be. I hope to do her side of the family some day too.

partst - Since I started this, it has been decided by my 4 siblings that I am the keeper of the family history now. One of my brothers is sending me all the photos that were in boxes at my Mom's home. I am suppose to sort them and make copies and send them to everyone. It will be fun to see the old pictures I have not seen in over 30 years. And a lot of work too. LOL Thanks for the link.

Clare, in Boston, the New England Genealogical Society, a fabulous place, has lots of French-Canadian sources. Members can access some things online; I don't know everything is available that way.
And in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, there's the American-French Genalogical Society. The web site is useful too.

I second CC's suggestion of the New England Genealogical Society...it's a national treasure, IMO! Don't forget about the National Archives. They answer email questions without charge & were the ones who located my paternal grandfather's port of entry. He had always told family and put on his citizenship application he entered through Ellis Island even providing a ship's name. He didn't. He came through Portland, Maine. I searched for years to no avail. The National Archives found him in less than a week & sent me a copy of the ship's passenger list (they did charge for the copy of the passenger list).

/tricia - Interesting how the truth is different from the stories we grew up. I was always told that my great grandfather came from France. It looks like my ancestors were in Quebec all the way back to 1600. Unless the information I have isn't correct. That is why I will have to do lots of checking.

Thanks everyone. One other question, what family tree forms do you use? I noticed there a lot of free ones you can download online. Wondered which ones work the best, especially if going all the way back several generation like to the 1600's. How do you print that out?

I use Reunion, which only runs on Macs. It has some drawbacks, and if I were starting now I might not use it, but it makes pretty nice charts. It's not really possible to print out a tree that goes back that far, unless you want to assemble it like a quilt. Ten generations back, you have 512 ancestors. (You probably won't find them all!)
You have four great-grandfathers; maybe one of them did come from France to Canada. But a lot of family stories are wrong.

Part of the fun doing this is finding out the skeletons in the closet and that some of the stuff you heard passed down is just plain malarkey or embellishments. LOL

What I do find really interesting though for example is that I can find the old UK census records for my relatives back into the mid 1800's listing all the family members, ages, etc, their street addresses back in Manchester UK and then go on Google Streetview and see that some of their houses/tenaments are still standing. And to think that in some cases there were up to 10 of them living in these tiny tiny narrow 2 bedroom little rowhouses and they had boarders as well.

My goes back to 1788, when my great-great-great grandparents were married in Prussia and had my GGGF in 1796. His wife's maiden name was Friderici and her relatives still live in Switzerland, and so I guess she was Italian Swiss originally but spoke German. They inherited lots of land, which makes the records fairly easy to research, but they sold the land in Europe before and after they immigrated to Texas. I have copies of letters describing the land transactions, which are written in German and with German handwriting, which is a bit difficult to read, even for Germans. They almost immigrated to South Africa instead of Texas, but chose Texas because there were already a lot of Germans there. They lived in Galveston and Houston before moving to central Texas, and they entered the country in Galveston, like others of my ancestors. Some ancestors entered via New Orleans and Charleston, SC, but none came through New York or the NE.

I use Family Tree Maker. It allows for writing and printing of a book. I don't know the full capabilities but my first book, "Family Ties" is 800+ pages & the genealogy goes back to the late 1200s (one direct male line). There are 1,872 individual people entered & I cut off with aunt/uncles & their spouses. I couldn't go any further & hold it to one volume due to publishing size restrictions. Dad's book, "Thunder On The Steppe" is now about 600 pages. So, the software is capable of holding a tremendous amount of data including photos. Family Tree Maker is also good at helping organize your sources & assisting with the bibliography (a lot of work).

Lots of family stories turned out to be inaccurate. My favorite was that we were related to Sir Francis Drake. Ah, yes...but, no. Yes, we are related to Francis Drake but the wrong one! (grin) There's an entire book that's been published about a famous 1930s scam in Iowa about a huckster who bilked folks from their life savings saying he would claim Sir Francis' fortune & they'd receive a share. I've spent years plowing through records of that scam. The dude died in Leavenworth.

cloudy_christine - 512 ancestors - that is a lot of names to write down! It does begin to add up the further back you go.

pkguy - I was going to look up the places in Quebec and France and see if I could find them on the map. I would love to go there someday in person.

