I use it to help people and have used it here. It's very good at removing browser hijackers like babylon and more. I always use it in the search mode first, then look at the log report it generates as it may detect false positives, after reviewing the log and making sure it's ok I will then run it in delete mode.

I would use caution using it, unless you're being helped as it does delete registry keys.

If you would like to run it here's how,

    Download AdwCleaner http://general-changelog-team.fr/fr/downloads/finish/20-outils-de-xplode/2-adwcleaner

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
***Note: Windows Vista and Windows 7 users:

Right click in the adwCleaner.exe and select "run as adminstrator"

    1 Click the Search button.

2 A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.

3 Please post the content of that logfile in your next reply.

4 Or you can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt.

If you would like lets see if it finds anything on your machine.

Ah. Okay. Thanks, Joe. My apologies. I didn't know it was already in use. I got the impression from the MUO article that it was fairly new, so I didn't bother doing a search for it here (or anywhere else) to see how long it's been out.

In any event, here's a log of my search results. (I changed the various usernames & profile names to "username" or "myname" for privacy's sake.)

I'll give you one more thing to try. You will need a good computer. You already have that because you're posting, the other item you need is a USB Flash drive, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ Download adwCleaner using the good computer onto a flash drive, from the link above, now take out the flash drive insert it back into the problem unit and run adwcleaner. Do not reinsert the flash drive back into the good computer.. until you reformat it after use.... adwCleaner is a very good browser clean up tool and will fix many things. Make sure you run the CLEAN option in adwCleaner, some people just run the scan and forget to run the clean option, the clean option of course removes the adware... Good luck...AdwCleaner could get you out of the woods! I'm trained in Malware removal, I'm not making this stuff up as I go, just to let you know... Thanks Joe :) This post was edited by zep516 on Mon, Aug 18, 14 at 21:34

Thank you so much, zep, for the McAfee removal information. My daughter was able to totally remove McAfee. Here is what she stated: This worked! Tell everyone at GardenWeb thanks for all the help I really appreciate it. I THINK I the other issue with the sound bits is also fixed. I'll turn it on a few times through the week to check it out. Posted by zep516 (My Page) on Sun, Sep 9, 12 at 23:59 Thanks owbist but I'd like to continue with the McAfee removal, Lets run this for McAfee removal, Download the MCPR tool from: See link below, when you click on the link a box will open on this page, click Save file, save it to your desktop, Then right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator". That should get rid of Left over McAfee files. Here is a link that might be useful: MCPR.exe Thanks to everyone else regarding removal of the sound bites issue.

You need to run 2 programs 1 AdwCleaner 2 Junkware removal tool Your browser is infected, both these tools can be downloaded from bleeping computer. These tools do not install to a folder, they run from the desktop. When your finished you delete them. Make sure you run the clean option in adwCleaner Then follow up with a malwarebytes scan. It is fairly new,

These are the type of entries I look for,

    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\Babylon
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\Conduit
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\Smartbar
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\LocalLow\AskToolbar
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\LocalLow\BabylonToolbar
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\LocalLow\Conduit
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\LocalLow\Funmoods
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\LocalLow\PriceGong
    Folder Deleted : C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Roaming\Babylon

I don't see any of that in your log so I would not run the delete option, especially when it can delete Firefox\Profile entries that you may want / need.

Well Firefox is crashing, and my video card driver is screwed up now. It was an old one, I went and got the newer driver, installed it, and have a rippling screen issue when I move opened folders around, and scroll my browser window. So I clicked to rollback driver, and got 'no driver files have been backed up for this device'.

I went and downloaded that older driver, installed it, but still have the same rippling effect. When I click on that driver in device Manager I get 'windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration info (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19)

FFox is crashing now also. I'm using IE now to type this, but it crashed awhile ago also.

There's nothing deleted there that would cause Firefox to crash, and certainly nothing to do with a Video Card driver issue.

What do you mean Firefox is crashing? What does it do?

I need the make an model of computer.

I need the operating system version,

I need the name of the video card as listed in device manger.

Well, it suddenly crashes, and sends an error report. I'm using IE now.

Win XP Home, SP III it's a Dell, Intel Pentium 4CPU 2410 GHz, 2.39 GHz, 1.5 Ram

VVidia GeForce FX 5200, version 6.14.11.7519
when I look in it's Properties, and click Resources, it says "this device isn't using resources because it has a problem"

I really appreciate your help with this Zep!

Do you know what the error report is? Does it have numbers or anything?

Running Firefox in Firefox Safe mode is the first thing to try, this runs Firefox without add ons, we would want to rule out a simple add on issue first. I have provided a link for instructions on that for you. Please run it this way and see if Firefox behaves itself, otherwise we will consider a reinstall of Firefox.

Lets work on Firefox first then the dreaded video issue :)

OK, I started FFox to try and get the error report. Went to a forum, clicked on New Posts, and FFox froze for abot a minute, Not responding. Got the error report

I clicked on Details but nothing came up.

opened Corel Paint, pasted the error report,. saved it and got another bsod. I forgot to tell you I've had about four bsod in the last week.

before we work on FFox, can we figure out what's causding the graphics problem (things 'ripple' when I move them, even scrolling sort of ripples). That might be what's causing these other problems?

    here's the BlueScreenViewer report

These bsod, I thought they were caused by a Avast! driver, so I uninstalled it and installed M Security Essentials. Here's the WhoCrashed report that made me think that

    computer name:
windows version: Windows XP Service Pack 3, 5.1, build: 2600
    windows dir: C:\windows
    CPU: GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz Intel586, level: 15

    RAM: 1609547776 total
    VM: 2147352576, free: 2048221184

On Fri 1/11/2013 4:24:08 PM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\windows\Minidump\Mini011113-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: aswrdr.sys (AswRdr+0x1E01)
    Bugcheck code: 0x1000000A (0x166, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFFFFF804E5443)
    Error: CUSTOM_ERROR
    file path: C:\windows\system32\drivers\aswrdr.sys
    product: avast! Antivirus
    company: AVAST Software
    description: avast! TDI Redirect Driver
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: aswrdr.sys (avast! TDI Redirect Driver, AVAST Software).

sorry, I'm pretty tired tonite, trying to be clear and precise because I really need to figure out this bsod and f fox issues.

I would not take the computer in for repair. All they will do is what you can do, return the computer to factory settings. Also the computer is getting on and the cost will possibly be equal to a half a new computer.

If you yourself return the computer to factory settings with your recovery disks you can save your personal data before doing so. The tech will likely not offer that service and all your data and email addresses will be gone.

Yes, I would do as Owbist suggests. Use your recovery disks (or recovery partition) to return to "out of the box" condition. First, you will need to back up and save any personal data and downloaded programs/apps. Then you will need to get all the MS updates and update all drivers, etc. Lots of work, but will save you money.
