craigslist scammers

Its been a gazillion years since I looked for a job - a couple weeks ago I sent my resume to a couple of job listings on craigslist that sounded good, one with name of company and one without. I haven't heard back from either, and in the meantime Ive since learned that many of the postings are fake. Pretty obvious - some of them are so semi-illiterate with bad grammar I thought who would want to work for such idiots. My email and street address, phone no. and employers were on there - do I have anything to worry about? What exactly would they do with resumes/emails they get? I wondered if they might try to get my ss number.

Also when trying to sell stuff - I get all these stupid posts asking "is this for sale" without mentioning the item asking me to reply via some other

And don't get me started on the no-shows. I done with craigslist. Just wanted to find out if I had anything to worry about re: my resume having gone out. I've changed my passwords to email accounts, anything else?

Perhaps having changed passwords you have done about as much as can be done. Others may have some suggestions for you.

My daughter when looking for work created a new online email account that she uses only for that purpose with no contacts in the address book. That way if it gets out of hand it can simply be abandoned and another account set up.

I never ever us my email address that came with my provider, I always use a throw away email account when dealing with people online.

There are plenty of legitimate companies that advertise on CL, although most of them are smaller in size. The one thing about CL is that a human actively needs to upload the original posting and keep it current. Sometimes I wonder if some of the ads on the mainstream job sites are actually from companies actively recruiting for an open position.

It does take to time on CL to wade through the companies seeking some version of a door-to-door salesperson. Marketing executive is one such job title. "Sports - background, minded, or education" seems to be related to selling cutlery (don't ask me what sports has to do with knives). While some companies do post their name others do not. I can understand that, especially for smaller companies, that don't have the staff to handle the inevitable phone inquires.

With that said, I'm not sure it would be inappropriate to write a paragraph or two describing your interest and qualifications and then saying something along the lines wanting to include your resume but be reluctant to send personal information blindly into cyberspace. I would think a reputable company would respect that. Maybe with so many people out of work, they just don't have time for a personal response.

If you want a laugh, try CL's "gigs" section. Beyond the numerous ads related to the adult entertainment industry there are an amazing number of people who think others should work for free (or darn close to it).

The only spam I've gotten from CL is when I try to sell something...

Who is selling this? An individual? A business? I was in the exact same situation as you not that long ago, I saw a new in box induction range on Craigslist for under a third the price new. The story was they bought it for a remodel which did not go as originally planned and they had no use for. I went for it and I'm very glad I did. But, I paid much less than $2500 so I had a lesser risk. What really sealed the deal was meeting these people in person and seeing how unlikely it was they were scammers. That, plus the fact that the range was in the original factory seal and box told me they had nothing to hide. Of course I was still running the risk that something might be wrong from the factory (unknown to the sellers) and I wouldn't be able to get it repaired under warranty, since it expired. That was a risk I was willing to take for that price. All these factors may not be present in your situation in which case I'd be really careful. Sorry but your Paypal idea will most likely not fly on Craigslist. Personally when I sell there I will only take cash, or if it's something big and the buyer insists, a CLEARED check. There are too many scammers out there and Paypal is too inconsiderate of sellers for most people to want to deal with them. Also I'm pretty sure they will only protect you if the item is shipped. People love to tell horror stories, Lily, but there are plenty of happy stories you probably haven't heard. Ten years ago my son was selling the occasional piece of ham radio equipment on eBay, and I asked him to list some of his father's chemical engineering books for me. He said no, he wanted me to learn to sell on eBay myself because i would love it. I was resistant, but he was right--all it took was one good sale for me to love it. Like most of us, I just had to get over the hump of that first listing. It seems intimidating, but eBay wants sellers and they make it easy. As for the horror stories, I have none to tell. When you set up a Paypal account they'll ask to access your bank account. It's a simple matter to open a new checking account (usually free) just for Paypal, keeping a low balance on the very slim chance it could get into the wrong hands. Mine never has more than $300 in it. As for Craigslist, it, too, is easy--plus it's free. Scammers love it but they are usually easy to spot. The Craigslist site issues warnings, spelling out what to look for. A scammer is unlikely describe what you're selling by name; instead, they'll mention your "item." A famous scam offers to pay by Cashier's check. You will quickly get a feel for the authentic email from a real buyer. You don't put your contact information in the ad, unless you want to. I never do. Buyers contact me via an anonymous email address, and I decide which ones I want to respond to. Except for the time I sold a piece of equipment too heavy to move, I meet all my buyers away from my home, at public places. Again, I have no horror stories to report. If you've bought at 40 years worth of auctions, I'll bet you have some stuff collectors would love. You could have a blast doing this, Lily. Oh and in case you're curious, these scammers make a TON of money! Just to give some additional information on John Boko. As I write, I have been in contact with "John" posing as a fellow scammer looking for work. John has just offered me a job as just one of several of his European representatives to help cash and transfer payments from scammed victims for him. I was offered between $2,000 and $3,000 per month just for the simple job of gathering victim's payments together and forwarding the money into his bank account. During our conversations I John told me he was making around $45,000 a month on average from his various scams, ranging from standard 419 type scams to cheque and Credit Card fraud. His team consists of around 20 individuals located in various countries around the world. I was also able to discover the name and contact details of John's artist and managed to contact him to confirm he had indeed been paid for his work, although he wouldn't tell me how much he was paid! I'm still in contact with John, who calls himself Tony, who incidentally just collected a $15,000 payment from one of his "guys" in Switzerland. Any information I can find will be handed over to the relevant authorities. I hope to update this page a little more soon.

When I read these I always can't believe that people are still falling for this.... however, just this weekend it took me multiple emails on a CL item before I realized it was a scammer - My DH and I were looking at something this weekend and thought it was local, went back and forth with a few emails and the poster would never give the details of when we could look at the item. She did have a good sob story of how her husband had passed and she needed quick cash. She finally said that the shipping was included in the sales price and we could pay thru Amazon, that was a red flag for me since I just lost a few bucks from a real amazon seller that went out of business so I looked it up and sure enough even paying thru amazon can be a scam now https://canadianfinanceblog.com/amazon-payments-car-scam/ The poster later that day sent me another email that had a link in it that she said was a link to better pictures of the item, there was absolutely NO WAY i was going to click on that link. The link can be used to get your login/password info from your computer.. another scam... https://www.yahoo.com/tech/scammers-are-using-google-drive-to-steal-your-125186285634.html. I did not open the link, I did respond just for fun that it just so happens that we have no problem picking up from 5 states away since we have family in that area and surprise,, no response since....
