'Nother AVG ???? - installing

Posted by jannaz (My Page) on Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 9:57
| In looking at AVG's website, the instructions for installing AVG 9 says to download the installation files, then reboot. Then proceed with the installation (if I'm reading it correctly).
I'm curioius why it wants you to reboot at that point.
Also, it's been some time since I've upgraded to a new version. Am I correct in assuming the newest will remove the older version as it installs?
Thanks,

These would be the instructions to follow for a trouble free uninstall and reinstall. Rebooting is sometimes required. Follow the directions.

I'm not sure what you are actually asking, but I am going to presume you chose to "run" the download rather than "save" it and install from the "save" file. If I am correct the requirement to reboot makes perfect sense. This action would be required just as if you were installing from the "save"d file or from a disk. The source file is of no concern. It is the requirement for configuration of the install. I never recommend an overwrite unless mandated by the manufacturer. Too many orphan files, obsolete code and .dlls, and chances of a conflict. A clean install of any application is the only way to go if you wish to be care free. DA

I recently upgraded to version 9.0 on my computer and also did my mother's computer with no problems. It will remove the previous version and install the new version. Check the following link and click on 2385. You will want to save the d/l to your hard drive. Do not click on run. Close any open windows before downloading and installing no need to close any software. When it asks to reboot do it then and not later. During the install you'll see where everything will become inactive but just let it do it's thing and everything will become active again. Bob

Hi, DA - no, I hadn't downloaded anything at the time I posted the question. I was reading up in advance. Zep, thank you for the link. Now I'm really not sure I want to keep AVG. If I have to download special tools and go searching for files to remove just to install a new version, I won't be continuing with AVG. What a pain! Thanx, guys. I appreciate the advice. J.

You're right AVG has become somewhat of a pain for a while now. I like Avast it's an easy install ect. I also like Microsoft Security Essentials too.

Removal tools as far as I know are pretty much standard now for all AVs, and I haven't found one that has removed everything. There's always a little flotsam left. DA

That's interesting--Shaboom's link says just install over the old version--and that's AVG's instructions. Wish they'd make up their minds.... a very confused J

As I previously reported, if the manufacturer says to overwrite then please do it. I personally wouldn't as I just don't like overwrites, but that's what they want. DA

Jannaz... you can install the new version any way wish to either by installing the removal tool or downloading and installing over your previous version. I should add that I'm running Vista and my mother's running XP. No problems with the install on either machine with the overwrite. My mother has dial-up so I d/l 9.0 and put it on a thumbdrive to install on her machine as 73mb would have taken forever to d/l. If you decide to d/l and install be sure to d/l the full 73mb and not the 853kb installation package. Bob
