Can you suggest a good free photo software

I need a free software program that is compatible with Win 8. I'd like to be able to tweak the photos as well as store & share. Thanks

I don't know about the store and share, I store my photos on my external hard drive and on my PC. I like Irfanview to work with my photos and wallpaper. It is simple to use. It is free.

The free program I find I like best is Fast Stone. It has many image processing features and it's very easy to use.

I've tried many approaches (including Picasa) before settling on this. Many systems I found annoying or difficult to use - I put Irfanview in that category.

But's there's lots of choices, try several until you find what you like best.

Irfanview is a nice little popular freebie. Be sure to grab the plug ins too. It is not hard to master either. You know you can 'write' on the backs of your photos I suppose? If you right click on the file name or photo then click Properties. Click the 'Summary' tab and you can add your title and comments there. Try also clicking on the Advanced tab and you will be amazed at the data already stored there regarding the camera that took the shot. I added that in case you were only looking to write on them for identification needs. I wish people 50 to 100 years ago had written on the backs, it would have made things so much easier for genealogy Here is a link that might be useful: Irfanview

But there is a super free little windows power toy you can go get from the microsoft power toys site called Image Resizer This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click It is wonderful! you just right click on the picture and select resize and you get a box you can pick sizes from or set up a custom size. Free photo to DVD burn software?

I have no problem with the software, have actually found one, free but limited, only 36 pics. allowed, and it re-codes,formats,etc, and plays in our 2 DVD players, however would like one that allows more pics. and also don't know how long, I can use this one before they bug me to pay for full version.. so figured someone here knew of a total free one? this one also erases or formats and writes over a DVD-RW, has very kewl transitions too, seems ashame to burn 15 mins. on a 2 hr. DVD..wish they made shorter length DVD's??

I use Photoshop CS2 exclusively now, waited for years for it. I bought 2, one for myself and one for my gdaughter for $299 each from Adobe, WACOM had a promo w/my tablet and I used my Elements that came w/my cam to give to my gdaughter so she could keep upgrading. But starting with Elements is good. They may have more specials when you want the full power of Photoshop and where you can upgrade at the cheaper price. I started with Paint Shop Pro which is cheap, but Photoshop is what most of the pros use, the industry standard. I've read that Picasa isn't too bad, but somebody keeps sending me their photos from their website, and the quality is not too good, I don't know if it's because she doesn't know how to use the camera properly or Picasa resizes and compresses them too much.

I learned the basics of Irfanview in 2 hrs. - cropping, resizing, color adj. You can embed a title in a pic., change a .gif or .png to .jpg, change an image to grey tones, set up a slide show, blur/sharpen, and much more. And it's fast.

If I have to clone I reluctantly use Photoshop Elements. When I compared the results of a photo sharpened with Elements with one by Irfanview, I preferred the Irfan.

Photofiltre is also freeware. It's not reviewed at Gizmo's.

Iris I normally I use the product site if I can, but in this case it sends you to Cnet and I don't like to download from there. That is why I posted a different download site.

Be sure to download the plug-ins. Very easy as it is like any download and directs itself. Also, when configuring Irfanview during installation only select the graphic formats. No selection is permanent, but to select audio formats can cause confusion.

Picasa is another application worth tinkering with. I use it to print my photos as it's layout features can save a lot of photo paper. I also like the collage feature. Great for taking a bunch of pictures of the grand kids and creating a desktop.

I use http://www.getpaint.net/

It's like a light version of Adobe Photoshop, though I prefer Photoshop when available.

I suggest trying it and the other recommendations out and see which feels easiest for you.