Lars - What really surprised me was that my family was in Quebec since 1600 and I am French all the way back to the 1500's. I thought sure some other nationalities might have mixed in. But not until my parents in 1944 when some Irish got added to the mix.

triciae - I heard stories growing up that on my Mom's side that we were related to Buffalo Bill Cody. I doubt it, but won't know for sure till I do that side. Cody is an Irish name. Amazing that you could trace it as far back as 1200's. I will check out Family Tree Maker.

My father told me that his grandfather was a friend of Buffalo Bill's, but I can't see how, since he lived in Pennsylvania. But my Dad did actually know his grandfather, so maybe.....

I was telling my dad about this thread and ask him if there was anything I should know about the family that he wanted to share with me now that I was old enough, LoL I'm old, any skeletons or secrets. Maybe I shouldn't have ask because he told me some things that I would have never guessed about in a million years. So now I have to tell my DD that her gangster grandfather on her father's side is nothing compared to my side of the family! Well maybe when she's old enough. And yes it will take some changing on the family tree but he made me promise not to say a word as long as his older sister is still alive. I thought we were the all American hallmark family... Not

It is cool to find out your history. I too have skeltons in my family's closet (uncle Harry owned land that was where the red light district in He11's Half Acre was in Nashville, a few thousand years ago. He was a respected judge, so doubly bad!). Here's a piece of my ancestor's (born/died (1775-1849)) last will and testament:

"Third I give and bequeath to my daughter XO one good bed and furniture, one cow & calf this she never recd & my other children have; ...Not considering my daughter XX in a situation suitable to transail her own business I wish and direct that XX be appointed her Guardian and that he take charge of her & her estate..."

He was my mother's (Ann), mother's (Dot), mother's (Jennie, Harry's sister), mother's (Charlotte), father's (Presley), father (James). So is that five greats?! Sheesh. A long time ago. They settled in Nashville and married here in 1797. Nashville was considered to be founded in 1779. So my family has pretty much been here since the founding and never left. Makes it easy to find all of our records. Dad's side, same thing.

A couple of days ago I found that I could search my fatherÃ¯Â¿Â½s motherÃ¯Â¿Â½s family even further than I could his fatherÃ¯Â¿Â½s, and that took me back to South Carolina on the French side of the family. I could go even further back on the fatherÃ¯Â¿Â½s side if I wanted to contact my relatives in Switzerland, but I would have to write to them in German, as their English is not so good, for some reason. I might do that at some point; my German is very good, if not modern.

Anyway, the other night I had a dream that I was going to a family reunion at some large house in the country, and I hardly knew any of the relatives there. I had a suitcase and traveling gear with me, and I set the suitcase down in the dining room or kitchen. More and more cousins kept arriving, and some of them seemed like sketchy characters, whom I felt I might not be able to trust. The house kept getting bigger also, until it morphed into a warehouse that had lockers in one of the hallways. I put my suitcase in one of the lockers for safe keeping but left my traveling gear in the dining room, unsure of what I should do with it. I thought I should keep some of it with me but was convinced that it was okay in the dining room. I ventured out into other rooms in the warehouse (it had multiple levels), and eventually I discovered that I could no longer find the lockers where I had stored my suitcase. I began to become nervous at this point but told myself that it was just a dream and that I would find everything when I woke up. However, when I tried to find the dining room with the rest of my things, I began to panic and became very lost in the warehouse, having no idea of where I was or where anything was. At that point I decided that I HAD to wake up, but when I did wake up, my pulse was racing, and I felt almost like I was having a panic attack. I canÃ¯Â¿Â½t tell whether the anxiety was caused by my blood pressure medicine (which seemed to have the opposite effect) or whether it was from the virus I had that was coming back.

To calm myself back down, I started reading again. Right now I am reading anthropology books at night to help get to sleep and I am currently in the Upper Pleistocene Epoch, which is one of my favorite periods, but it might be causing me to think too much about my ancestors.

I found out yesterday that my health insurance will help pay for psychotherapy, and so I am thinking about looking for a therapist to see if I have issues that I need to resolve. They usually put me on more medication, but that might be okay. I think I have a chemical imbalance that makes me psycho sensitive to certain medications. It might also have something to do with what I eat.

I'm not sure how much more I want to find out about my ancestors at this point - I'm sort of afraid they might come back to haunt me. My famaily has been in Texas since it was an independent republic, but that was not so long ago.
