At noon today I had a large package from the mailman that had me wondering "what did I order and forget about?" I didn't know the return address....in Tuscon, Arizona? And someone's "sister" was listed too???? I was completely stymied! I don't even know anyone in Tuscon, Arizona!

Inside were several lovely skeins of hand spun yarn. I'm a weaver now too, in case I didn't mention that. This is a lot of yarn, folks! It's beautiful and some of the labels even include what breed of sheep the wool came from! So tonight, in better light and squinting a bit, I was able to make out whose sister sent me these lovely yarns...... "Evil Jessy's sister" - Mindy!

Yes, our sweetheart the "evil" one has struck again! If you didn't know, hand spun yarns are a luxury item and are prized by knitters, weavers, and fiber artists alike. So now when I warp my little loom and start on scarf #8, I will have some wonderful, soft, hand spun yarns to add to the scarf.

Thank you, dear Jessy! I'm going to have lots of fun in the coming months weaving first one scarf after the other. Do y'all think a wool scarf to wear in LA would just seem wrong? Ha!

Oh Teresa! What a lovely surprise! Our EJ certainly is a winner isn't she?

And I learned quite about about spinning and weaving last night. (Tool alert here, I know I know I have no life) I was watching the PA Farm Show on local cable access and they had a segment on "Sheep to Shawl". Since I had no idea what that was, of course I watched and it was awesome to see the wool go from the animal, hand carded, hand spun and woven into shawls. From an article on the show:

"Five teams of six people each had to make a shawl, start to finish, in a short two and a half hours. The test is to sheer a sheep, spin the wool, and weave it into a beautiful finished product. Each shawl has to be 22 inches wide and 78 inches long and was based on a theme chosen by the team."

Anyway, your post was very timely for me and I thoroughly enjoyed watching last night. Also, I would love to see photos of your work!

The nice thing about your dollar store scenario is 100% of your money goes directly to someone in need! I try to help too. Today I am going a bit out of my way to do the afternoon high school carpool so the afternoon driver doesn't have to do it. I have to be out this afternoon anyway (to pick up overnight clothes for my daughters friend) because I am helping another kids Mom by keeping her daughter overnight. The Mom is flying to NY to check her sister with stage 4 cancer out of the hospital and get her on a plane to fly home (Carribean). Hopefully the karma gods will hold off on the expected bad weather till I'm home!

One of our cashiers went to McDonalds for lunch yesterday. A street person came up to her and asked if she had spare change because he was hungry. She said, "I won't give you money, but I will buy you a hamburger." He thanked her, and she got off her seat and went to get him something to eat. When she returned to her table with the hamburger, he looked at her and said, "I'm sorry, I was so hungry!" He ate her meal! She still handed him the hamburger and came back to work. Hungry. She didn't have more money on her for food. Nice, huh?

There are a lot of kind people in the world. You usually only hear about the rude ones. I met many kind people when I broke my arm, someone always opening doors, getting things off the top shelf, etc. One man even ran to open a door for me and told to wait while he opened the inner door. An employee at Freddies paid for a sundae, said his mother did that for him when he broke his arm and he was passing it on.

I love RAKs! Out of the blue, unexpected, and so sweet. They put a smile on my face even when they're not for ME, but I was able to witness. I work at a thrift store and many of the customers are shopping while they wait for their turn at the food pantry next door. When I started, if someone was "short" a little bit I'd make up the difference. Over time, I learned I just cannot sustain doing that. Anyway, this past week, a lady who didn't speak much English was making a purchase and she was 55-cents short. She kept talking to her GF, who rolled her eyes and said it happened all the time as the first lady had trouble thinking in Dollars and Cents. Another food pantry customer heard the conversation, while the first lady was trying to figure what to put back and came up and paid the 55 cents. First lady was thrilled and thanked the stranger profusely. An hour or so later, first lady and her GF came back through and bought a little more. This time, the GF paid and she took all her leftover change and put it in our Donations jar. In my eyes, that was TWO people paying it forward!

She has been spinning alpaca, sheep, you name it as a hobby and now stress-reliever

Hey Alexa, I watch that PA channel too! The other night I watched some kind of horse cart racing at the farm show. There's a whole 'nother world out there in the middle of the state.

Hand-spun yarn...that's amazing. That's like getting a box full of the world's most decadent chocolate, only better!

Jessy's really a sweetheart, but we probbly shouldn't ruin her evil rep by telling anyone. LOL!

so....I want to know how does EJ get away with giving away her sister's yarn?
I used to buy hand spun and vegetable dyed yarns from a place in New Mexico called La liana yarns. But she had moth problems....and the last skein turned into little short pieces in a few months.
I didn't know then to put it into the freezer to kill any eggs.
I also make shawls, but I knit them.

That IS a lovely gift, and I know Teresa will put it to good use.

As for a scarf in LA, Ashley tells me that scarves are the latest fashion rage, EVERYBODY wears them, and indoors too! Well, everyone except me because I'm too hot and I'm out of step with today's fashions, LOL.

Teresa, could you do kind of a "loose" weave and just make a fashionable scarf instead of a warm one? Although I know it gets bitter cold in LA. Yeah, sure it does. (grin)

I asked once and nobody replied. How do you folks get everone's home address to send these random surcies'??? I would like to do that every now and again but nobody opened up about the way to get the address for forum members? I am not a weirdo...(no more than LindaC anyway) so not sure what the process is. I do know Wizards' address (Nancy) because she boarded her doggie Roxie here last summer, but that is it. Does it take a secret handshake or what???
