New driveway gate - BIG project!

We put up a steel panel corral gate as a temporary gate when we put deer fence up around our property. That was 8 1/2 years ago! Where does the time go? Finally DH did it on his 2 week end of year shutdown (every year Silicon valley companies do that.)with me assisting. It got a little scary when we were moving the gate from the workshop down the sloping 400 ft. driveway on small furniture dollies. Now the entrance to our property does look a little more classy.

I've got a long list this year myself, although it is shorter than year's past. I hope to be able to sit and enjoy my handywork more often this year. - Decorate the outside of my garden shed with found objects and garden junk I have made over the winter. - Put in some walkways from the garden shed to two new gardens. - Create new bog-like garden. - Plant all the things I have ordered over the winter and in co-ops this spring (very long list). - Make two more walkways to the bird tree and to DH's woodshop. - Try my own Hypetufa projects (I'm taking a class later this month). - Finish glass totems I started this past weekend. - Finish glass insulator hose guides. - Divide a bunch of hostas (big job, not looking forward to it). - Work on more mosaics and garden junk as the mood strikes me.

If they sag anyway, TSC stores sell a wheel that you can attach on the moving end of gate to prevent catching on the ground. Perhaps you could spray it black, to be less noticable. I have the wheels on some large farm gates. Gates are hung well, but supporting the moving end, prevents drooping, any changes in gate itself from the weight pulling down. I HATE gates that drag in the dirt. Without support, you need a HUGE frame and post to support that weight. Look at the old fancy gates, REALLY heavy frames to hold up the scrollwork, monster posts to hang from. And some *#* person will come along, STAND ON the gate to look around, to add to the drag problems or create a new problem.

So the gate will be way back alongside the house, probably extending from the front corner of the house, right? That would allow people to pull into the driveway, without the dog greeting them with a hug. The dog will have the run of the backyard, not the front? So you won’t be putting a fence atop the stone wall (that wall is gorgeous, by the way). Just a word about the gate, especially if the dog is a jumper. One evening as I drove down my parents’ lane, I saw a deer stuck atop an iron fence. I worried that it was impaled on it and called emergency. While I tried to discern the street number without further freaking out the deer, the dispatcher told me that happened more often than people knew, with deer getting either wedged between the pikes or impaled on them. This deer, fortunately, had only gotten wedged and eventually worked its way free and on over the fence.

She now installed a camera looking straight into my “private” backyard. Police can’t do anything about it. They can’t tell her to point it down. Put a bird house on a pole right in front of the camera. You don't even need to make it a real birdhouse. JJust put one with no back close enough to box in the camera. As long as your birdhouse is on your property, it's legal. I'd make the birdhouse moveable, in case she moves the camera. You can make the birdhouse attractive, so it's a feature.

It's beautiful, I can't even imagine moving that down a sloped drive on small dollies. I'm sure you'll smile every time you drive through it.

Just gorgeous! What a great job. You property looks beautiful.

Some people around here put a "cattle grate" on the driveway. I guess cows hate walking on it and so do deer, so it keeps them out.

Wow, beautiful! Looks like beautiful property too. I could do a fence like that---but what a disappointment it would be once through the gate.

Thanks everyone! It was a bear to put in but glad we did it. Maybe improve the resale value. When I pull up to the driveway I think I have turned into the wrong one. LOL.

Actually what you are seeing to the right is the neighbor's chardonnay vineyard. It has been there for 35 years. We have 2.5 acres to the left which is mainly all trees.

Lovely!! But I didn't even think it was bad with the stock gate!
Do you snitch some of the neighbor's grapes? Wine grapes make awesome preserves....and are good as table grapes too if you don't mind the seeds.

Wow, that is a really beautiful gate! Certainly makes for a grand entrance to your lovely property!

(You live next to a chardonnay vineyard? I am envious! LOL)

dcarch, Annie - Watch out that killer guard dog will chew your ankle off - if you give her a day or two. LOL

Lindac - In the 25 years of living next door, I have never taken a single grape. Never even thought of it. I did plant my own grapes from cuttings they gave us. And they have given us free bottles of wine. Not bad.

Chase - Yes Elvira is gorgeous! LOL. That is DH and DS, I am always the one taking the picture which is ok with me.

Thanks again everyone for the compliments. They all go to DH who came up with the idea, design and installation. I was just the (unpaid) hired help.

The new gate is very beautiful - the previous gate looks like what my father uses for cattle pastures, but before that he had handmade barbed wire gates that were not easy to open at all!

Are you able to open the gate electronically when someone comes to visit? At first I thought the vineyard was yours and was going to ask whether you had a winery as well!

Lars - It opens electronically as did the old one. That comes in handy during the rainy season when I just push a button inside the car. There are outside buttons on each side of the gate for UPS, etc. I sure hope we get some rain this year. Up here in Santa Cruz it broke a 100 year record, first time that there was no rain in Dec.

Stunning, both the gate and the view,you lucky gal! (cute family too!)

And yes, it's dry down south too. Weird, weird weather! I predict higher water bills, like they needed a reason to raise them yet again!
