Trying to burn CD..will not recognize that there IS a disc

using Windows Media Player, had burned 5 or 6 CD's about six months back. Now I am getting the message to insert Disc when I ALREADY have. I have tried two different kinds of discs (Memorex and Phillips..sucessfully burned on the Phillips ones before) I can play a DVD on it, but it will no longer recognize any CDs to play, OR to burn. What am I doing wrong? Thanksgiving gremlins have invaded my computer AND my printer this week...any suggestions, comments or help would be greatly appreciated.

Start - Control Panel - Open System Icon - Hardware Tab -
Device Manager.
Copy and paste form Windows XP Help and Support below.
(On your computer)

You can check the status of any hardware installation in Device Manager.

To check the status of your device

Open Device Manager.
Double-click the device category to display all devices in that category.
Right-click your device, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, read the Device status message.

If your device is not listed in Device Manager, it is not recognized by your computer. You need to install a new device driver manually.

To install a driver manually

Close any open programs.
Start the Add Hardware Wizard.
Click Next, and wait for Windows to search for Plug and Play hardware. Most newer hardware is Plug and Play, so you will rarely need to go beyond this step.
If no Plug and Play hardware is found, a list of hardware types appears. Click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list, and then click Next.
In the Common hardware types list, click the appropriate hardware category, and then click Next.
In the Manufacturers list, click the manufacturer of your hardware, and then in the Models list, click the model name.

Or, click Have Disk if you have an updated or third-party driver to install for your hardware.
Click Next, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Note

To open the Add Hardware Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Printers and Other Hardware. Under See Also, click Add Hardware.

cboy:first of all thanks for your advice! I opened the device manager and the DVD/CD-rom drives. When I click on the properties for that it reads HL-DT-ST DVD + RW GWA and then some numbers. It says the device is working properly.
Is the DVD only being recognized? ...because I can play a DVD but not a CD or burn a CD. I am technologically challenged, but had been able to burn a CD previously....
what do I do now? Thanks for your patience and advice!!!

Hi, back again, having gotten sidetracked researching a new computer system. I bought a Maxtor external Drive but I am taking it back after reading many many posts suggesting they fail more often than others. I also am finding that even when you use an external drive, that most people recommend that you back up to DVD/CD as well. So I am wondering if you have to back up the external drive, then why have one at all? I didn't want to spend the money on small flash drives to 'store' my data on, because it would not be cheap in comparison to much more storage space on an external drive for the money. But I think I would like to use ONE flashdrive? memory stick? [Are they the same, btw?] just to transfer my data from the old computer to the new. They can be written over repeatedly, correct? After I am finished transferring, I would like to use the flash drive to put my most valuable docs and photos onto the flash drive and use it to store in a safety deposit box. Is that possible? I am thinking that once I get onto a new machine with a new DVD player that would also allow me to write to a DVD, that I could back up that way. Am I making sense? Any experiences that would suggest I should think of doing something else? Oh, btw, I do have a wireless home network and two laptops use the network. One is a Macbook and at the moment one is a PC. Is there anything I should know about formatting my data so it can be used by both Win/PC and Mac? Any storage media I can get that will allow me to use it on both? The laptop's all set up - and dd received it on Tuesday. For now we'll try open office. She does have a desktop pc with word if she needs it. And at school they use Mac's. So no matter what we use at home, it won't be quite the same as in school. abreeze - thanks for the link. It's beyond anything she or I will do now - but one or both of us might get more versed in powerpoint over time. That's a helpful comparison. I created recovery disks - but when I went to create a password reset disk, the laptop kept asking me to insert a disk. There was a disk in there. I even switched disks in case one was bad. But it was birthday day - so I figured I'd get to this later. Well - it came back and bit me in the butt. Birthday night had some trauma. After dinner, my mother fell backwards and hit her head on the sidewalk. I took her to the ER. My daughter was distraught - and the parent controls had logged her off at 9pm. Husband thought this was a reasonable exception - so he logged into the admin account for her. She immediately eliminated the time controls. No big deal, I thought - I'll reset them another time. Somehow she tricked my husband into entering the admin password again - told him she'd restarted the computer by accident. Well - that sneak had gotten him to enter the password in a field that allowed her to change it. She changed the passwords and locked us out of the laptop. So this is where that password reset disk would have been helpful - to override what she did and reset a new admin password. So this is partly a note to people about the important of creating a password reset disk (or set up on flash drive). I'd never even heard of this before. We're at the beach with my daughter and friend - it's instead of a birthday party. So we're not having the confrontation with this weekend. Monday - we tell her she has to hand back the reins for the admin account (or no laptop). The joys of parenting preteens. It took her less than 24 hours to violate most of the terms of the contract she signed. Sure wish I'd had that reset password disk. When I get admin control back, I'll be sure to create one somehow. (I assume at this point my only option is getting her to give me that new password she created.) Thanks. Lynn.

