streamlining the start up

Posted by pamies (My Page) on Fri, Nov 20, 09 at 14:21
I can't seem to find what I want by searching old posts- (since we lost some) I must not be using the proper terms.
I am almost positive that some kind soul posted a link to use to check out their start up programs and end those that are unnecessary. I have done this to mine, but want to help a friend with Vista and can't recall the link.
Can anyone point me in the proper direction? |

Here's another widely used. Just click on the green and yellow Task List on the middle of the page. Admittedly I turn to PP first. DA

Raven- I have a question about WinPatrol. Do I just download it and run it and let it make all the decisions for me? Or do I need to be an active participant and make selections as I use the program? I went to the homepage you linked above - and see that Winpatrol offers many great functions - I just don't know if it takes care of it all automatically - or if I need to also take some time to learn and decide what it should do. Thanks. Lynn.

I see you didn't dedicated your question to everyone so I won't answer that. I did want to share with you that WP will automatically configure itself in the startup. It is really not necessary to run behind the scenes as it works fine as an on-demand application. So disable it in startup. WP will regularly report itself as requesting to be allowed to become part of the startup; much like its detection of other applications. Don't allow it. I recommend never to "remove" an entry. DA

Well, DA - now I'm hesitant to address this to any one particular person. So if you or someone could help me and clarify how to use WP. How do I disable something at start-up? I don't quite understand how to determine what's at startup, what I need and how to disable at startup. That's why I thought this program might be appealing - so it could do it all for me without me understanding what it was doing. So what do I need to know/understand in order to use Winpatrol? Thanks. Lynn.

In the FAQs it is suggested, "Please try not to address your post to any one person. There are varying levels of experience on our forum and members enjoy contributing when they can...". Also, some members do not like stepping on other members when the thread is individually dedicated so they refrain from posting. Finally, a delay caused by the dedicated member's personal absence, illness, etc. would only cause unecessary delay for remediation of the concern. I like and have used WP for years. Once installed a user need only activate it by clicking on the Startup entry or Desktop icon (if configured as on-demand). An icon will appear in the System Tray/Notification Area. Clicking on that icon will present a window of various tabs. Select the Startup tab and review its entries. You will have the opportunity to delete or disable/remove any entry you wish. Again, I recommend only disabling/removing as by doing so the action is reversable. The entries themselves can be researched at the previously shared sites. Applications requesting addition to the Startup will be blocked by WP and a window will appear asking for permisssion or denial. You will have to evaluate and determine if you wish them access. The other utility offerings can be addressed in time after you are familiar with WP and your startup concerns are resolved. DA

I was at work when I published my last post, and working off recollection. I mis-defined items in one sentence. The sentence should read, "You will have the opportunity to disable or remove any entry you wish. Again, I recommend only disabling as by doing so the action is reversible." Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience. DA
