Windows 8 Questions

I already asked these questions eons ago but I stopped using my Windows 8 PC with touch because it was too different and hard to use. I am stuck today at home due to freezing weather so I thought I would turn the PC on and let it update software. But...

once I touch the IE Square and it starts IE, how do I turn IE off when I am done using it? I was going to just power off the PC (my previous way to turn off applications in W8). The IE Window does not have an 'X' in the upper right hand corner anymore and I can't remember what was I told.

I cannot find Windows Update. Where is it now and what is it called? In my XP SP3 Pro, there used to be a Safety Menu that contained Windows Update.

There is no obvious way to restart the computer. Some of the software updates have instructed me to restart the PC when done but I do not know how so I was going to power it off. The XP SP3 Pro way had a Start Bar, I would click at the top of the Start Bar and a pair of buttons would appear that said Log Off or Turn Off Computer.

Google turned this restart vid up. . 70 seconds. Worth watching. Read the comments to if you have time. Here is one I copied. >>i just unplug my computer and plug it back in, it is easier than restarting with windows 8==================
I think W-7 is called W-7 because it takes 7 clicks to do what one used to. Same for W-8, they just added another click.

One way to turn your open IE off.... is to touch top of the display and drag it down to the bottom of the display.

2nd way would be to touch left side of screen and drag slightly to right to open the history... and then touch and drag IE out and down to the bottom of the display.

One way to find Windows Updates would be to touch upper right side of screen and drag slightly to the left.. there you will open the Charms Bar and see the search icon. Search Updates and you'll see windows updates in the list.

Do you 'need' the Yahoo toolbar? You can set Yahoo as your search engine by choosing Tools, Manage Add Ons and then click on Search Providers. Choose Yahoo, Click on Toolbars and Extensions and disable Yahoo Toolbar (right click, disable). Restart IE. The problem with toolbars is that their behavior is unpredictable.

Hi DA, When I go to Tools>Add-ons I do not see Tools for Add-ons. So I went to the Adblock plus sign and there is nothing there that tells me anything about Manual or Automatic Updates. Another thing I just noticed is that I don't have the current update, do I have to go to the site and download it? Which site is the best? Oh yes I have the 0.9 version. I didn't know that because I didn't install Firefox the guys did when I had this computer built. Please send me the safest link to download the current version of Adblock Plus. Thank you.

donnas ... Virus program you might want to make sure the program itself is upgraded to latest version. And then keep the virus definitions updated daily.. should be ok for a while.. how long of a while would be strictly a wild guess. edit; Here is a list of anti-virus programs and their estimated end of life dates with xp .. at MajorGeeks site Personally if I had an XP computer, I don't think I would feel comfortable with online banking or bill paying or anything that might affect monies in the future. hald ... you can manually download and install 8.1-update1. Might save you from downloading it twice,,, once on each computer. See the link below. You need to make sure you have KB2919442 installed first.. before installing the about 700mb KB2919355, after that's installed run windows update again and it will offer about a 200mb custom version of the 355 to finish it off with all the other kb's built in it. How to transfer files from Windows XP to new Windows 8 computer

I'm now leaning more towards doing the transfers through external hard drive (gulp) - however, I'm confused on how to hook up the new computer with the old computer still hooked up. Would I just plug it in, and then connect it to our wireless home network? It seems the (old) monitor has only one hook-up spot which the old computer is plugged into. Should I wait for the new monitor to arrive (which is supposed to be about a month from now according to the estimated delivery date)? Or do I need the new computer hooked into a monitor just for transferring data? Now I'm thinking maybe I just need the new computer plugged into the monitor, and the XP computer not plugged in - lol - I'm confused. Maybe I should wait until everything arrives.

On the W8 Start page, right click on the IE charm. A utility bar will appear on the bottom of the page. Select Pin to Taskbar. An icon will be provided on the Desktop. Right clicking on the icon will provide several options including closing the window utilized by IE.

In W8.1 there is even an easier solution. On the Desktop bottom left there is a white Windows logo in place of the former START button. Right click on the logo and a menu appears including "Shut down or sign out". Clicking on it presents options including restart.

Thanks for all the suggestions. mxyplx, the comments were very good! Ha! I cannot figure out why "move" an action like restart into Settings either. Why make it any different that W7 is also stumping me.

Can someone tell me what is a charm? Never heard of it but mikie and damccoy mention it.

In W8 a charm is the individual box presentation on the Start page whether it be for an add-on or an application.
