WinCleaner ~ does it work?

Is WinCleaner ("as seen on TV") safe to use and does it work?
I know I have lots of junk running in the background and have no idea what's important and what's not. Any opinions?

I don't know anything about it but I just pulled up a url list and several of the wincleaner sites show a red wot warning.

"WinCleaner provides very little unique functionality that is, things that cannot be done without the program. Clearing Internet browser files, Windows temporary files, and so on can all be done manually with native Windows functions or utilities."

Good numbers. OK, the "thing" what "pops up" is known correctly as the Starter Drive Gear Assembly. Starter Drive will suffice. It is nearly universally accepted to refer to this component as the "Bendix". The "rubbing noise" you hear is the combined sounds of the starter armature "growling" because it is stalled, and the slow motion sounds of compression changes (which normally happen so fast you can't pick them out) in the cylinders. And remember....it did not go kaput "all of a sudden", it gradually became reluctant to start. It has only just now crossed the line from "reluctant to crank" to "I will not crank no matter how much profanity you heap on me". If the weather has turned cooler in your area over the past few weeks, that is likely why it SEEMS as if the problem "just occurred". Cooler temps will further reduce critical valve clearance to the point that the "compression release feature" of the engine cannot automatically lower combustion chamber pressures during the cranking phase of starting the engine. Get Walt's instructions, study them carefully, and decide if you want to adjust them yourself, or if you feel like "farming it out" to a shop. Good luck.

Being wrapped as well as it is will help, and if it's cryovac'd that's even better, but if you expect to store the meat for long period, and if your barn freezer still holds temperature reliably, it's worth digging it out. Because heat rises, the chest freezer will take in less warm air when you open it, and the more densely packed a freezer is, the more efficiently it runs and the better the frozen packages can keep each other cold. It's important to organize it well, however, rather than having it sit open while you dig through it looking for one last pork chop. Make a list of what you have and where it is, and make a note of everything you add and remove. It helps to tape it to the freezer with a pencil. The high end, newer upright freezers use a system I don't really understand well, with evaporators that remove the moisture from the air that gets in, preventing frost from forming, rather than running through defrost cycles like the old style automatic defrost freezers did. That will give you less freezer burn, but the manual defrost chest freezer is still the recommended appliance for long term meat storage.

My DH worked 2nd and 3rd shift for quite a while - he was a mail handler at the USPS. He started when my son was about 6 months old, my daughter was about 2. We lived in a neighborhood that wasn't so great. We had some nice neighbors who did look out for each other, but weren't quite the type you could count on. It's funny - I was never the type to get scared at night alone, anywhere, till I had kids. I grew up in the 'burbs. But I know what you mean about feeling "funny" alone at night. Do yourself a favor and invest in a security system. Seriously! Just the sign in the yard means a lot. In the country, response times may not be the greatest, but if someone tries to break in they'll get a loud alarm to scare them away and alert you. They're not expensive. Lots of alarm companies offer free installation with a year or two of monitoring, which is about $35/month. You also need to keep to a set schedule for your family, no matter what schedule your husband keeps. Get up, serve meals, and go to bed at the same time regardless of his schedule. Chances are you can have at least one meal together even so, and that'll become your family meal, even if it's breakfast when he's about to go to bed. Don't change your family's schedule to accomodate his. Make allowances so he won't feel cast out, but resist the impulse to "shift work" with him. Make sense?

It appears it gets decent reviews from most people, but I am generally cynical about programs like this. They are not a magic bullet that fixes everything that's not optimal. Some people using this program have reported it caused a computer crash, or that it deleted device drivers that then needed to be restored. If you try it, it likely won't cause more problems, and might improve some things, but don't expect to have your computer restored to running like it did on Day One. If you have a lot of stuff running in the background and don't know what to do about it, it's best to see if you have a friend who is savvier about computers and can help.

I haven't used it either, but after reading about its features from its website, you can do the same thing with the free CCleaner - a useful and effective program that is much more widely used.

If you look on WinCleaner's page on Amazon it says "14 years of research and development" yet there are only 23 reviews. And if you sort them by most helpful, 7 of the first 10 only get 1 or 2 stars.
Doesn't' look worth paying for to me.

These programs often create services, start up registry run keys, and tasks that run in the background... all of witch can slow things down..

Just a money grab focusing on the uninformed user.

And, I recommend you stay away from anything that places a focus on drivers. Dabbling with drivers causes more concerns than it remedies.
