My oldest granddaughter just won...

her elementary school's Spelling Bee! She goes to District on February 6. Go ALICE...!! Please wish her luck and keep her in your thoughts on February 6. Alice is twelve and grandma's excited for her and proud of her accomplishment.

Well, there are all sorts of claims out there about long-lived trees. And all sorts of criteria for deciding what form there trees might grow in. There are reports of creosote bushes in the American West living for more than 10,000 years with the bush slowly growing outward from an original bush and forming a ring. One plant? One root system? Well, I will leave all this alone, except to say that for me an old tree should grow from one continuously growing trunk, preferably one trunk that puts on a complete growth ring each year around the entire trunk. If you get my drift, you know which trees this would disqualify. Anyway, all that aside, I am fascinated that Norway spruce is a contender now. As some of you know I have been shamelessly promoting Norway spruce in these forums ever since I joined a couple of years ago. And one of the several misconceptions about NS that have been promulgated in some popular but ridiculously wrong-headed publications is that the tree is inconveniently short-lived. In fact, NS is at least moderately long-lived, with a "norm" under very good conditions of 400 years or so. But now? Wow! Very interesting! --Spruce

Great ideas, everyone! Pbrisjar, they wanted to have a BBQ at home too. Now they think it is at their daughter's house. She thinks they will freak out at the cost and they do not intend to tell them. She is letting them think that until a couple days before. They are not fancy, have buried both sets of parents and have more than they need. She's always trying to give stuff away (nieces, nephews, kids, etc.) She is my mother's daughter - "everything should be put to good use." They have a modest home in Mexico and modest home here. When they aren't in Mexico or here, they live on a boat in Canada. They would think flowers were a big waste of money. LOL! A cake may be nice because we all could enjoy but I'm hesitant to ask the restaurant to serve the cake. It's the kids' party and I don't want to seem like I'm taking over, YKWIM? If it was going to be at someone's house, I'd do a cake in a heartbeat. Great idea. As for this couple, they still drive the Toyota they bought (used) when the kids were young (it's immaculate). You could say they live life to the fullest, between their camper and boat, and two *very* modest homes. My sister cuts her hair every three months, so when she cuts it, she cuts it very, very short. :+" My sister thinks my house is fancy and it's always a work in progress. LOL!

Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts. We got thru the 17th, and then Father's Day. Brycesmommy, you've been so in my thoughts and prayers. Your burden is great, too, and this time of year is especially difficult for you also. The past 2 years, we seem to be especially vulnerable starting with Mother's Day, then Millie's birthday, the anniversary of their deaths and then Father's Day. I do appreciate your kind words and the friends who called us just to say they know how terrible that day was. Somehow or another, we seem to be able to get things together later in summer, and then we function OK until Dave's birthday in October, remembering the glorious day on which he was born, and reviewing his life and how much we loved him. As I may have mentioned, Dave was a fine, fine baseball player in high school and college; he played until his early thirties, and then work and family left him with no time for baseball. He loved the game, and so did all of us. Last year, on June 17th, we visited his high school and walked to the baseball field. It was completely empty, school being out for the summer. On the bench in the home dugout was a single baseball. I think he left it there for us. This year on the 17th, I was walking my only other grandchild (she's 2) home, and there in the midst of a baseball field, newly dragged and devoid of footprints was a baseball! I think (and pray) that he's telling us that he and Millie are fine, but how terribly we miss them. Bless you all who are carrying such terrible burdens. You're in my prayers.

You're welcome. :-) She looks ecstatic! Don't waste that pumpkin on Halloween though lol. Remove and clean the seeds. Season them with your favorite seasoning blend - even just some salt will do nicely - and lightly roast them. You can find many methods on the web. I like them raw myself. Then, have your granddaughter help you peel and chop that puppy up. Roast it for the savory base of a wonderfully creamy soup, or turn it into pie filling. You could stir fry it, or even chunk it into bite size pieces, add brown sugar, a few autumn spices, and cook it in a roasting pan to make a dessert like baked apples. A little ice cream on the side and yummmm! You could just half it, pour in some brown sugar and maple syrup and bake it like a squash. So many delicious choices!

By the way, Tricia, the mother of Callie and Saoirse was also a spelling bee winner. Seems almost like yesterday!

Wow, that's great. Good luck to DGD. I remember taking a test in the 8th grade to see if I would advance to a spelling bee. The word I had to spell was chamois. I had no idea what that was and I spelled it "shammy". Oh well -- be sure she practices that one.

What a great accomplishment! Every time I watch the Spelling Bee championships on television, I'm amazed at the knowledge base of these young kids. I hope Alice makes it on to the next round!

Thanks for all the well wishes...I'm sending her this thread. Alice is very competitive, enters about ever contest that comes her way. Skiing, 5k races, soccer, poetry readings, and now the spelling bee. She also plays both violin and piano. Last summer she started her own business doing henna tattoos even creating a website. Unfortunately, she ran into a bit of "legal" problems with her business due to her age (and not telling her parents about her new business!); but she's downsized her goals & is earning her own spending/savings money on a more local effort with friends. Alice has a lot of self-motivation. It's been fun watching her grow and develop. Math is her favorite subject and she's been teaching her youngest brother (1st grade) fractions. :) Downside? She gets bored easily and is off to the next challenge. She has the luxury of time on her side now to try lots of different things. I wish I would have had her adventureness at twelve.

Good luck to Alice. Ashley went to Districts 4 years in elementary and middle school, she went to the state competitions twice, it's very fun and I was amazed at how those kids could spell, and it is very competitive.

I hope she makes it into the next round.

Your granddaughter reminds me of my sister, who is 1-1/2 years older than I am. We were both very competitive in school, and she played the piano, and I played the violin, but your DGD does both! I very much appreciate anyone who is concerned with proper spelling - so many people do not appreciate that - until they try to do a Google search and wonder why they cannot find what they are looking for.

Self-motivation is something that I think cannot be taught, and so she is very fortunate to have been born with it. I used to enter almost all contests in school - with the exclusion of sports, although I was on the track team in Jr. High. I did not feel as comfortable competing in athletics as I did in more scholastic contests. It's nice that she has these opportunities available to her, and it's great that she could start her own henna tattoo business! Math was one of my favorite subjects in school also.

Does she like to sew? If so, you might want to consider giving her a sewing machine, if her parents do not own one. I was forbidden to use a sewing machine as a child/teenager, and I would have loved having my own.

That's wonderful! I am always amazed that anyone can spell from memory in that way. I know they work very hard.