Hi. I hope it's okay if I jump in on this thread as I have a similar task ahead of me. My 11 yo daughter's computer has a 40GB hard drive - which was sufficient for her playing games and surfing on the computer. Now she's starting to store music in Itunes, some picturs, an Flip Video's, so she's now over 75% full on her hard drive. Her computer is slowing way down and I've run the ccleaner, defragged the drive, run spyware programs and gotten rid of spyware. Clearly need to free up space. I could either get her an external drive and put her music, pictures and videos there. Or I could replace her internal hard drive. Replacing the internal drive sounds wise bc. she'll she might have difficulty knowing where to go for her music, videos, etc if it's not on her C: drive. But I'm worried about getting the information from her current drive to the new one. On the other hand, her computer is Dell dimension 4500 - from 2002 (I just updated to 1.5 GB Ram). These specs: XP sp3 1.8 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 processor 40GB hard drive CD-RW, DVD-rom drive (I think that means it only writes cd's but will play dvd's) I think pretty soon this will be too outdated and slow to do much of what she needs. In a year or so, it might be time to get her a new computer - in which case having her files on the external hard drive would be great - no changes needed when getting a new computer. Or I may pass mine down to her then. If I go the route of changing the internal hard drive, BP suggested above: "get a bigger hard drive, create a disk image of your current drive on the external drive, create a boot CD, put the new drive in and restore from the backup." Sounds great but I am unsure how to do those steps. If I buy her an external drive - and try to create a disk image of her current drive, I have no idea how to do that - or how to create a boot CD, or how to restore from the back-up. (I do think I can figure out physically replacing the actual drive). She certainly needs more space. Given her computer specs - and soon to be growing need to store music and video, should I just get her a large (500GB?) external hard drive - or go through the work of changing her internal hard drive? I hope it's appropriate to post this here. Let me know if I should instead start my own thread. Thank you. Lynn. PS - On my own computer, I have an external hard drive that has a back-up of my C drive - and some video files. It's a 600 GB hard drive with 136GB free. If your cds will play in a regular household player, and the player does not say "mp3/cd-r/rw compatible" chances are your cds are formatted as regular cds not mp3 disks - does that sound right? Did you convert the files to be regular cd type files, or did you just burn the mp3 files to disk as is? Some car cd players won't play burned disks at all, most newer ones specify that they can; and what formats. I had a 99 VW Golf, and some played, some didn't but mostly it was ok but that was not so much by design. The disks you use make a difference, avoid heavy/dark dye/base layers, the more silver looking (like commercial cds) the better. Ipod or similar may have to be your workaround. The slightly reduced quality (mp3 is a lossy format) you get used to, and having the range of songs, random play and eliminating need to change cds probably make it worthwhile.

crafty...I have had the same problem in the past and sometimes still do. I have a Dell too with Windows Media player and the service pack 2 was installed as well. I seem to do ok, by just taking it out and pushing it in repeatedly until it recognizes it and also I seem to have to wait a few minutes to hear that the cd player is coming on, there is a whirring sound. Most of the time this works for me so I haven't tried to fix it better than that. Mine is also out of warranty so I try to let sleeping dogs lie. [g]

Prairiemoon2: I have tried repeatedly pushing it in and out and am about to try not so gently!!! grrrrrrrr....frustrating when you have burned them in the past and all of a sudden I can't !! mine is out of warranty too of course!!!

Go to a reliable store and get advice on weather to replace
your CD Drive or maybe to buy an Exterior CD-RW Drive.
Explain your problem to them.

iTunes causes this problem because it has programs that run in the background and intercept system notifications that a CD has been inserted. WIndows Media Player never gets notified that it was inserted as a result.

If you have iTunes, uninstall it. Also Windows 'critical' update KB929399 is known to cause issues burning CDs. Uninstall it if the problem persists.

well..have uninstalled iTunes, but the issue remains. How do I find the update KB929399 to uninstall and will the uninstallation cause another problem of some sort? Think I'd better highlight " External CD-RW Drive" on my Christmas list!
