How are user actions displayed by browser?

I notice, far too often, like now, that when I type into a dialogue box in my browser the text displayed in the box has a noticeable delay from the time I type. I also notice varying degrees of delay in moving the browser page up/down/around.

I assume that my inputs have to be recognized by the web site and then sent back to the user's computer to update the browser display.

If this is the case, then it isn't my computer or Windows with a problem, or maybe not even my ISP (DSL at 8 MB).

Welcome lesson 101 : ) I do recall in the "good old days" of low speed data and teletype devices that the typed information was reflected back and displayed on the teletype - in a way confirming it had been received.
