External Hard Drive

I finally took the plunge and got a Seagate External HD after I almost lost everything on my computer a few weeks ago. I eventually recovered the computer - it was some sort of memory failure. Anyway, it was enough of a scare to realize that I should really back up my computer (have never done it before!).

So, I connect the HD this morning, and backed up my files. I'm considering getting the software that makes a complete image of the hard drive, however - but is backing up the files enough? Also, I'd like to know if I can back up more than one computer on the same external hard drive - iow, can I back up my laptop and my desktop on the same one, or would it make things too difficult to keep track of? The HD is 1TB, and my laptop (Vista OS) is 4G/desktop (Windows XP OS) is 512MB with an extra 250MB added on recently.

Thanks, Dee
