Some HAPPY news...

DD#2 delivered a healthy, bright-eyed, and already active boy on January 15 at 4:00 a.m.!! I've been waiting to make this post until the other thread had run its course. I can't wait any longer!

His name is Robert Dionisio after his dad's younger brother who passed away in a tragic accident as a teenager. Robert was born 8 days early and weighed 6 lbs. 2 oz. and 19". He's got TONS of long, straight jet black hair but a bald forehead. :)

Mom, Dad, and little Robert went home this morning to a waiting older sister, Sophia (now 2-1/4 y.o).

We had really hoped we could have had the house back together after Sandy to make the birth but between DD#2 delivering a week early and endless contractor/insurance delays that didn't happen. We have lots of pictures though and we'll try again for Houston in February.

Normally, I'd post a picture but I'm still unsure how all this FB, Pinterest thing works on GW now so no picture. :(

Anyway, now we have 7 grandchildren! Two girls and five boys.

Congratulations! I assume the birth happened in Houston - February is a nice month there usually, and I also like it in March. It sounds like you have a lot to be excited about, and I am also anxious to see baby pics!

A soil test is going to tell you that you have sand with no nutrients. Let's get some grass growing first. St Augustine loves a little shade. Bermuda, the other popular grass in FL, will not grow in any shade. For full sun the best one to get is the Floratam variety. There are a couple tricks to growing St Augustine. First is to mow it at the mower's highest setting. Let it get up to 5 or 6 inches tall before mowing it back down to 4. Second, it absolutely must have deep water every so often. When temps are 90 or above, you will have to water a full inch every 5-7 days in full sun. This time of year you might get away with watering every 3-4 weeks (always a full inch as measured by cat food or tuna cans). Forget about worms. They might come later or might not. The best thing to improve your sand is to use organic fertilizer. If you really have fine, white, sugar sand, then any amount of compost you can afford, up to 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet, would be helpful. My favorite organic fertilizer is alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow). Apply at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet as often as you want to or can afford. Grain type organic fertilizers take 3 full weeks to see any improvement. They are called "slow release" but that's sort of a misnomer. They release fast but not to the plants. The fertilizer feeds the soil microbes and they feed the plants. Being a biological process it takes time. Over time your white sand will appear almost black. Don't be fooled into thinking your sand is changing. What's happening is the microbes and grass are leaving behind organic matter that will help to hold moisture and provide other benefits to your soil. As for the snails, find some cheap ammonium sulfate fertilizer and scatter that around. Ammonium sulfate looks like rock salt and has exactly the same effect on snails and slugs. They bubble up and die. We had a big infestation back in the 90s. I used that stuff (before I became organic) and we haven't seen a snail since. Incredible!!

I just wanted all of us to try to shake off the gloom and doom of the past week and find one little beautiful thing to focus on to start our day.....not that we are not constantly thinking of the folks in Moore and Shawnee as well as other areas recently affected by severe weather, but just that we all know the sun comes up and the sun goes down and life goes on. I have had Joplin on my mind so much this week, with it being the anniversary of the Joplin tornado and with there being similarities between the EF-5s that hit both Joplin and Moore. I hope that people in Moore can look at Joplin as a reminder that after the heartache occurs and the cleanup is over, then the rebuilding begins. I am a master at ignoring tall grass and weeds. I kind of ignore my flowers too while getting the veggies in, and this week I have been trying to make up for it by catching up on weeding and deadheading. Your garden sounds so beautiful this morning. I am loving the normal May weather. Here where I live, our forecast highs and forecast lows are exactly what they ought to be in May, which is great. Before all the storms hit, we were having 2 or 3 days a week in the mid-90s, and it is just too early for that. Of course, those temperatures made some cool-season veggies start bolting, and there is nothing I can do about that, but now that it is cooler, at least the weather is more pleasant as I remove them and then plant hot-season melons and southern peas in the newly available space in the veggie garden. With the way the cold weather held on so long, I keep wondering how it can be almost Memorial Day already when we just had our last frost 3 weeks ago. Let's see, Islets of Langerhans, aren't those off the coast of Norway . . . oh oh, the choices are pancreas, lungs, kidneys, testicles . . . My dream in life is to discover something and have it named after me! Steven Colbert just got a spider named after him, Aptostichus stephencolberti! I actually would prefer to have an apparatus names after me, like a Berlese funnel, or a Secchi disk. Or better yet, a unit of measure, like a joule or a watt or Avagadro's number.

New Years Day Cabbage

I've always heard that cabbage smells bad, and repeats on one, but never that you cook it for a day! Eww... I dearly love cabbage, chopped and stir fried with any number of flavorings/sauces to the point of being hot, but still a little crisp. I love it in soups, boiled dinner (I don't boil it quite to the mush my Mom did), slaws & salads, Asian pickles & sauerkraut. It is such a versatile and long-keeping vegetable. I've always at least one head (of several varieties) in my vegetable drawer because along with carrots and onions, as long as I've got some, we need never go without a fresh vegetable of some sort even if I've been spectacularly remiss about marketing. One thing that I learned to do at a Japanese restaurant where I worked is to shred cabbage into paper thin slices using a Mandoline (or some such gadget) and soak the slices in several changes of cold water before drying them thoroughly in a spinner to be dressed as a salad. Of course, one probably soaks out most of the vitamins in this fashion, but the thin cabbage slices get wonderfully crisp and make a really nice (and if you like, low fat) sub for cold slaw or green salad using your favorite vinaigrette or other dressing. You still get the fiber, anyway! :D

Tricia, that is wonderful news. I am very happy for you and your family. I am also glad he does not have hair on his forehead because if he did he would look like a caveman and we wouldn't want that! I'm sure he is just adorable. Seven grandchildren -- I am jealous.

That's good to hear, Tricia.

The happy news from here is that, by the miracle of sonogram (little fingers and stuff visible), DD learned today that her first child, due in June, will be a girl. This will even out my grandchildren at three girls and three boys. Not bad, eh?

This might be TMI, I'm not sure. It's interesting to me though so decided to share. If you feel faint at this type thing, I'm sorry.

Robert was an au caul baby. DD#2 has the caul. She delivered naturally with a midwife and I guess it gave the midwife a bit of a scare - it was her first caul birth.
