Win 8 - just wondering...

How everyone is liking it (or not)?

I bought a Win 8 laptop for hubby, he took one look at it and went back to work on his XP.

I took one look at it and put it in the closet. Its been there for 6 months now. Collecting dust and, I guess, tons of updates.

Trying to figure whether I have the energy or time to figure out how to use it.

Would appreciate comments on how folks are liking this new version.

I bought Windows 8 just before the $48 sale ended and installed it. Then I did as you have done, ignored it for a few months. But then I decided that was foolish and got to work with it and found once the initial resentment at the changes were overcome it was no problem at all.

When the main screen with the large icons is present moving the mouse to the corners is useful, also on that screen simply start to type the name of the needed program and a pop up appears where you can click your choice to open the program. Just 2 little aids that seemed to work for me.

Once you learn the new terminology, the difference between Start screen and Desktop, and determine where things are located it is fine. For me, it is actually fun facing the challenge of doing something new for a change as XP is obsolete, and Vista and W7 were so much alike.

Tip #1 is when you learn something has been renamed, discover something in a new location, or discover something altogether new write the information down. It is really frustrating to sit there and know you have seen it, but don't remember where.

Tip #2 is the Windows key toggles you back and forth between the Desktop and the Start screen. In W8.1 the white windows logo located down where the START button use to be on the Desktop screen will take you to the Start Screen

Tip #3 is go to the Desktop. Right click on a vacant area of the Taskbar. On the appearing window select Properties. Review the Navigation tab as there are additional viewing options available.

I use ITunes and there is an icon "view" in the upper right hand corner with grid, list and artist. I use list, I don't want all of the other junk on the page. I can open ITunes then click on a certain play list, then click and drag from it to another folder. You might try copy and paste. I do not know anything about sync. I do load my ipod though it.

Hi there, off-centre, We got yer back, kid! How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation. Gonna have to change that, though, I think. ole joyful

I'm glad to hear you got it all working. But don't shield the router with metal in any way - it will prevent the wireless from working. What you want to check is, that the wireless password is strong. I use ten characters - alphabetical upper & lower case, numbers, and punctuation. I put it on a small cheap flash drive so when friends come over they can use it to copy and paste, although it's still a bit of hassle for mobile phones as you can't plug in the flash drive. I would think about changing it to some completely new password that no one could know. Like, you didn't have some wild party where some interloper looked on the bottom of the router and copied down the password ? You can use more than ten characters if you like, but the wireless network would be the main entry point for some bad guy. They'd have to first have wireless access, and once that's achieved, know the administrative password to get into the router, to make changes. It's much harder for someone to get access via the **wired** network - they'd have to get in your house and plug in, so that's not of greatest concern. But a strong administrative router password is the defense there, and that way you can keep your husband from poking around and mucking things up as well (just teasing.) Make sure that the router's admin password is changed to something other than the default, because there are websites where you can look up the default login passwords for all routers. The login user ID is not so important. Myself, since I'm in a very urban area (San Francisco) and there are tons of techies and routers, I named my wireless network SSID "Typhoid" just to kind of scare off anyone. But of course it really is no real defense. Next, you should look around for the router setting that controls **visibility **from the outside world over the wired connection. It's usually a checkbox in the Advanced settings saying something like "WAN Blocking." Make sure that's enabled so people can't see your router when looking around. Also look for something that controls administration **from the outside** , named something like "Remote Management", and you want to make sure that's disabled. Finally, you might check if your router is updated to the latest firmware - the software in the router that runs the show. The latest version would have all the latest fixits and patches for any vulnerabilities. You need to check it on the router, then compare it to what's offered on the company's website for that router. If your version is way behind, you should read the manual carefully about how to update. Usually it seems scary, but is actually pretty easy to do. That's all i can think of at this time. I use the mail tile on the "start" page. I have it set up with my email account thru the service provider, ie. @cox.net. I can go to my email account thru the browser, just like the 2 gmail accounts I have. I guess that would mean the settings in Control Panel need to be set to use my provider account. Ok, that gives me a place to set my feet to find out what I need to do. I recall that I set both my hubby's email accounts up thru the tile on start menu, as I did my own. I guess that is the default I need to set. The provider. I'll have to go look it over again, thanks so much for your help. I'm still learning the Win8 and it's way different from Xp and Vista. Will post back when I find what I need to do. Let you nice folks trying to help me know what I did or found out. Thanks so much for your time and thoughtfulness.

Thanks for the tips. Its still buried in the closet. I just don't have the energy. Probably a days worth of updates and I remember I couldn't even find Control Panel.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the operating system. Was it a dumb move by MS? Any chance MS will come out with a new, easier design soon? Might just let it sit if something new is in the works.

There are a few different bandaids, including the new 8.1 update, that some find more suitable.

It is what it is. Unless you plan to change to Apple products (which have their own learning curve for a Windows user), it's gonna be a loong wait.

Development and progress will continue forward. W8 is fine. Just like anything else you have to spend some time with it and learn.
