Video file association problem

Posted by kudzu9 (My Page) on

I'm running a PC with Vista. I clicked on a file I wanted to watch at a web site, and a window appeared asking what I wanted to use to open it with, so I browsed to IrfanView which I have installed on my computer, and checked the box to do this all the time with this type of file. When it played, I got sound, but no video. The extension of the file is ".rm" which I guess Irfanview doesn't play. So when I click on the file now, it of course doesn't ask me what to open it with since I already told it to not ask again for this type of file. How do I undo this association so I can use the proper player?

RE: Video file association problem

You will need either RealPlayer or Real Alternative to play a .rm file. After you install the one of your choice, right-click the filename in Windows Explorer, select Properties, where it says "opens with" click the Change button, select the program you want to open the file with, click OK then Apply and that should do it. This is for XP, Vista is probably similar.

I would consider Real Alternative for the player
Real Alternative

for an all around great media player I really like VLC which is free and plays just darn near everything.
VLC media player Just make sure to get the appropriate windows version.
