If they're still firm, then you should be able to start them into growth. Try potting them up or starting them in trays of compost and putting them somewhere warm (greenhouse or heated propagator).

I know the spines come out redish and sometime even greenish before they harden-off on E. grandicornis. They do look awfully large in diameter, but maybe they are just cuttings from a really big, well established plant? Anyway, who needs labels? They are wrong half the time to begin with, and it is much more fun this way!

70 whopping degrees here today. That's more like it versus snow on the ground. LOL I went out and looked the flowerbeds over to see what was peeking out and visited some family for a bit. DH seems to be settled into LA for the week and doing fine, for me - last night was absolutly awful but alas, the sun did come up this morning and I was still here so I guess it'll be ok-lol. The strangest thing is I've realized just how much of my time goes into him , it's actually proving quite boring here with him gone. *sigh* I wanted to work on a bit more Easter decor but my back is in a very bad mood from tossing/turning all night with little actual sleep. Nothing going to get done today. *boo* Come on Friday!

I've just discovered this thread and not a moment too soon (or late?). I can sooooo sympathsize. I'm also a stay at home mom former teacher debating the return to work. I have gotten totally jazzed reading all the great ideas and options. like you, I know htat my whole family would be miserable if I returned to work full-time. Right now I have a great set up subbing at my oldest dd's school. I have MIL babysit and when she can't I swap child care with a neighbor who works evenings. If you ever do feel the need to sub, find a nice girl's school with strict rules. My daughter's school is a dream to sub at. Small class sizes, the teachers always leave extensive plans and the girls actually respect the teachers (even subs). But as you said the pay sucks. It really only works out to be spending cash for me. So the ideas in the thread about future employment when my youngest starts school are real boosters. Good luck with that pet sitting. I am envious of your opportunity and the excitement that goes with something new and exciting - not to mention lucrative!
