My laptop, sleep is slightly less than 1-watt load total on the a/c adapter.
Sleep puts the configurations and all open items into RAM memory and keeps the memory powered just enough so it exists. When you power back on its there already in memory ready to go. Hibernate, writes everything to a file on the hard drive and uses no power at all. When you power back on the hard drive spins up to speed and it writes it into memory and within a few seconds its ready to go. Takes a few seconds longer than sleep as it has to write from hard drive. RAM is way faster storage. Hibernate can take a good chunk of hard drive space. |

| I love the sleep feature of Win 7. As I leave my computers on 24/7 I had got nervous about power consumption with my new computer and it's greater demand on power. No problem, press the on button and within 3 seconds my screens are up again. How sweet it is. The only down side is my Skype also 'sleeps' so I cannot be contacted but it is a minor irritant. |

| I'm equally confused with these settings. My mini, when on battery goes to sleep and requires a hard start to get it going. The screen appears as black screen, says Windows is resuming and a dotted line goes across the screen. When the computer is plugged in this doesn't happen. |
