I was ready to speculate that the problem might be the router, until you said that the roku and ipad work fine. Especially odd is that the signal drops with an Ethernet connection, that's rare. The processing of wired vs wireless connections use different parts of the hardware inside the PC. Having problems with one doesn't cause problems with the other.

Have you installed anything new recently? Do you have a robust security product active and updated? I'd do the standard of rebooting your router and modem (if separate), that sometimes can shake out problems.

I wonder if doing a rollback using Restore might help? I'm otherwise stumped, sorry, maybe someone else can help.

I am not very knowledgeable about routers, but sometimes my device says it is not connected and my network icon says it is. I just go back and click on connect again and it works other times I push the refresh button on the router.

Thanks. I am not sure I was clear about the Ethernet. Verizon said to connect the laptop to the router with an ethernet cable and then click Next on their pop up that is supposed to fix things. I did and the wifi connected. I unhooked the ethernet cable and all was well for awhile but then the same problem cropped up. It was fine all day today until about half an hour ago and it disconnected. Again, iPad and roku are fine.

I use the free Avast if that is what you mean by security. I have unplugged the router and rep lugged it, pushed the button the front of the router and restarted the laptop, although not in that order. All to no avail ugh.

Try with another laptop, have a friend bring one over or you should borrow one. If it works ok (as with your other two devices), my guess is that your PC is the problem.

How large is your home. Do the ipad and the borrowed PC work if put into the exact same physical spot where the laptop doesn't work?

What make and model is it and how old is it? Have you had other repairs or problems with it?

Verizon is your ISP? How do they do it? Is it farmed out to a telco and the telco's DSL, or through a Verizon 3G/4G cellular device? We returned such a thing to them after less than a week because it was seriously unreliable. If the Internet connection is via an associated wired telephone company's DSL, it's a whole 'nuther slew of possibilities.

Remember that a wireless connection is only a connection between the router and your computer. It can be fabulously strong and still not be connected to the Internet whatsoever. Thus the test suggester with a direct cable.

I had continual connection problems with my Internet connectivity until I contacted my provider and upgraded the speed. Had to get a new, faster router, but since then things have been much better.

I find it works better if I reset it periodically (which involves unplugging and replugging in).

I can see I will have to get some professional help. This is all above me! I do appreciate your help.

I recently got s notice from Verizon saying they are upgrading my speed, so maybe I need a new router. It sure is a nuisance and my iPad mini does not replace the laptop!

dedtired, I have W-7 and Verizon HotSpot for my wireless IP and had the same problem until I took my laptop to my tech and between the 2 of us we found out that Windows Defender was updating automatically and completing with Avant. Once I unchecked the update notification and made sure it was shut down in security settings the problem went away. So if you have your computer set to "automatically" update that could be your problem! Hope its something simple like that !!
